Book Synopsis The Authentic History of Cincinnati Chili by : Dann Woellert
Download or read book The Authentic History of Cincinnati Chili written by Dann Woellert and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover how the Ohio city’s unique dish came to be, how it gave way to legions of chili parlors, and how it become a million-dollar industry. Cincinnati is certainly judged by its chili. Some claim it’s not even chili, but those are just fighting words to natives who have developed the crave. Cincinnati is a long way from El Paso, and our chili is not Tex-Mex style. It is a unique blend typically served as a three-way: over spaghetti and covered in shredded cheddar cheese. From its 1922 roots with the Slavic-Macedonian immigrant brothers Kiradjieff in a burlesque theater, Cincinnati chili has become a million-dollar industry supporting 250 chili parlors. Many chili parlors have come and gone, but a few familiar names remain: Dixie, Camp Washington, Gold Star, Price Hill and Skyline. This is their amazing chili story.

Book Synopsis Celluloid Skyline by : James Sanders
Download or read book Celluloid Skyline written by James Sanders and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tale of two cities, both called 'New York'. The first is a real city, an urban agglomeration of millions. The second is a mythic city, so rich in memory and association and sense of place that to people everywhere it has come to seem real: the New York of films such as 42nd Street, Rear Window, King Kong, Dead End, The Naked City, Ghostbusters, Annie Hall, Taxi Driver, and Do the Right Thing. The dream city of the movies - created by more than a century of films, since the very dawn of the medium itself - may hold the secret to the glamour of its real counterpart. Here are the cocktail parties and power lunches, the subway chases and opening nights, the playground rumbles and observation-deck romances. Here is an invented Gotham, a place designed specifically for action, drama, and adventure, a city of bright avenues and mysterious sidestreets, of soaring towers and intimate corners, where remarkable people do exciting, amusing, romantic, scary things. Sanders takes the reader from the tenement to the penthouse, from New York to Hollywood and back again, from 1896 to the present, all the while showing how the real and mythic cities reflected, changed, and taught each other.

Book Synopsis Personal Souths by : Douglas B. Chambers
Download or read book Personal Souths written by Douglas B. Chambers and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal Souths, a collection of twenty interviews with famous southern writers, will mark the fiftieth anniversary of The Southern Quarterly, one of the oldest scholarly journals (founded in 1962) dedicated to southern studies. The figures interviewed range from Erskine Caldwell, Eudora Welty and Tennessee Williams (all from the 1970s), to a virtual Who's Who of southern literature in the second half of the twentieth century. All of these interviews were originally published in the journal in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s and are collected here for the first time. The South is represented broadly, with writers from eight states; at least four represent the “mountain South” (Donald Harrington, Bobbie Ann Mason, Robert Morgan, Lee Smith), while another four typify a “cosmopolitan South” (Reynolds Price, Mary Lee Settle, Elizabeth Spencer, Tennessee Williams). The greatest number of voices, at least eight of the authors, speak for or from the “poor white South” (Larry Brown, Erskine Caldwell, Harry Crews, Donald Harrington, Bobbie Ann Mason, Robert Morgan, Del Shores, Lee Smith). Though there is only one African American writer, Ernest J. Gaines, another interview (William Styron, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Confessions of Nat Turner) also focuses on a conversation about African American literature. The interviews are all fascinating. Not only do they reveal the personalities of these southern literary stars, but they also represent a self-conscious community of writers. It is a testament to the quality of The Southern Quarterly that many of these writers, when discussing their most important contemporaries, often refer to other writers whose interviews are also in this collection. These firsthand discussions will continue to illuminate and inform our understanding of their creative work.
Book Synopsis Port Cities in Asia and Europe by : Arndt Graf
Download or read book Port Cities in Asia and Europe written by Arndt Graf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-11-20 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the demise of European socialist economies and the marketization of Asian communist countries, a new global capitalism has reshaped the configuration of the world economy, with speed a determining factor to all transactions of information, finance, goods and services and people. Sea-ports that were significant for a slower but no less global economy have been undergoing transformation to stay economically and culturally relevant. Some manage to reinvent themselves as tourist cities, some face decline if they do not manage to transform. This volume looks at a number of port cities in Asia and Europe that face this pressure. With contributions considering history, contemporary developments, contacts between ports, the representation of ports and the relations between port cities and their hinterlands. This comparative study identifies many parallels between local histories and developments in the Asian and European port cities, as well as new opportunities for sharing experiences and learning from the developments and decisions in similar situations in other port cities.
