Download or read book Snakes Curiosities & Wonders of Serpent Life written by Catherine C. Hopley and published by Cosimo Classics. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1882, Snakes: Curiosities & Wonders of Serpent Life, by naturalist and artist Catherine Hopley, is a fascinating examination of the snake, from anatomy and biology, to common myths, to individual species and habits, and even speculation on "the great sea serpents." In the late 19th century, snakes were considered mysterious, evil creatures, stained from the sin in the Garden of Eden. Hopley's careful study shed new light on creatures long-thought to be vicious and deadly. In a new introduction, cryptozoologist Loren Coleman comments, "The mystery of snakes and the passion many of us experience among the serpents may seem commonplace enough today, but when this masterpiece appeared over a hundred years ago, in 1882, it was a remarkable event. The result was an interesting and scientifically insightful book on the curiosities of serpent life. It mixed Hopley's keen sense for observations and facts with her wonderful illustrations." This new edition, a replica of the original 1882 edition and complete with original illustrations, is part of Cosimo Classic's Loren Coleman Presents series. LOREN COLEMAN is the author of numerous books on cryptozoology, including Bigfoot!: The True Story of Apes in America and Mothman and Other Curious Encounters. CATHERINE COOPER HOPLEY was an artist, author, and naturalist from the late 19th century. She has written such titles as British Reptiles and Batrachians (1888), Life in the South from the Commencement of the War (1863), Stonewall Jackson (1863), and Rambles and Adventures in the Wilds of the West(1872). She wrote several natural history books and became known for her realistic watercolor paintings, and her 1856 painting of the old stone church in the Cleveland Public Square is in the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio. LOREN COLEMAN is one of the world's lead crypozoologist. In 1960 he started his fieldwork and after years pursuing cryptozoological mysteries he began writing. He is the author of numerous books of cryptozoology, including Bigfoot!: The True Story of Apes in America and Mothman and Other Curious Encounters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Note that there is a companion website for this book and it can be seen at: http://secretsofthesnakecharmer.blogspot.com/ Humans and snakes have an intimate and ancient relationship that often revolves around either love or hate. Snakes can be seen as gods, spiritual messengers, symbols of fertility, and guardians of resources in virtually all cultures. But to those that fear them, snakes are seen as venomous creatures that cannot be trusted. In Secrets of the Snake Charmer, John Murphy, a research associate of the Division of Amphibians and Reptiles in the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, provides an in-depth, twenty-first century look at snakes utilizing the published research of other herpetologists as well as his own personal experiences and speculations. Murphy covers a wide range of topics such as the adaptability of snakes, the ways in which evolution has tinkered with snakes during the last 160 million years, and the impact snakes have on the ecological communities they live in. While sharing ideas about the origin of snakes, rattlesnake rattles, and spitting in cobras, Murphy presents an innovative portrayal of snakes that proves they co-evolve with their prey, predators, and parasites in order to fulfill a significant and novel role in the web of life.

Book excerpt: IN a celebrated lecture on "Snakes," given by Mr. Ruskin at the London Institution in March 1880, he introduced his subject with the three considerations: "What has been thought about them?" "What is truly known about them?"-extremely little, as he suggested;-and, "What is wisely asked about them, and what is desirable to know?" The three questions exactly agree with the object of my work, this chapter especially; and I will invite my readers to seek in their own minds the answer to the first question, which will also furnish a solution to the second, and, I trust, incite some interest in the third.
