Book excerpt: The authors advocate attention to smart data strategy as an organizing element of enterprise performance optimization. They believe that “smart data” as a corporate priority could revolutionize government or commercial enterprise performance much like “six sigma” or “total quality” as organizing paradigms have done in the past. This revolution has not yet taken place because data historically resides in the province of the information resources organization. Solutions that render data smart are articulated in “technoid” terms versus the language of the board room. While books such as Adaptive Information by Pollock and Hodgson ably describe the current state of the art, their necessarily technical tone is not conducive to corporate or agency wide qualitative change.

Book excerpt: Data Science gets thrown around in the press like it'smagic. Major retailers are predicting everything from when theircustomers are pregnant to when they want a new pair of ChuckTaylors. It's a brave new world where seemingly meaningless datacan be transformed into valuable insight to drive smart businessdecisions. But how does one exactly do data science? Do you have to hireone of these priests of the dark arts, the "data scientist," toextract this gold from your data? Nope. Data science is little more than using straight-forward steps toprocess raw data into actionable insight. And in DataSmart, author and data scientist John Foreman will show you howthat's done within the familiar environment of aspreadsheet. Why a spreadsheet? It's comfortable! You get to look at the dataevery step of the way, building confidence as you learn the tricksof the trade. Plus, spreadsheets are a vendor-neutral place tolearn data science without the hype. But don't let the Excel sheets fool you. This is a book forthose serious about learning the analytic techniques, the math andthe magic, behind big data. Each chapter will cover a different technique in aspreadsheet so you can follow along: Mathematical optimization, including non-linear programming andgenetic algorithms Clustering via k-means, spherical k-means, and graphmodularity Data mining in graphs, such as outlier detection Supervised AI through logistic regression, ensemble models, andbag-of-words models Forecasting, seasonal adjustments, and prediction intervalsthrough monte carlo simulation Moving from spreadsheets into the R programming language You get your hands dirty as you work alongside John through eachtechnique. But never fear, the topics are readily applicable andthe author laces humor throughout. You'll even learnwhat a dead squirrel has to do with optimization modeling, whichyou no doubt are dying to know.

Today’s decision making can be reached via information (related to the data), knowledge (related to people and processes), and timing (the capacity to decide, act and react at the right time). The huge increase in volume of data traffic, and its format (unstructured data such as blogs, logs, and video) generated by the “digitalization” of our world modifies radically our relationship to the space (in motion) and time, dimension and by capillarity, the enterprise vision of performance monitoring and optimization.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Pforzheim University, language: English, abstract: Big data is getting larger, the pressure in the market to use the existing data is getting stronger and therefore also the number of companies that address the topic of data science increases. This dissertation focuses on identifying big or smart data science trends in marketing and sales within the consumer-packaged goods industry. The objective of this research is to address actual opportunities around data science for the selected focus area. The following research project analyzes those opportunities and identifies nine data science trends. Via in-depth interviews, the expert’s experiences and difficulties with data science are questioned, emotions that arise through the interaction with this science are recognized, and potentials for improvements are discussed. Subsequently, central meaningful quotations are analyzed with Mayring’s qualitative content analysis, reformulated into condensed codes, and summarized through eighteen overarching categories. The general findings of this analysis include the necessity of smart data insights within this low margin industry, the dependence on consultancy support due to knowledge gaps, expandable engagement in the B2B environment, the promotion of data-thinking and acting, the merge of sales and marketing for data science knowledge generations, and the extension of data science knowledge to maintain competitive advantage within the market for the long run. The improvement proposals consist mainly of automated data cleaning, intelligent algorithms, data handling knowledge development, data democracy, and knowledge combinations in form of project dependent focus teams to broaden data science applications within the industry.

No longer will personal data be shared or stored in the cloud as merely data, encrypted or otherwise; it will now be stored and shared as a constituent of the binary string specifying the entire SmartData agent. This agent proactively builds-in privacy, security and user preferences, right from the outset, not as an afterthought. SmartData: Privacy Meets Evolutionary Robotics includes the advances made in the technology of simulating virtual worlds, together with the ideas emerging from fields of evolutionary robotics and embodied cognition within a framework of dynamical systems as an approach toward this ultimate goal. The book brings together top researchers in the field and addresses current personal data privacy challenges in the online-world.

Book excerpt: Convert the promise of big data into real world results There is so much buzz around big data. We all need to know what it is and how it works - that much is obvious. But is a basic understanding of the theory enough to hold your own in strategy meetings? Probably. But what will set you apart from the rest is actually knowing how to USE big data to get solid, real-world business results - and putting that in place to improve performance. Big Data will give you a clear understanding, blueprint, and step-by-step approach to building your own big data strategy. This is a well-needed practical introduction to actually putting the topic into practice. Illustrated with numerous real-world examples from a cross section of companies and organisations, Big Data will take you through the five steps of the SMART model: Start with Strategy, Measure Metrics and Data, Apply Analytics, Report Results, Transform. Discusses how companies need to clearly define what it is they need to know Outlines how companies can collect relevant data and measure the metrics that will help them answer their most important business questions Addresses how the results of big data analytics can be visualised and communicated to ensure key decisions-makers understand them Includes many high-profile case studies from the author's work with some of the world's best known brands
