Book Synopsis The Book of Heaven by : Patricia Storace
Download or read book The Book of Heaven written by Patricia Storace and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the acclaimed Dinner with Persephone comes a radically original novel about four women who invite us to imagine the divine anew: what if “a woman’s point of view” were also God’s? Patricia Storace’s Eve begins by telling us her version of what happened in Eden, and by revealing that our familiar constellations conceal other heavens we have never allowed ourselves to see. Each of the four subsequent chapters is the story of one of these new zodiacs, featuring images central to women: a knife, a cauldron, a garden, a pair of embracing lovers. The four women whose stories they tell are Job’s daughter, the Queen of Sheba, a polytheistic cook, and a transformed Sarah, wife of Abraham. Storace brilliantly reimagines the worlds of these women, freeing them from the old tales in which they were trapped and putting them in the foreground of their stories and of the Old Testament itself.

Book excerpt: The working title of my novel was Metamorphosis, for transmutation was the vehicle by which I intended to explore the concept of identity. There is abundant research on the effects of nature and nurture and their repercussions on personality development. It is well documented that our genes dictate our traits and that our exposure to experiences in the world mould our attitudes, principles and morals which, in turn, enable the intellect to forge and govern our attitudes and behaviour. Our identities, the perceptions others have of them, and the perception we have of the perception others have of them, carry a huge burden. The weak often struggle with the paranoia of self-identity; the strong appear to glide through life unaffected but often paddle furiously in deep running waters. My thesis embraces a belief in universal self-doubt and the tenuous grasp we have on the nature and structure of our existence and on how we define ourselves, within this context. It explores, by means of control experiment, (transmutation), the reference points of our existence, both the unwarranted pride and abhorrence we recognise in ourselves and, above all, the enigma that is our identity.

It is a poignant story of how the author and other victims cope with catastrophe. All of us, at one time or another face daunting challenges in our lives, and it is how we meet them that determines our ability to be transformed by them. The Paradise Fire is remembered as a catastrophe that destroyed an entire town, but as survivors, we must not remember the fire as destroying us.
Book Synopsis Climate Travels by : Michael M. Gunter, Jr.
Download or read book Climate Travels written by Michael M. Gunter, Jr. and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2023 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Winner, 2023 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award in the category of Ecology and Environment, Foreword Reviews Many accounts of climate change depict disasters striking faraway places: melting ice caps, fearsome hurricanes, all-consuming fires. How can seeing the consequences of human impacts up close help us grasp how global warming affects us and our neighbors? This book is a travelogue that spotlights what a changing climate looks like on the local level—for wherever local happens to be. Michael M. Gunter, Jr. takes readers around the United States to bear witness to the many faces of the climate crisis. He argues that conscientious travel broadens understanding of climate change and makes its dangers concrete and immediate. Vivid vignettes explore the consequences for people and communities: sea level rise in Virginia, floods sweeping inland in Tennessee, Maine lobsters migrating away from American territorial waters, and imperiled ecosystems in national parks, from Alaskan permafrost to the Florida Keys. But Gunter finds inspiring initiatives to mitigate and adapt to these threats, including wind turbines in a tiny Texas town, green building construction in Kansas, and walkable urbanism in Portland, Oregon. These projects are already making a difference—and they underscore the importance of local action. Drawing on interviews with government officials, industry leaders, and alternative energy activists, Climate Travels emphasizes direct personal experience and the centrality of environmental justice. Showing how travel can help bring the reality of climate change home, it offers readers a hopeful message about how to take action on the local level themselves.
