Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bold, innovative book promises to radically alter our understanding of the Atlantic slave trade, and the depths of its horrors. Stephanie E. Smallwood offers a penetrating look at the process of enslavement from its African origins through the Middle Passage and into the American slave market. Saltwater Slavery is animated by deep research and gives us a graphic experience of the slave trade from the vantage point of the slaves themselves. The result is both a remarkable transatlantic view of the culture of enslavement, and a painful, intimate vision of the bloody, daily business of the slave trade.

Book excerpt: ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, NPR, The Atlantic, Electric Lit, Thrillist, LitHub, Kirkus Reviews • A witty, intelligent novel of an American woman on the edge, by a brilliant new voice in fiction—“the glorious love child of Ottessa Moshfegh and Sally Rooney” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) “[A] jewel of a debut . . . abundantly satisfying.”—Jia Tolentino, The New Yorker As an adjunct professor of English in New York City with little hope of finding a permanent position, Dorothy feels “like a janitor in the temple who continued to sweep because she had nowhere else to be but who had lost her belief in the essential sanctity of the enterprise.” No one but her boyfriend knows that she’s just had a miscarriage—not her mother, her best friend, or her therapists (Dorothy has two of them). She wasn’t even sure she wanted to be a mother. So why does Dorothy feel like a failure? The Life of the Mind is a book about endings—of youth, of ambition, of possibility, but also of the meaning that an inquiring mind can find in the mess of daily experience. Mordant and remorselessly wise, this jewel of a debut cuts incisively into life as we live it, and how we think of it.

Tragically losing both of his parents while in his early teens, Sebastian’s fate was sealed, and a new path now lay before him. Through the destined guidance of a remarkable mentor, Sebastian learned the ways of military combat. It was quickly realized that Sebastian possessed the gifts necessary to become a soldier elite. The United States government honed his skills further and, in the process, crafted a supersoldier. Storm was called in when all others had failed. Channeling his turbulent childhood anger, Sebastian concentrated his focus toward those that wronged others, his vengeance swift and calculated, a virtual modern-day champion for those that couldn’t defend themselves. A new breed of terrorism enters the global arena just as Storm’s self-reflection of his own vulnerability is realized, but when he learns that the leader of this auspicious group has set his focus on Storm specifically, he has no other choice but to meet it head-on. The leader of this group, Tobias Teague, and Sebastian Storm have long been rival entities bred by the same training early in their careers with a bitter tragedy that defined their emergent animosity for each other. For over a decade, they have avoided each other, but now Teague has planned a horrific terrorist event that will warrant the fear of the world, giving him the respect he commands. The odd chance of meeting an intricate and unique woman puts Sebastian into a tailspin of emotions he has never experienced and forces him to reevaluate where his priorities lie and what his future may bring. Duty being paramount, Storm is Teague’s only obstacle, and he will stop at nothing to achieve his goal. Their bond strong, defined by hate, by history, and by their lethal decree.

Book excerpt: In December, 2005, Frank DeMarco began several months of regular altered-state "conversations" with a man named Joseph Smallwood, who had lived in 19th century America, had gone west to Oregon in the 1840s, had lived with the Indians in Minnesota, and had fought as a Union officer in the Civil War. At least, those are the facts of his. This book is a record of those conversations. As the author says: "Quite possibly this is a mixture of fact, distorted fact, and unconscious intervention, jumbled together. Yet Joseph Smallwood is there, and you will see for yourself that he has a lot to offer us. I started out simply thinking to talk to Joseph about his life. Before you know it there we were, hearing that our time has a huge task ahead of it and that what we are and what we do is important to the other side." "Chasing Smallwood" has four interlocking themes: How to communicate with the dead. The life of Joseph Smallwood, a particular 19th-century American who loved in the West and fought in the Civil WarHow and why the physical world is important to the non-physical worldThe challenge of our times that we are not yet facing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other figure, historical or political, features more prominently in recent Newfoundland history than Joey Smallwood. During his long career in Newfoundland politics, Smallwood used the literary, rhetorical, and theatrical skills honed in the first five decades of his life to create a distinct and celebrated persona. He told his own story in his lively autobiography, I Chose Canada, published in 1973 only a year after he left office. Talented, venturesome, and above all resilient, he was no ordinary Joe. Smallwood was born in Gambo, Bonavista Bay, but grew up in St John's. Leaving school at fifteen, he quickly established himself as a journalist and as a publicist for Sir William Coaker's Fishermen's Protective Union. In the early 1920s Smallwood sojourned twice in New York, where he planned a Newfoundland labour party. Ambition, however, led him to support the Liberal Party of Sir Richard Squires. Defeated as a candidate in the general election of June 1932, he next promoted producer and consumer cooperatives, but with mixed results. In 1937 he edited The Book of Newfoundland and thereafter enjoyed great success on the radio as "The Barrelman." The book culminates with Smallwood's adoption of the cause of Confederation and his swearing in on 1 April 1949 as premier of the new Province of Newfoundland. There are multiple J.R. Smallwoods, but the aspiring and ambitious figure presented in this biography stands apart. Melvin Baker and Peter Neary use the largely untapped sources of Smallwood's own papers and his extensive journalistic writing to add a documentary basis to what is known or conjectured about the first five decades of Smallwood's remarkable life, both public and private.

Book excerpt: It is remarkable that Judaism could develop given the domination by Rome in Palestine over the centuries. Smallwood traces Judaism's constantly shifting political, religious, and geographical boundaries under Roman rule from Pompey to Diocletian, that is, from the first century BCE through the third century CE. From a long-standing nationalistic tradition that was a tolerated sect under a pagan ruler, Judaism becomes, over time, a threat that needs to be repressed and confined against a now-Christian empire. This work examines the galvanizing forces that shaped and defined Judaism as we have come to know it. This publication has also been published in hardback, please click here for details.
