Book Synopsis Making Scientific Instruments in the Industrial Revolution by : A.D. Morrison-Low
Download or read book Making Scientific Instruments in the Industrial Revolution written by A.D. Morrison-Low and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the Industrial Revolution, it appeared that most scientific instruments were made and sold in London, but by the time of the Great Exhibition in 1851, a number of provincial firms had the self-confidence to exhibit their products in London to an international audience. How had this change come about, and why? This book looks at the four main, and two lesser, English centres known for instrument production outside the capital: Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield, along with the older population centres in Bristol and York. Making wide use of new sources, Dr Morrison-Low, curator of history of science at the National Museums of Scotland, charts the growth of these centres and provides a characterisation of their products. New information is provided on aspects of the trade, especially marketing techniques, sources of materials, tools and customer relationships. From contemporary evidence, she argues that the principal output of the provincial trade (with some notable exceptions) must have been into the London marketplace, anonymously, and at the cheaper end of the market. She also discusses the structure and organization of the provincial trade, and looks at the impact of new technology imported from other closely-allied trades. By virtue of its approach and subject matter the book considers aspects of economic and business history, gender and the family, the history of science and technology, material culture, and patterns of migration. It contains a myriad of stories of families and firms, of entrepreneurs and customers, and of organizations and arms of government. In bringing together this wide range of interests, Dr Morrison-Low enables us to appreciate how central the making, selling and distribution of scientific instruments was for the Industrial Revolution.
Book Synopsis The Ironmasters' Bags by : Paul Reynolds
Download or read book The Ironmasters' Bags written by Paul Reynolds and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-06-19 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During its development and at the time that the south Wales iron industry was at its most successful the only way (other than by personal contact) in which contact between the different branches of the industry could be maintained was by letter. Thus the postal service ' both the General Post Office and a multiplicity of private posts ' made a vital contribution to the success of the industry which so far has received little attention. This work traces the development of the postal service in the south Wales valleys from its primitive state in the mid-18th century to what had become a recognisably modern postal service a hundred years later. It is based on information derived from the archives of the Post Office itself and of the various iron companies, from contemporary newspapers and from oral tradition recorded by later historians in the Valleys.

Book Synopsis Gender, Work and Wages in Industrial Revolution Britain by : Joyce Burnette
Download or read book Gender, Work and Wages in Industrial Revolution Britain written by Joyce Burnette and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major study of the role of women in the labour market of Industrial Revolution Britain. It is well known that men and women usually worked in different occupations, and that women earned lower wages than men. These differences are usually attributed to custom but Joyce Burnette here demonstrates instead that gender differences in occupations and wages were instead largely driven by market forces. Her findings reveal that rather than harming women competition actually helped them by eroding the power that male workers needed to restrict female employment and minimising the gender wage gap by sorting women into the least strength-intensive occupations. Where the strength requirements of an occupation made women less productive than men, occupational segregation maximised both economic efficiency and female incomes. She shows that women's wages were then market wages rather than customary and the gender wage gap resulted from actual differences in productivity.

It was the first large industrial site in west Cheshire and introduced the area’s earliest steam engine.
Book Synopsis Intelligent Town by : Louise Miskell
Download or read book Intelligent Town written by Louise Miskell and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length study of Swansea’s urban development from the late eighteenth to the late nineteenth century. It tells the little known story of how Swansea gained an unrivalled position of influence as an urban centre, which led it briefly to claim to be the ‘metropolis of Wales’, and how it then lost this status in the face of rapid urban development elsewhere in Wales. As such it provides an important new perspective on Welsh urban history in which the role of Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil and even Bristol are better known as towns of influence in Welsh urban life. It also offers an analysis of how Swansea’s experience of urbanisation fits into the wider picture of British urban history.

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Spatial History written by Ian Gregory and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Spatial History explores the full range of ways in which GIS can be used to study the past, considering key questions such as what types of new knowledge can be developed solely as a consequence of using GIS and how effective GIS can be for different types of research. Global in scope and covering a broad range of subjects, the chapters in this volume discuss ways of turning sources into a GIS database, methods of analysing these databases, methods of visualising the results of the analyses, and approaches to interpreting analyses and visualisations. Chapter authors draw from a diverse collection of case studies from around the world, covering topics from state power in imperial China to the urban property market in nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro, health and society in twentieth-century Britain and the demographic impact of the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. Critically evaluating both the strengths and limitations of GIS and illustrated with over two hundred maps and figures, this volume is an essential resource for all students and scholars interested in the use of GIS and spatial analysis as a method of historical research.
