Book Synopsis Primordial History, Print Capitalism, and Egyptology in Nineteenth-Century Cairo by : Adam Mestyan
Download or read book Primordial History, Print Capitalism, and Egyptology in Nineteenth-Century Cairo written by Adam Mestyan and published by IFAO. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How old is the world? This question was a central problem for Muslims, Christians, and Jews in the face of the new scientific discoveries in the nineteenth century. This book introduces the answer from a Muslim point of view, outside of official institutions. The extended introduction - a microhistory in the Middle East - explores the life and oeuvre of a forgotten Egyptian intellectual and poet, Mustafa Salama al-Naggari (d. 1870). Next, A. Mestyan provides the English translation and Arabic transcription of the surviving fragments of al-Naggari's manuscript, The Garden of Ismail's Praise. This is a universal history of Egypt, written while the Suez Canal was under construction to praise the governor Khedive Ismail (r. 1863-1879). The author advocates a unique solution to computing the period of primordial history, before the Deluge, in the age of steam and print. Al-Naggari's alternative Nahda voice is available for the first time in this edition.
Book Synopsis The Furious Pharisee by : Al Dublanko
Download or read book The Furious Pharisee written by Al Dublanko and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Replete with romance, political intrigue, and history, The Furious Pharisee follows the development of Saul from a young student of the Torah and the Jewish religion to a vehement opposer of the disciples of Jesus. Al Dublanko draws on historical fact while creating well developed personas of characters only hinted at in the biblical account of the early church in the book of Acts. Through vivid detail and compelling dialogue, he brings these characters and the events of the Apostolic Age to life for his readers. A year after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, His disciples are preaching the gospel and attracting the attention of the Jewish people, from the poor to the religious elite. A passionate defender of the Mosaic Law, the Pharisee Saul becomes increasingly incensed at the influence of these followers of “the Way,” and he is determined to remove their voice from the public square. When the disciple Stephen claims that Jesus is God, Saul gives his full approval to the violent execution of the peaceful man. At the end of the novel, as Saul makes his way to Damascus, he is confronted with a blinding light and a voice from heaven that shakes him to his core. Humbled by the very One he is persecuting, Saul’s life will be forever changed. Readers will anxiously await the next installment of this riveting historical fiction.

Book excerpt: Bestselling Authors Tackle Difficult Issues for Believers and Doubters When it comes to the big questions about heaven and hell--Are these real places? Will God really send people to hell? What will we actually do in heaven?--Bruce Bickel and Stan Jantz don't pretend to have all the answers. But they do know how to wrestle with uncertainty and doubt. They welcome questions, and in these pages they ask some of the most important ones you have about heaven and hell. Book excerpt: This haunting debut novel invites us to explore the boundaries between beliefs, desires, obsessions, and madness. Karen Salyer McElmurray's story is set in Mining Hollow, Kentucky, where we meet Ruth Blue Wallen; her husband, Earl; and their son, Andrew. Ruth longs to know God, the only escape she can find in a world that has shown her spiritual, emotional, and sensual defeat. Earl yearns for the music-making of his past, now lost as he makes a living as a coal miner. Andrew desires the affection of a boyhood friend, an expression of love considered sinful in rural Kentucky. And with the divinely inspired yet tormenting help of his mother, in a world of deeply and tragically conflicting desires, Andrew must choose to live or die--he must choose an uncertain love or nothing at all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Heaven's Delight" is a feelgood romantic comedy novel about getting a second chance at life and finding meaning and value in a tumultuous world. Beth Woodson is a thirtythree- year-old cynical, self-centred Londoner who God sends back to earth to make up for her past sins, which include infidelity, being a terrible manager to her staff and a dishonest friend. She has six days to help bring together four couples of different ages and backgrounds, to learn the real values of love, friendship and honour. When you're a cynical, non-committal, couldn't-care-less-aboutchildren, thirty-three year-old woman, how do you help others fall in love? Especially when you possess no angel power and have to be a normal human being again. And if that weren't enough, the devils have been observing Beth. They're furious that God took her to heaven when her selfdestructive madness belongs in hell, so they make it their mission to cause destruction on earth and get her back where she belongs. Matters are further complicated when she falls madly in love with Chris, but has to hide her true identity from him. If Beth succeeds in her goals, her sins will be forgiven and she can return to earth. But if she fails, she'll be condemned to an eternity in hell...
