Book excerpt: Volume IV of the ed-Dur series completes the previous publications on glass, tombs and architectural remains discovered during the Belgian excavations from 1986 until 1995 at ed-Dur. This harbor site was the largest settlement of the late 1st century BCE and 1st century CE on the Arabian coast between Qatar and the promontory of Musandam. The range of the finds reflects the siteâe(tm)s extensive commercial contacts as well as its local SE-Arabian identity. It was part of an Arabian kingdom and could be the Omana mentioned by Classical authors. Apart from local produce that provide insight in the local economy and subsistence strategies, there are imports from Rome and the Mediterranean basin, Mesopotamia and Iran, the Indian subcontinent, North-East and Southern Arabia. The volume first discusses the regional SE-Arabian Abiel coinage and the presence of foreign coins, followed by metal finds and beads, bone and ivory, stone, pottery, shell, coral, glass and plaster objects.

Book excerpt: Located on the coast of the Emirate of Umm al-Qaiwain (UAE), the site of Ed-Dur is without doubt the largest coastal site of the late 1st. cent. B.C. - 1st cent. A.D. between Qatar and the promontory of Musandam. It could have been the site of Ommana, mentionned as a harbour, by Classical authors. In 1986 a European consortium of four countries (Belgium, Denmark, France and Great Britain) was created in order to launch full scale excavations at this site in SE-Arabia. A team from Ghent University was active there, on a yearly basis, until 1995. During these 9 seasons numerous architectural remains and objects were discovered. In the present volume 121 tombs, with their burial goods, are published in full. All tombs and objects are presented in drawings and photographs, so as to provide a quick release of the discoveries. Different types of graves were found, from plain individual tombs to rectangular cists and large semi-subterranean multiple tombs covered by a barrel vault and accessible via an entrance, occasionally with stairs. However, a large above-ground grave was equally discovered. Although mostly plundered, several undisturbed tombs of different type were found, containing numerous objects.

Book excerpt: The exhibition organized by Sharjah Archaeology Museum in collaboration with Umm Al Quwain Antiquities and Heritage Department is hosting 67 unique artifacts from the collections of Umm Al Quwain Museum that date back to the Stone Age. The artifacts include flint tools, delicate jewelry and small, square and cylindrical stone stamps from Tell Abraq, which confirms the long history between the people of Ed-Dur and Mesopotamia and Sindh more than 3000 years ago. The collections focus on the status of Ed-Dur port in Umm Al Quwain and its role in the trade movement in the Arabian Peninsula during the early centuries CE. They also explore the port's relationship with Meliha in the inland areas of Sharjah, as they both were under one cultural range that created a part of the trade network between the UAE, Iraq, Yemen, India, and the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. The exhibition offers visitors a chance to learn about the important discoveries found in Ed-Dur Temple site - the only one of its kind to be located on the coast. Among the discoveries is an oil lamp, a basin with Aramaic inscriptions, as well as two eagle statues which possibly stood at the entrance of the temple.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the long-term continuity of large-scale states and empires, and its effect on the Near East’s social fabric, including the fundamental changes that occurred to major social institutions. Its geographical coverage spans, from east to west, modern-day Libya and Egypt to Central Asia, and from north to south, Anatolia to southern Arabia, incorporating modern-day Oman and Yemen. Its temporal coverage spans from the late eighth century BCE to the seventh century CE during the rise of Islam and collapse of the Sasanian Empire. The authors argue that the persistence of large states and empires starting in the eighth/seventh centuries BCE, which continued for many centuries, led to new socio-political structures and institutions emerging in the Near East. The primary processes that enabled this emergence were large-scale and long-distance movements, or population migrations. These patterns of social developments are analysed under different aspects: settlement patterns, urban structure, material culture, trade, governance, language spread and religion, all pointing at movement as the main catalyst for social change. This book’s argument is framed within a larger theoretical framework termed as ‘universalism’, a theory that explains many of the social transformations that happened to societies in the Near East, starting from the Neo-Assyrian period and continuing for centuries. Among other influences, the effects of these transformations are today manifested in modern languages, concepts of government, universal religions and monetized and globalized economies.

The range of interest stretches from the small groups of the earliest Neolithic, through Bronze and Iron Age civilizations, to modern nation states. The coexistence is, of its very nature reciprocal, resulting in changes in both society and landscape. In some instances the adaptations may be judged successful in terms of human needs, but failure is common and even the successful cases are ephemeral when judged in the light of history. Comparisons and contrasts between the various cases can be made at various scales from global through inter-regional, to regional and smaller scales. At the global scale, all societies deal with major problems of climate change, sea-level rise, and with ubiquitous problems such as soil erosion and landscape degradation. Inter-regional differences bring out significant detail with one region suffering from drought when another suffers from widespread flooding. For example, desertification in North Africa and the Near East contrasts with the temperate countries of southern Europe where the landscape-effects of deforestation are more obvious. And China and Japan offer an interesting comparison from the standpoint of geological hazards to society - large, unpredictable and massively erosive rivers in the former case, volcanoes and accompanying earthquakes in the latter. Within the North African region localized climatic changes led to abandonment of some desertified areas with successful adjustments in others, with the ultimate evolution into the formative civilization of Egypt, the "Gift of the Nile". At a smaller scale it is instructive to compare the city-states of the Medieval and early Renaissance times that developed in the watershed of a single river, the Arno in Tuscany, and how Pisa, Siena and Florence developed and reached their golden periods at different times depending on their location with regard to proximity to the sea, to the main trunk of the river, or in the adjacent hills. Also noteworthy is the role of technology in opening up opportunities for a society. Consider the Netherlands and how its history has been formed by the technical problem of a populous society dealing with too much water, as an inexorably rising sea threatens their landscape; or the case of communities in Colorado trying to deal with too little water for farmers and domestic users, by bringing their supply over a mountain chain. These and others cases included in the book, provide evidence of the successes, near misses and outright failures that mark our ongoing relationship with landscape throughout the history of Homo sapiens. The hope is that compilations such as this will lead to a better understanding of the issue and provide us with knowledge valuable in planning a sustainable modus vivendi between humanity and landscape for as long as possible. Audience: The book will interest geomorphologists, geologists, geographers, archaeologists, anthropologists, ecologists, environmentalists, historians and others in the academic world. Practically, planners and managers interested in landscape/environmental conditions will find interest in these pages, and more generally the increasingly large body of opinion in the general public, with concerns about Planet Earth, will find much to inform their opinions.
