Book excerpt: This 2015 Article IV Consultation highlights that Slovakia remains among Europe’s stronger economies, with growth continuing to pick up in 2015, driven by strong domestic demand. A push to spend expiring European Union funds has underpinned rising investment while job creation and real wage growth have supported private consumption. Unemployment has fallen significantly since 2013, but is still about 11 percent overall, and is much higher for the long-term unemployed, youth, and women. The outlook is favorable with growth of 3–3.5 percent expected through the medium-term, reflecting sustained domestic demand as well as further contributions from the important export sector as substantial additional foreign auto sector investment is planned.

The authorities and IMF staff agreed that the recession represents a permanent loss of potential output and lower potential growth. Relatively sound fiscal policies in the pre-crisis period helped contain the deficit and bring down the public debt. The financial sector is weathering the global financial crisis generally well. Unemployment and its regional dispersion are a major concern. The share of workers with higher education is low.

Book excerpt: This 2005 Article IV Consultation highlights that recent accession to the European Union and gains in growth performance reinforced the Czech Republic’s position as one of the most open and developed economies among the new member states. Thanks to substantial foreign direct investment, its manufacturing sector is closely integrated into cross-border production networks, and foreign-owned firms now account for most of industrial exports. Banking sector indicators are positive, and bank lending—led by credit to households—continue to rebound. Past restructuring and improved risk management have also strengthened banks.
Book Synopsis Slovakia's 2004 Tax and Welfare Reform by : David Keith Moore
Download or read book Slovakia's 2004 Tax and Welfare Reform written by David Keith Moore and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper reviews Slovakia's comprehensive reforms to its taxation and welfare systems in 2004, including the introduction of a flat-rate income tax and single-rate value-added tax (VAT), and linkage of social benefits to participation in labor market programs. Though revenues following the reform are lower as a ratio to GDP, the paper argues that the reforms have helped encourage investment and improved efficiency by broadening the tax base, reducing the administrative burden, and improving work incentives. The paper also looks at some implications of the reforms for income distribution and social protection.
Book Synopsis Institutional trust and economic policy Lessons from the history of the Euro by : Dóra Győrffy
Download or read book Institutional trust and economic policy Lessons from the history of the Euro written by Dóra Győrffy and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-30 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book seeks to link theoretical debates on the relevance of trust in economic outcomes with the current arguments about the origins and lessons of the subprime crisis. By what mechanisms does trust influence economic outcomes? Under what conditions do these mechanisms prevail? How do debates about trust help our understanding of the subprime crisis in the European Union? By integrating insights from Post-Keynesian, Austrian and new institutional economics, the central proposition of the analysis is that the presence or absence of institutional trust creates virtuous and vicious cycles in law-abiding, which critically influence the possibility for economic agents to have realistic long-term plans.

Its successes were based on the long-lasting effects of significant structural reforms and privatization during the 1990s, which also facilitated Hungary’s outward orientation, foreign direct investment inflows, strong export performance, flexible labor and product markets, and sound banking system. The success was also rooted in undertaking macroeconomic adjustment measures when needed, and in maintaining an adequate level of international competitiveness.

The authorities’ medium-term fiscal objective is appropriate, but fiscal framework legislation that would anchor policy is yet to be approved by parliament. The central bank’s use of an exchange rate floor to achieve its inflation target has helped stem deflationary pressures, but inflation is still well below target. The financial system is sound and resilient to shocks. Policy recommendations. The current account deficit remains fully financed by FDI, and the underlying balance is consistent with external-debt stabilizing levels. The stock market retrenchment has been severe, but it followed substantial gains since 2006. Stress tests show that resilience of the banking system is well capitalized and highly profitable. Executive Directors stressed that the key to boosting long-term growth will be to increase low labor market participation. The financial supervision authority should give priority to formalizing understandings.
