Book Synopsis More Testing Times by : Wing Commander Mike Brooke AFC RAF
Download or read book More Testing Times written by Wing Commander Mike Brooke AFC RAF and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following his first three successful books, describing his long career as a military pilot, Mike Brooke completes the story with more tales of test flying during the 1980s and '90s. During this period his career changed to see him take control of flying at Farnborough and then at Boscombe Down, as well as off-the-cuff delivery missions to Saudi Arabia, 'bombing' in the name of science in the Arctic and the chance to fulfil a long-standing dream and fly the vintage SE.5a. This often hilarious memoir gives a revealing insight into military and civilian test flying of a wide range of aircraft, weapons and systems. As in his previous books, Brooke continues to use his personal experiences to give the reader a unique view of flight trials of the times, successes and failures. More Testing Times and its earlier volumes make for fascinating reading for any aviation enthusiast.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Longitudinal Static Stability of Low-Speed Aircraft by : F. G. Irving
Download or read book An Introduction to the Longitudinal Static Stability of Low-Speed Aircraft written by F. G. Irving and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs in Aeronautics and Astronautics, Volume 5: An Introduction to the Longitudinal Static Stability of Low-Speed Aircraft covers the concepts and practical applications of longitudinal static stability and control to the design and flight testing of low-speed aircraft. This book is composed of 11 chapters, and begins with a brief overview of the concepts of static stability. The next chapters deal with the forces and moments acting on an aeroplane, particularly on the wings and tail, as well as their properties, which are expressed in mathematical terms. These topics are followed by discussions on conditions of static stability; general stability considerations; the influence of static stability on the pilot's action, and measure of static stability for flight tests. The final chapters review the maneuverability in pitch and the motion of tailplanes. This book will prove useful to undergraduate aeronautics students.
Book Synopsis History of the Glider Pilot Regiment by : Claude Smith
Download or read book History of the Glider Pilot Regiment written by Claude Smith and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of this tiny, little-known British Army regiment and the daring men who piloted engineless aircraft to WWII’s major battlefields. The Glider Pilot Regiment, having been raised as the first element of the new Army Air Corps in 1942 and disbanded in 1957, can probably claim the dubious distinction of having been the smallest and shortest-lived regiment ever to form part of the British Army. Nevertheless, in those few years the regiment gained as much distinction as it has taken other units hundreds of years to achieve. Yet, strangely enough, the story of these heroic men who piloted their flimsy gliders to most of the important battlefields of the Second World War has never before been told. It is indeed a remarkable story, and no one is better qualified to tell it than Claude Smith, who himself served with the regiment and took part in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and later in the ill-fated landing at Arnhem, where he was taken prisoner. Smith tells the story of these supremely brave men factually and dispassionately, but it is impossible to read this book without being moved by their courage. As General Sir John Hackett says in his foreword: “Those who went to battle in gliders and above all those who got them there, the Glider Pilots, deserve our enduring esteem.” Includes maps and illustrations
