Book excerpt: Slocum can’t refuse a damsel in distress. Slocum can get on his boss’ good side—and make a lofty sum of money—by returning his kidnapped wife, Julia Hodges. There’s only one catch: Julia doesn’t want to be rescued. She saved herself from her brutal husband by fleeing in the first place. Caught between a rock and a hard place, Slocum falls back on his manners. Ladies always come first—especially those in need. Besides, he was getting way too comfy being a cowhand, when there are men like his boss to be put in their place…

Trapped underground, fighting for his life, all he can do is think about how he got into this mess… It all started because of the most notorious road agent west of the Mississippi, Les Jeter. Slocum had to make sure that this outlaw paid for the lives he’d taken…along with Slocum’s most prized possession—his brother’s watch. And he wasn’t alone on the hunt. Ambrose Killian was obsessed with Jeter and wanted to bring this legend to justice for his own sordid reasons. Hot on his trail, Killian’s enlisted his luscious secretary, a rival criminal, and a gang of greedy lawmen. Slocum knew it would be a challenging job. Almost as challenging as staying alive as the minutes tick by—and the air runs out…

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was on the frontier, where “civilized” men and women confronted the “wilderness,” that Europeans first became Americans—or so authorities from Frederick Jackson Turner to Theodore Roosevelt claimed. But as the frontier disappeared, Americans believed they needed a new mechanism for fixing their collective identity; and they found it, historian Molly K. Varley suggests, in tales of white Americans held captive by Indians. For Americans in the Progressive Era (1890–1916) these stories of Indian captivity seemed to prove that the violence of national expansion had been justified, that citizens’ individual suffering had been heroic, and that settlers’ contact with Indians and wilderness still characterized the nation’s “soul.” Furthermore, in the act of memorializing white Indian captives—through statues, parks, and reissued narratives—small towns found a way of inscribing themselves into the national story. By drawing out the connections between actual captivity, captivity narratives, and the memorializing of white captives, Varley shows how Indian captivity became a means for Progressive Era Americans to look forward by looking back. Local boosters and cultural commentators used Indian captivity to define “Americanism” and to renew those frontier qualities deemed vital to the survival of the nation in the post-frontier world, such as individualism, bravery, ingenuity, enthusiasm, “manliness,” and patriotism. In Varley’s analysis of the Progressive Era mentality, contact between white captives and Indians represented a stage in the evolution of a new American people and affirmed the contemporary notion of America as a melting pot. Revealing how the recitation and interpretation of these captivity narratives changed over time—with shifting emphasis on brutality, gender, and ethnographic and historical accuracy—Americans Recaptured shows that tales of Indian captivity were no more fixed than American identity, but were consistently used to give that identity its own useful, ever-evolving shape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven battles and seventy-three skirmishes were fought in North Carolina during the Civil War. Although the number of men involved in many of these engagements was comparatively small, the campaigns and battles themselves were crucial in the grand strategy of the conflict and involved some of the most famous generals of the war. John Barrett presents the complete story of military engagements across the state, including the classical pitched battle of Bentonville, the siege of Fort Fisher, the amphibious campaigns on the coast, and cavalry sweeps such as Stoneman's raid. From and through North Carolina, men and supplies went to Lee's army in Virginia, making the Tar Heel state critical to Lee's ability to remain in the field during the closing months of the war, when the Union had cut off the West and Gulf South. This dependence upon North Carolina led to Stoneman's cavalry raid and Sherman's march through the state in 1865, the latter of which brought the horrors of total war and eventual defeat.
