Book Synopsis Terrestrial Mammal Conservation: Global Evidence for the Effects of Interventions for Terrestrial Mammals Excluding Bats and Primates by : Nick A. Littlewood
Download or read book Terrestrial Mammal Conservation: Global Evidence for the Effects of Interventions for Terrestrial Mammals Excluding Bats and Primates written by Nick A. Littlewood and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrestrial Mammal Conservation provides a thorough summary of the available scientific evidence of what is known, or not known, about the effectiveness of all of the conservation actions for wild terrestrial mammals across the world (excluding bats and primates, which are covered in separate synopses). Actions are organized into categories based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature classifications of direct threats and conservation actions. Over the course of fifteen chapters, the authors consider interventions as wide ranging as creating uncultivated margins around fields, prescribed burning, setting hunting quotas and removing non-native mammals. This book is written in an accessible style and is designed to be an invaluable resource for anyone concerned with the practical conservation of terrestrial mammals. The authors consulted an international group of terrestrial mammal experts and conservationists to produce this synopsis. Funding was provided by the MAVA Foundation, Arcadia and National Geographic Big Cats Initiative. Terrestrial Mammal Conservation is the seventeenth publication in the Conservation Evidence Series, linked to the online resource www.ConservationEvidence.com. Conservation Evidence Synopses are designed to promote a more evidence-based approach to biodiversity conservation. Others in the series include Bat Conservation, Primate Conservation, Bird Conservation and Forest Conservation and more are in preparation. Expert assessment of the evidence summarised within synopses is provided online and within the annual publication What Works in Conservation.
Book Synopsis Inventory of Mammals (Excluding Bats) of Thomas Stone National Historic Site by : National Park Service
Download or read book Inventory of Mammals (Excluding Bats) of Thomas Stone National Historic Site written by National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of mammals (excluding bats) at Thomas Stone National Historic Site (THST) was conducted from 2002 to 2003 to document the presence of > 90% of the mammals in the park, describe species distributions, relative abundances, and habitat-specific richness, and provide recommendations for management and conservation. Surveys relied on live trapping with Sherman and Tomahawk traps for small to medium-size mammals, the use of pitfall traps to capture small shrews, direct observation of individuals and their sign (tracks, scats), and remote photography. We identified two principal habitats – grassland (fields) and deciduous forest – and less expansive tracts of mixed deciduous-coniferous forest, wind-disturbed deciduous forest, and additional targeted locations for sampling.

Book Synopsis Ecology of small mammals by : D.M. Stoddart
Download or read book Ecology of small mammals written by D.M. Stoddart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their largely descriptive beginnings about a half century ago, studies on the ecology of small mammals have mushroomed in number, scope, content and complexity. Yet strangely, or perhaps not so strangely if one considers the extent and complexity of ecological interactions, the main problems for which the early workers sought answers still defy complete analysis, and basic hypotheses remain untested if not even untestable. The same holds true for so many branches of animal ecology that it seems to be the complexity of the concepts that frustrates efforts rather than the subject species. Like all branches of science, small mammal ecology has been subject to a series of fashionable approaches, one following another as tech nology penetrates previously impregnable regions. Doubtless the future development of our science will be punctuated by wave upon wave of new endeavour in whole fields that are perhaps even yet unidentified. Answers to the complex questions which ecologists ask do not come easily. Increasingly though, they arise in direct proportion to the efforts expended upon their elucidation. Many studies have achieved such a high level of elegance, in terms of manpower and apparatus, that there is a feeling that questions asked when such resources are unavailable are not worth asking. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many a complex model has failed fully to explain the phenomenon for which it was construc ted because of a lack of basic field data on the species' natural h~story.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity and Environmental Change by : Emma Burns
Download or read book Biodiversity and Environmental Change written by Emma Burns and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Long-term ecological data are critical for informing long-term trends in biodiversity and trends in environmental change. The Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) is a major initiative of the Australian Government and one of its key areas of investment is to provide funding for a network of long-term ecological research plots around Australia (LTERN). This book highlights some of the temporal changes in the environment and/or in biodiversity that have occurred in different ecosystems, ranging from tropical rainforests, wet eucalypt forests and alpine regions through to rangelands and deserts. Many important trends and changes are documented and they often provide new insights that were previously poorly understood or unknown. These data are precisely the kinds of data so desperately needed to better quantify the temporal trajectories in the environment and biodiversity in Australia.

Book Synopsis The Cutting Edge by : Robert A. Fimbel
Download or read book The Cutting Edge written by Robert A. Fimbel and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-19 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent decades have seen unprecedented growth in the scale and intensity of industrial forestry. Directly and indirectly, it has degraded the wildlife and ecological integrity of these tropical forests, prompting a need to evaluate the impact of current forest management practices and reconsider how best to preserve the integrity of the biosphere. Synthesizing the body of knowledge of leading scientists and professionals in tropical forest ecology and management, this book's thirty chapters examine in detail the interplay between timber harvesting and wildlife, from hunted and protected habitats to invertebrates and large mammal species. Collectively, the contributors suggest that better management is pivotal to the maintenance of the tropics' valuable biodiversity, arguing that we must realize that tropical forests harbor the majority (perhaps 70 to 80 percent) of the world's animal species. Further, they suggest modifications to existing practices that can ensure a better future for our valuable resources.

Book Synopsis Ecology of Small Mammals of Desert & Montane Ecosystems by : I. Prakash
Download or read book Ecology of Small Mammals of Desert & Montane Ecosystems written by I. Prakash and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2005-06-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small mammals (Rodents and Insectivores) constitute 31.18% of total mammal species found in India. In spite of their abundance, this largest group among mammals has received little attention of ecologists. From the geomorphological standpoint Rajasthan offers multiple possibilities. The Aravallis diagonally bisect the state into western arid and eastern semi-arid and mesic zones. The southern and southeastern parts of state have various rock systems. Present book is an endeavour to cover small mammals of the whole state. The book is first of its kind in India, which takes into account habitat preference, food and feeding behaviour, home range, activity pattern, reproductive behaviour, biochemical communication and physiology of small mammals of desert and hilly terrain. It also includes zoogeography of small mammals found in Rajasthan and changes in faunistic composition being brought by canal and tube well irrigation. It is expected that book will be quite useful for students, researchers, and teachers of Ecology and Zoology.

Book Synopsis Life Strategies, Human Evolution, Environmental Design by : V. Geist
Download or read book Life Strategies, Human Evolution, Environmental Design written by V. Geist and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consider that you were asked how to ensure human survival. Where would you begin? Conservation of resources jumps to mind. We need to conserve resources in order that economic activities may continue. Alas, this is a false start. Resources are always defined by a given economic system, and only it determines what is and what is not a resource. Therefore, conserving resources implies only the perpetua tion of the appropriate economic system. Conservation of resources as we know them has nothing to do with the survival of mankind, but it has very much to do with the survival of the industrial system and society we live in today. We have to start, therefore, at a more basic level. This level, some may argue, is addressed by ensuring for human beings "clean genes. " Again, this is a mistaken beginning. It is thoroughly mistaken-for reasons of science. It is a false start because malfunctioning organs and morphological structures are not only due to deleterious hereditary factors but particularly due to unfavorable environments during early growth and development. Moreover, eugenics is not acceptable to any but a small fraction of society. Eugenics may not be irrelevant to our future, but is premature and should be of little concern until we understand how human genes and environment interact.
