Book Synopsis Kant, Hume, and the Interruption of Dogmatic Slumber by : Abraham Anderson
Download or read book Kant, Hume, and the Interruption of Dogmatic Slumber written by Abraham Anderson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kant once famously declared in the Prolegomena that "it was the objection of David Hume that first, many years ago, interrupted my dogmatic slumber." Abraham Anderson here offers an interpretation of this utterance, arguing that Hume roused Kant not (as has often been thought) by challenging the principle that "every event has a cause" which governs experience, but rather by attacking the principle of sufficient reason, the basis of both rationalist metaphysics and the cosmological proof of the existence of God. This suggestion, Anderson proposes, allows us to reconcile Kant's declaration with his later assertion that it was the Antinomy of pure reason - the clash of opposing theses - that first woke him from dogmatic slumber. For the Antinomy suspends the dogmatic principle of sufficient reason; in doing so, Anderson proposes, it is extending Hume's attack on that principle. This reading of Kant also explains why Kant speaks of "the objection of David Hume" after mentioning Hume's attack on metaphysics. The "objection" that Kant has in mind, Anderson argues, is a challenge to metaphysics, rather than to the foundations of empirical knowledge. Consequently, Anderson's analysis issues a new view of Hume himself-as primarily interested, not in the foundations of experience, but in the problem of metaphysics and theology. It thereby positions Kant and Hume as champions of the Enlightenment in its struggle with superstition. Shedding new light on the connection between two of the most influential figures in the history of philosophy, this volume will appeal not only to scholars of Kant, Hume, and early modern philosophy, but to philosophers and students interested in the history of philosophy and metaphysics generally.

Book excerpt: Life rarely works out as we planned it. Often it works out worse and sometimes better than we planned. It is my hypothesis, based on extensive clinical experience as a psychiatrist and a psychoanalyst - that when we live life out of the outer fringes of our psyche, it works out worse than we hoped for. When we live life out of the deeper center of our psyche - our Soul, it plays out much better than we anticipated. Life lived out of our Ego - the center of our outer, conscious personality is lived on the outer fringes of our potential. Life lived in tune with the Soul, the center of our deepest personality and the pacemaker of our destiny, blossoms to its fullest potential. The soul conveys its message via the latent code of archetypes or timeless wisdom templates that have crystallized in human consciousness over several million years of experience as a species. This latent code lives in myths and stories of each culture. In this book, I have presented one such group of stories or wisdom templates. This is the latent code of Shakti - the life force that energies and guides us on our life course. These are the stories of mysterious goddesses of Hindu culture, collectively called Shakti or Spiritual energy that can help us live out of our soul. Welcome to the realm of Shakti-the inner goddess in every man and every woman. Whenever we are dealing with personal crisis, life transition, a new beginning, a traumatic event, a medical or psychological problem, a relationship tangle, a major life decision, some spiritual or psychological crossroad, this latent code is activated by our soul to guide us. This helps us to make an informed decision consistent with our life purpose and spiritual calling. For each specific life problem, there is a corresponding aspect of the latent code that spurs us onto our path. To prepare for a new endeavor, the latent code of the goddess of arts and academics Saraswati steps in, To attain peace and prosperity, code of Laxmi guides our path. When we walk the line between self assertion and mutuality, code of Parvati guides our path. When we are struggling to tame the dark and dysfunctional aspects of our personality, the code of Kali helps us trim our shadow. Life transitions often call for a period of void and inner emptiness before new life structures could be created. The code of the great grandmother Aditi presides over inner void and new creations. When we are trying to integrate the opposites in our nature, the latent code of the archetype of the sacred marriage - the dance of the masculine Shiva and the eternal feminine Shakti provide a useful template.

Book Synopsis The Slumber of Christianity by : Ted Dekker
Download or read book The Slumber of Christianity written by Ted Dekker and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2005-07-03 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As believers, our walk with God is motivated by hope-not the bland, vague notion most people have, but the expectation of an exotic, pleasurable inheritance that guides us and fires our passion...or, at least, should. Ted Dekker has written an exposé on the death of pleasure within the Church. Because many of us have set aside hope and the inspired imagination that drives it, Dekker says we have been lulled into a slumber of boredom, even despondency. Our faith wanes, the joy at having been liberated fades, and we feel powerless. The Slumber of Christianity explores what robs us of happiness and how we can rediscover it and live lives that rekindle hope. The pursuit of pleasure is a gift to all humans-a function of the Creator himself, who is bent upon our happiness. It's time for Christians to reclaim our inheritance of pleasure. The Slumber of Christianity will inflame hearts toward full-fledged, mind-expanding encounters with hope, through the imagination.
Book Synopsis Kant, Hume, and the Interruption of Dogmatic Slumber by : Abraham Anderson
Download or read book Kant, Hume, and the Interruption of Dogmatic Slumber written by Abraham Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an examination of Hume's influence on Kant's philosophy, arguing that Hume inspired Kant's Critique of Pure Reason not by challenging empirical knowledge, but by attacking metaphysics and the proofs of the existence of God. It posits that both Kant and Hume were primarily interested not in skepticism about science or ordinary experience, but in a question of much greater existential and political importance: whether the belief in God can be based on proof.
