Book excerpt: Samual and his family are born slaves. Every day they look beyond the harbor filled with Confederate ships, to the Atlantic Ocean, where the Union ships are--and potentially, their freedom. If only they could get to those ships somehow....Then, on May13, 1862, Samuel and his family risk it all to be free. /DIV DIVBased on a true story, Doreen Rappaport weaves a riveting tale of a boy and his family aboard the gunboat Planter. Captained by Robert Smalls and loaded with fellow slaves, the ship flees to the Union fleet to gain freedom from slavery and deliver much-needed ammunition to the Union Navy. Rappaport's suspenseful account, illustrated with the moody paintings of Curtis James, creates a vivid and relatable picture of this little-known tale of the civil war.

Book excerpt: Albert Tang was only five years old, but he can still vividly recall that day in 1970 when he opened the front door to his home in Cambodia. He saw a group of armed soldiers had arrived to guard the perimeter of the school where he and his family lived. This signaled the beginning of the Cambodian civil war—as well as the atrocities and genocide by dictator Pol Pot’s communist regime. In this memoir, Albert provides the perspective of a young boy who witnessed the brutal Khmer Rouge in action and who suffered under the communists. Their actions not only devastated the adults living under the regime but also the children who were robbed of the opportunity to go to school. Many Cambodians fled their country and became refugees in Thailand. Many of them never returned home. But with determination, perseverance, a positive attitude, hard work, and some luck, some of these refugees found the chance to start a new life. Join Albert as he shares an inspiring story of endurance, courage, and hope in The Road to Freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • SELECTED BY THE ECONOMIST AS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR “A rambunctious book that is itself alive with the animal spirits of the marketplace.”—The Wall Street Journal Freedom’s Forge reveals how two extraordinary American businessmen—General Motors automobile magnate William “Big Bill” Knudsen and shipbuilder Henry J. Kaiser—helped corral, cajole, and inspire business leaders across the country to mobilize the “arsenal of democracy” that propelled the Allies to victory in World War II. Drafting top talent from companies like Chrysler, Republic Steel, Boeing, Lockheed, GE, and Frigidaire, Knudsen and Kaiser turned auto plants into aircraft factories and civilian assembly lines into fountains of munitions. In four short years they transformed America’s army from a hollow shell into a truly global force, laying the foundations for the country’s rise as an economic as well as military superpower. Freedom’s Forge vividly re-creates American industry’s finest hour, when the nation’s business elites put aside their pursuit of profits and set about saving the world. Praise for Freedom’s Forge “A rarely told industrial saga, rich with particulars of the growing pains and eventual triumphs of American industry . . . Arthur Herman has set out to right an injustice: the loss, down history’s memory hole, of the epic achievements of American business in helping the United States and its allies win World War II.”—The New York Times Book Review “Magnificent . . . It’s not often that a historian comes up with a fresh approach to an absolutely critical element of the Allied victory in World War II, but Pulitzer finalist Herman . . . has done just that.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “A compulsively readable tribute to ‘the miracle of mass production.’ ”—Publishers Weekly “The production statistics cited by Mr. Herman . . . astound.”—The Economist “[A] fantastic book.”—Forbes “Freedom’s Forge is the story of how the ingenuity and energy of the American private sector was turned loose to equip the finest military force on the face of the earth. In an era of gathering threats and shrinking defense budgets, it is a timely lesson told by one of the great historians of our time.”—Donald Rumsfeld

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Searching for Freedom: The Nat Turner Revolt is a story about a young African boy who had matured into a man being considered a fugitive of American law. The information provided in this story is for the readers of this story to think about Nat Turner more as a person instead of a fugitive of the law or a degraded slave. Many of the books published about Nat Turner have a lack of information regarding Nat Turner's real life, the people of the town of South Hampton, and the federal government of the United States when it was just considered the government of the North American continent. A few of the political figures mentioned in this book such as Sir James Monroe, Sir John Tyler, and Sir Andrew Jackson were used to bring more life to the story to explain to the readers how things were going based on government planning and how life was for the people living in the early 1800s. Nat Turner's true life story is meant to be known by not just the African American nationality but by all the world's nationalities because of what Nat Turner stood for during his life. Nat Turner was against the enslavement of black Africans as well as the enslavement of other nationalities. He believed that all men have the right to be independent to raise their own families and to choose their own paths. This story also explains how Nat Turner had found love and the new associations that he had made after he had escaped from his slave owner's residence. Nat Turner had freed many enslaved blacks, and he and his men had made new families after they had broken free from the custody of their slave owners. Benjamin Turner, Nat Turner's slave owner, had traveled from place to place looking for Nat Turner for several years until Nat Turner was found. Nat Turner had visited quite a few places during his lifetime, and he had also made several children with a few different women. Nat Turner had done a lot during his life compared to the enslaved blacks, and he was still a very young man when he was killed. Nat Turner had become a legend behind the moves that he had chosen to make, and he had made two very close friends who were considered his brothers who had escaped from their slave owner's residence with Nat. Nat was a great leader, and some people even considered him to be a king behind the way that he had taken a stand for himself and for his people to be free.

Book excerpt: This gripping and important book brings alive over two hundred years of humanitarian interventions. Freedom’s Battle illuminates the passionate debates between conscience and imperialism ignited by the first human rights activists in the 19th century, and shows how a newly emergent free press galvanized British, American, and French citizens to action by exposing them to distant atrocities. Wildly romantic and full of bizarre enthusiasms, these activists were pioneers of a new political consciousness. And their legacy has much to teach us about today’s human rights crises.

Book excerpt: The story is very strange to everybody, especially to the ones who have not lost the freedom. The readers would ask themselves, "Is it the real life story?" The Road to Freedom is too hard and risky. The dear price to pay for freedom is the life of the author and all the people who want to get there. The story is very attractive and amazes the reader from beginning to end. Kevin Dinh- Former captain ARVN. The Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge is known as The World’s Toughest Row. Very few have completed the three-thousand-mile race from the Canary Islands to Barbados—fewer than those who have climbed Mount Everest or gone into space. But thirty-two-year-old Julia Immonen and four or the women were determined to not only complete the challenge, but to become the fastest all-female team to ever do so. Row for Freedom chronicles that dramatic journey, detailing the grueling, peril-filled crossing that broke two world records. It weaves together Julia’s search for hope and purpose against a background of relationships scarred by violence. As Julia’s physical and emotional treks unfold, you also learn about the plight of the thirty million victims of the modern-day slave trade that serves as the motivation for her row.
