Book excerpt: This World Bank (Washington, D.C.) kit is a case study designed to introduce secondary school social studies students to a project in Kenya established to strengthen small-scale industries. The kit contains a pamphlet, a booklet, a sound filmstrip, and a teacher's guide. The pamphlet, "Economic Summary: Kenya," points out the severe problems Kenya faces in raising standards of living. The booklet, "Small-Scale Industries in Kenya," examines Kenya Industrial Estates, Limited (KIE), a government-owned company set up to assist small-scale industries. It tells the story of a carpenter who wants to expand his furniture business, and of the people who help him. The important role that small-scale industries play in the process of improving living conditions is illustrated. The filmstrip, "Small-Scale Industries in Kenya," reviews the contents of the booklet. The teacher's guide contains: (1) objectives for learning; (2) 8 lesson plans; (3) the filmstrip; and (4) 12 reproducible student worksheets, including one test. Maps, tables, and black and white photographs are included. (JB)

Book Synopsis Small Scale Industry in Kenya by : Peter Kilby
Download or read book Small Scale Industry in Kenya written by Peter Kilby and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: This study treats small scale industry in Kenya. It is common wisdom that small production units possess a number of virtues and that special effort is warranted to promote the growth of this subsector. Such a view is acceptable, but in need of some refinement. It is the argument of this paper that for each country there exists an optimum size distribution of firms. This optimum is determined at any point in time by technological factors and by the pattern of demand. Owing to market imperfections and government policies that are biased with respect to scale, observed shares of output and employment in many underdeveloped countries are heavily skewed toward large scale enterprise. This malproportionality is strikingly evident in the case of Kenya.

Book Synopsis Entrepreneurship in Micro-enterprises by : Kenneth R. Gray
Download or read book Entrepreneurship in Micro-enterprises written by Kenneth R. Gray and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and important work studies Kenya's small scale manufacturers. What makes the book unique is Gray's sub-sector approach, which focuses on the particular industries of tailoring, woodwork and metalwork. Gray investigates the development of these sub-sectors by taking a strategic management approach. Such an approach allows the author to assess enterprise competitiveness and profitability within industries. Readers will find that the information in this book serves as a well-needed supplement to the literature on the World Bank's July 1995 decision to focus more on micro-enterprise development. The book will appeal to many different audiences including development agencies concerned with the economic development community and the international academic community. Business and social science students who are interested in how work is organized in the family and the effects of modernization on traditional society will also benefit from reading this book.

Book Synopsis Development of Small-scale Industries During the New Order Government in Indonesia by : Tulus Tahi Hamonangan Tambunan

This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: As in many other LDCs, in Indonesia small-scale industries (SSIs) are important, particularly with respect to the creation of employment opportunities. SSIs are expected to absorb many millions of workers who have been displaced by current economic crisis. This work seeks to explain the pattern of development of SSIs in Indonesia within a broader theoretical framework. It also deals with a number of SSI development-related aspects that in Indonesia so far have never or rarely been studied, such as the formation of strategic alliance, cluster development, and application of theories of flexible specialization to the LDCs. The book also tries to examine empirically the effects of the current economic crisis and to assess theoretically the likely impact of the full implementation of the agreed IMF reform package on SSI development in the country. Main problems faced by small producers and the government policy environment are highlighted through several detailed examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume examines why small-scale enterprises have performed so well in Indonesia, given that the country’s labour force is expected to expand and urbanise rapidly between 1995 and 2025. It also considers what future contribution small-scale enterprises could make. Peter van Diermen explores the industrial organisation of family businesses, local development in a global context and family businesses in Jakarta in considering the unexpected success of small-scale enterprises and the future contributions they could make.
Book Synopsis Small-scale Enterprises in Rural Kenya by : Daniyel Felzenshṭain
Download or read book Small-scale Enterprises in Rural Kenya written by Daniyel Felzenshṭain and published by Kit Pub. This book was released on 2000 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this book argue that small-scale enterprises are not necessarily the marginal features of developing economies they are often thought to be. If micro-enterprises with 0-4 employees succeed in developing into small enterprises with 5-19 workers, they can form a dynamic sector with vital links to agriculture and other sectors of the economy. Taking this argument as a starting point for their research in the Nakuru and Kericho Districts in Kenya, the authors aim to explain why most micro-enterprises remain small. They convincingly demonstrate that small-scale enterprises face considerable constraints at all stages of their development. These constraints specifically operate against female-owned, rurally located and service-oriented businesses. Innovative policy interventions are needed to remove these constraints and enhance the sector's contribution to peoples' cash incomes and economic welfare. By providing detailed information on the features of small-scale enterprises and their problems during formation, operation and growth, this book lays the foundations for effective and tailor-made support.
Book Synopsis Rural-Urban Dynamics in the East African Mountains by : Racaud, Sylvain
Download or read book Rural-Urban Dynamics in the East African Mountains written by Racaud, Sylvain and published by Mkuki na Nyota Publishers. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a long-term cooperation between French and East African scholars and universities under the aegis of the French Institute of Research in Africa (IFRA-Nairobi). This book presents the main results of the research program Cooperation for University and Scientific Research (CORUS): Mountains and Small and Medium Cities in East Africa: Environmental Management, Flows of People and Resources, funded by the French Ministry of Foreign Afairs and supported by IFRA-Nairobi. The specific subject is to rethink the development of the East African mountains in relation to the fast growing towns and cities that surround them. Three East-African mountains were chosen: Mount Kenya, Mount Elgon (Ugandan side) and Uporoto Mountains (Tanzania). Comparisons are included, especially with Mount Kilimanjaro, which has been studied in previous books and programs (e.g. Kilimanjaro: Mountain, Memory and Modernity, Mkuki na Nyota, Dar es Salaam, 2006). The authors are East African (Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya) and French scholars, most of them geographers. Made from 12 contributions, this book focuses on a recent change in those mountains: a growing urbanization which shapes new mountain systems. This phenomenon, which is actually a major upheaval, is the focal point of this book, giving rise to this question: what are the links between Rural-Urban evolution in such contexts? What are the impacts on livelihoods and development? This book, covering social and environmental scientific issues relating to Rural-Urban nature, is the first of its kind for African mountains.
