Download or read book Challenging Glass 3 written by Freek Bos and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 1022 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two things everybody knows about glass: it is transparent, and it breaks! These are also the properties that constitute the challenge of glass as an architectural and structural material. This book presents papers from the third Challenging Glass Conference (CGC3), held at the Technical University (TU) Delft, the Netherlands, in June 2012. The conference brings together glass engineering, research and design specialists. Papers are grouped under seven topic headings: project and case studies; joints, fixings and adhesives; strength, stability and safety (a category which includes a quarter of all the papers presented at the conference); laminates and composite design; curved and bended glass; architectural design and lighting and finally, glass in facades. Glass remains one of the most exciting materials available to designers and architects today. This book will be of interest to all those involved in working with glass in an architectural and structural context.

Book Synopsis World of Glass by : Beatrix Zimmerman
Download or read book World of Glass written by Beatrix Zimmerman and published by Publifye AS. This book was released on 2024-10-04 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""World of Glass"" explores the fascinating journey of one of humanity's most transformative inventions: glass. From ancient obsidian tools to modern smartphone screens, this book illuminates how glass has shaped our world in ways we often overlook. The author weaves together the historical evolution of glass, its scientific properties, and its diverse applications in modern society, presenting a comprehensive understanding of how this versatile material has influenced human progress. The book traces glass's origins from naturally occurring volcanic glass to the first human-made glass in ancient Mesopotamia, providing context for the technological leaps in glass production and application over millennia. It delves into the basic concepts of glass formation and properties, historical development of glassmaking techniques, and explores contemporary and future applications in fields such as architecture, telecommunications, and renewable energy. One intriguing fact highlighted is the role of glass in enabling scientific discoveries, from microscopes to telescopes, that have revolutionized our understanding of the world. What sets ""World of Glass"" apart is its innovative approach to presenting technical information, using relatable analogies and real-world examples to make complex scientific concepts accessible to a broad audience. The book's interdisciplinary connections between materials science, chemistry, physics, and environmental science offer readers a holistic view of glass's impact on society, while maintaining scientific rigor. This engaging exploration invites readers to see the world through a new, transparent lens, revealing the often-overlooked influence of glass on our daily lives and future technologies.
Download or read book Glass Structures written by Jan Wurm and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2007-06-22 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flat glass opens up more possibilities for the planner than virtually any other material. Because of the technological complexity of using it, however, no specific structural forms have been developed for glass supporting frameworks as they have been for wood, concrete, and steel. This book is thus the first to present a coherent guide to the planning and design of glass supporting frameworks. The focus is on the pressure-resistant, flat supporting element as a basic building block for broad supporting structures. The spatial and constructive forms of multifunctional, self-supporting glass envelopes are vividly illustrated and systematically explained. The constructions presented exhibit new aesthetic qualities, based not on the dictum of "dematerialization” but on the poetry of gleaming and transparent planes. They ring in a new chapter in the history of glass architecture.
Book Synopsis Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation IX by : Jochen Fröhlich
Download or read book Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation IX written by Jochen Fröhlich and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reflects the state of the art of numerical simulation of transitional and turbulent flows and provides an active forum for discussion of recent developments in simulation techniques and understanding of flow physics. Following the tradition of earlier DLES workshops, these papers address numerous theoretical and physical aspects of transitional and turbulent flows. At an applied level it contributes to the solution of problems related to energy production, transportation, magneto-hydrodynamics and the environment. A special session is devoted to quality issues of LES. The ninth Workshop on 'Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation' (DLES-9) was held in Dresden, April 3-5, 2013, organized by the Institute of Fluid Mechanics at Technische Universität Dresden. This book is of interest to scientists and engineers, both at an early level in their career and at more senior levels.

Book Synopsis Tenth E.C. Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference by : A. Luque
Download or read book Tenth E.C. Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference written by A. Luque and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have great pleasure in presenting the Proceedings of the 10th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference held in Lisbon from 8 to 12 April 1991. These Proceedings contain all the scientific papers delivered at the Conference. The following is a short summary of the Conference activities. The Conference was opened by the Minister of Industry and Energy of Portugal, Eng. Luis Mira do Amaral. At the opening ceremony the Becquerel Prize, created by the Commission of the European Communities, was awarded to Professor Werner Bloss of the University of Stuttgart, and presented by Professor Philippe Bourdeau, Director at the Directorate-General for Science, Research and Development. The Becquerellecture delivered by Professor Bloss constituted the scientific opening to the conference. About 760 delegates from 53 countries presented around 350 contributions, 50 of them as plenary lectures; the contributions were selected among the many papers submitted, this time more strictly than ever before. Also a selected group of scientists were invited to deliver 15 review lectures, to provide an adequate context to the contributions to the Conference. A Symposium on Photovoltaics in Developing Countries, which was very well attended, took place as a parallel event. The Symposium provided an opportunity to hear not only experts of the industrialized countries, but also speakers from the countries where photovoltaics provides services of paramount value.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Polarimetric Remote Sensing by : John Robert Schott
Download or read book Fundamentals of Polarimetric Remote Sensing written by John Robert Schott and published by SPIE Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is for those who need an introduction to polarimetric signals to begin working in the field of polarimetric remote sensing, particularly where the contrast between manmade objects and natural backgrounds are the subjects of interest. The book takes a systems approach to the physical processes involved with formation, collection, and analysis of polarimetric remote sensing data in the visible through longwave infrared. (pBRDF) is then introduced as a way to characterize the reflective and emissive polarimetric behavior of materials. With Dr. Schott's text, you will gain an introduction to polarimetric remote sensing, an appreciation of its issues, and the tools to begin to work in the field.
