Book Synopsis Dictionary of the Prague School of Linguistics by : Josef Vachek
Download or read book Dictionary of the Prague School of Linguistics written by Josef Vachek and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-06-23 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first English version of a text out of print for more than 40 years, summarising the positions and key concepts of an influential stream of linguistic thought. Using quotations as entries, J. Vachek (1909-1997), a leading advocate of the Prague School, employed more than 160 sources, papers and monographs, by well over 30 representatives of the school (Mathesius, Trnka, Skalička, Daneš, Dokulil, Mukařovský, Jakobson, Trubetzkoy, Isachenko, and others). The dictionary both captures the pioneering efforts and achievements of the school from its foundation in 1926, and provides a framework for assessing the current state of affairs, attesting to its originality and serving as a preventive to treading paths already explored. The headword concepts are provided with French, German and Czech equivalents and Vachek's original preface is supplemented by a foreword which traces the development of the school up to the present date and puts it into perspective.

Book Synopsis Lexical and Semantic Aspects of Proverbs by : František Čermák
Download or read book Lexical and Semantic Aspects of Proverbs written by František Čermák and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of paremiology is traditionally an interdisciplinary one starting with folklore, paremiology, language, literature, history, and other fields, their mutual influence being a peculiar and highly valued feature for all. This book is linguistic in nature, offering a number of aspects of contemporary languages and their proverbs studied, though mostly on lexical, semantic and pragmatic aspects, based on language corpora findings, subsequently leading to proverb minima. Apart from selected proverb data excerpted from tens of languages, there is an effort to arrive at a system of proverbs having a wider orientation based on the goal set to map proverbs in a language in a systematic and reliable way, showing proverbs and their use in large, multimilion language corpora. Next to its academic goals covering proverb theory of use and system, the book may be used by lexicocographers, monolingual and comparative, and language teachers in their textbook compilation.

Download or read book Anthropology of Color written by Robert E. MacLaury and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-11-21 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of color categorization has always been intrinsically multi- and inter-disciplinary, since its beginnings in the nineteenth century. The main contribution of this book is to foster a new level of integration among different approaches to the anthropological study of color. The editors have put great effort into bringing together research from anthropology, linguistics, psychology, semiotics, and a variety of other fields, by promoting the exploration of the different but interacting and complementary ways in which these various perspectives model the domain of color experience. By so doing, they significantly promote the emergence of a coherent field of the anthropology of color. As of February 2018, this e-book is freely available, thanks to the support of libraries working with Knowledge Unlatched.
