Book excerpt: Excerpt from One: One Book of Rhymes, One Look Betimes, One Smile, One Frown the While, One Brown The perpetrator of this collection of rhymes and stories has spent many years of his life in the railroad service. He has found an inexpressible amount of pleasure and satisfaction in living and laboring among railroad men. Many of the things which have seemed to him amusing, he has put into rhyme or anecdote. No literary merit is claimed for the productions. The writer, however, feels that most of them will appeal especially to railroad men and their families. The undersigned claims the acquaintance and friendship of many railroad men of high and low degree in all parts of this beautiful continent and to each of them and to all others he extends his kindliest greeting. And did she so, why frowns would sit on her Like clouds at molten eve, sunned into grace, Made beautiful by what they bask in. Rog. Thou, Meanwhile, as faithful glass - forget not that As smile for smile, wilt give back frown for frown; Whence the black danger, that those doubling frowns, Breeding as cloud doth cloud in angry weather, Heaven's face besmirch with gusty grimness, Not to be rent but by a stormful breach And then, obsequious glass, instead of smiles, Hot lightning and the rough-mouthed thunder echoes. Alas! Too certain 'tis, as smile to smile, And frown to frown, love leads to matrimony. Tang. Now I suspect thee. Thou dost never flout At aught thyself hast not a. Part in. Come, Confess. Rog. Well, in what guise? Shall I protest A melancholy sickness at my heart, tang. All sicknesses that life is wasted with Are purged from hearts that are by love invigored. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Character Analysis by the Observational Method As the years passed everyone marveled at the in creasing beauty of the girl. No one could account for it. As she grew in loveliness of face she also grew in beauty of character. Then one day her father chanced to discover the secret when he found her gazing, as she thought, upon the face of her mother with an intense desire to grow more like her. The Value of Beauty. - Mirrors have come into general use in modern -times, but there are yet nu guessed possibilities in the mirror for the purposes of self-analysis and self-development. The world itself is a mirror, as Madeline Bridges has sung, in which we see re ected our own image. In a special sense every face into which we look re ects our own. Smiles are re ected with smiles; frowns with frowns. It is not only romantically but scientifically true that by suggestion we grow like that which we admire and love. Hawthorne has told us this in his tale of classic beauty, The Great Stone Face. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from the fifteenth century to the late eighteenth century was one of critical importance to British constitutionalism. Although the seeds were sown in earlier eras, it was at this point that the constitution was transformed to a system of representative parliamentary government. Changes at the practical level of the constitution were accompanied by a wealth of ideas on constitutions written from different - and often competing - perspectives. Hobbes and Locke, Harrington, Hume, and Bentham, Coke, the Levellers, and Blackstone were all engaged in the constitutional affairs of the day, and their writings influenced the direction and outcome of constitutional thought and development. They treated themes of a universal and timeless character and as such have established themselves of lasting interest and importance in the history of constitutional thought. Examining their works we can follow the shaping of contemporary ideas of constitutions, and the design of constitutional texts. At the same time major constitutional change and upheaval were taking place in America and France. This was an era of intense discussion, examination, and constitution-making. The new nation of the United States looked to authors such as Locke, Hume, Harrington, and Sydney for guidance in their search for a new republicanism, adding to the development of constitutional thought and practice. This collection includes chapters examining the influences of Madison, Hamilton, Jefferson, and Adams. In France the influence of Rousseau was apparent in the revolutionary constitution, and Sieyes was an active participant in its discussion and design. Montesquieu and de Maistre reflected on the nature of constitutions and constitutional government, and these French writers drew on, engaged with, and challenged the British and American writers. The essays in this volume reveal a previously unexplored dynamic relationship between the authors of the three nations, explaining the intimate connection between ruler and ruled.
