Book Synopsis Tragedy and Comedy from Dante to Pseudo-Dante by : H.A. Kelly
Download or read book Tragedy and Comedy from Dante to Pseudo-Dante written by H.A. Kelly and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-30 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Professor Kelly analyzes Dante's understanding of the meanings of tragedy and comedy in his undisputed works, especially the 'De vulgari eloquentia' and the 'Comedia'. He finds that Dante's criteria concerned subject-matter and style, not emotions like happiness and sorrow, or plot movement from one mood to another, or humor or the lack of it. He considered Vergil's 'Aeneid' and his own lyric poems to be tragedies because of their sublime subjects and their use of elevated style and vocabulary. He considered the 'Inferno', along with the 'Purgatorio' and the 'Paradiso', to be a comedy because of the range of subjects and styles. Dante's commentators, in contrast, tended to have a plot-based understanding of these genres, and they attributed similar views to Dante himself. On the basis of both content and style, Kelly concludes that the 'Epistle to Cangrande' is not by Dante, except possibly for the first three paragraphs, and therefore ascribes it to Pseudo-Dante. It was not compiled as we have it until the last quarter of the fourteenth century, but it incorporated an earlier anonymous 'accessus' to the 'Comedia'. This 'accessus' drew heavily on Guido da Pisa's commentary, and it in turn was used by Boccaccio.
Book Synopsis Tragedy in Small Town TN by : C. R. Tinsley
Download or read book Tragedy in Small Town TN written by C. R. Tinsley and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It happened so very quickly, yet, the memories of this event have lingered for decades. For those who were there, the event plays over-and-over in their mind, sometimes in slow-motion where they can still see each freeze-frame moment just as it occurred. For loved ones who were not there, their vision of what occurred plays over-and over, haunting their dreams both day and night. The date was Sunday, June 26, 1977. It was a hot 90 degrees and most of the residents of the small town of Columbia, TN were taking part in church functions, spending the day with family, hanging out at the pool, or taking a pleasant afternoon nap. Little did anyone know that our town was mere moments from an epic disaster. A disaster that would leave its weighty mark on every member of this community, for years to come. The worst jail fire in the history of Tennessee, both then and now.

Book Synopsis Reimagining Greek Tragedy on the American Stage by : Helene P. Foley
Download or read book Reimagining Greek Tragedy on the American Stage written by Helene P. Foley and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the emergence of Greek tragedy on the American stage from the nineteenth century to the present. Despite the gap separating the world of classical Greece from our own, Greek tragedy has provided a fertile source for some of the most innovative American theater. Helene P. Foley shows how plays like Oedipus Rex and Medea have resonated deeply with contemporary concerns and controversies—over war, slavery, race, the status of women, religion, identity, and immigration. Although Greek tragedy was often initially embraced for its melodramatic possibilities, by the twentieth century it became a vehicle not only for major developments in the history of American theater and dance, but also for exploring critical tensions in American cultural and political life. Drawing on a wide range of sources—archival, video, interviews, and reviews—Reimagining Greek Tragedy on the American Stage provides the most comprehensive treatment of the subject available.

Book Synopsis The Politics and Poetics of Contemporary English Tragedy by : Sean Carney
Download or read book The Politics and Poetics of Contemporary English Tragedy written by Sean Carney and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics and Poetics of Contemporary English Tragedy is a detailed study of the idea of the tragic in the political plays of David Hare, Howard Barker, Edward Bond, Caryl Churchill, Mark Ravenhill, Sarah Kane, and Jez Butterworth. Through an in-depth analysis of over sixty of their works, Sean Carney argues that their dramatic exploration of tragic experience is an integral part of their ongoing politics. This approach allows for a comprehensive rather than selective study of both the politics and poetics of their work. Carney's attention to the tragic enables him to find a common discourse among the canonical English playwrights of an older generation and representatives of the nineties generation, challenging the idea that there is a sharp generational break between these groups. Finally, Carney demonstrates that tragic experience is often denied by the social discourse of Englishness, and that these playwrights make a crucial critical intervention by dramatizing the tragic.
Download or read book Rethinking Tragedy written by Rita Felski and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-02-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking collection provokes a major reassessment of the significance of tragedy and the tragic in late modernity. A distinguished group of scholars and theorists extends the discussion of tragedy beyond its usual parameters to include film, popular culture, and contemporary politics. Seven new essays—as well as eight essays originally published in a New Literary History special issue on tragedy—address important, previously neglected areas of tragedy and postcolonial criticism. The new material explores the tragic dimensions of popular culture, the relationship between tragedy and pity, and feminism's avoidance of the tragic, and includes an incisive history of tragic theory. Classic and cutting-edge, this collection offers a provocative, accessible, and comprehensive treatment of tragedy and tragic theory.
