Thanks to the topical index on page 7, you can zip right to the script that fits your meeting. - TV Takeoffs . . . In a TV world of talk shows and sitcoms, sketches based on TV shows always kick off lively discussions. Since all these scripts are also humorous, they're great as openers at camps and conferences, too. - Monologues . . . Does your youth group's dramatic talent reside in only one or two students? Or do you want to raise interest in starting a drama ministry? A monologue is your ticket -- one-person scripts that require little or no costumes or props, yet can be as powerful as a three-act play. - To the Tune of CCM (And More) . . . Take the music many of your students listen to, and use it for dramatic purposes! These scripts each use a song by a Christian artist (or a song whose lyrics encourage or challenge Christians).

Book excerpt: Recent Praise for Bag Of Knives - A Novel A novel in which readers who are also musicians will find much to love , February 11, 2009 By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - This review is from: Bag of Knives (Paperback) Rock and Roll is the work of the devil some preachers say, but how far are some willing to go past just talking? "Bag of Knives" follows two people who live for the music, Skits and Eddie. Shut out of their dream careers by some musicians union they have never heard of before, they begin to lay the blame on a televangelist by the name of Billy Paladin. With the love of their lives on the line, the two begin to see what they can do against a holy man who is more than hot air. "Bag of Knives" is a novel in which readers who are also musicians will find much to love. --------- Bag Of Knives is a mystery about two young men, Skits and Eddie, who grew up together in Chicago, IL. They met at Ginos Guitar Shop as boys, became friends and formed a band called Bag Of Knives. But due to some bad circumstances as they grew in to adulthood, Bag Of Knives was their only source of income. Gino Vincent, the owner of the shop, had taken the boys under his wing and groomed them in to the professionals they became. They played the area extensively and gained a great deal of popularity until they became the top drawing act in the Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin music circuits, and were even opening concerts for touring national acts. One night at a packed venue in Milwaukee, they were approached by two men in trench coats from the musicians union. When the band couldnt produce union cards, they were shut down and put out of business. The band split up and Skits and Eddie found themselves unemployed, evicted and homeless. They decide to call on Gino for help. He had helped them before, surely he would help again. Without money or transportation, they decided to walk to Ginos Guitar Shop, which was located on the opposite corner of the city from where they were. On the third day of their walk in the freezing Chicago winter, they stumbled across Irmas Soup Kitchen. Irma sensed they were not typical homeless people, so she took them in and nursed them back to health. While helping out in the soup kitchen, they began hearing rumors that other bands had suffered the same fate as they had and then they heard two women talking about a television evangelist named Billy Paladin, a man who was on a quest to abolish rock and roll. They blew it off as some crackpot scheme until they finally got to Ginos Guitar Shop only to learn that Gino was somehow involved with this man, Billy Paladin. Since Gino ran the biggest guitar shop in the Midwest and catered to rock and roll musicians, this connection made no sense. Skits took it upon himself to solve the mystery of this connection of Gino and Billy Paladin as well as the other band robberies. In the end, as it has throughout history, good triumphs over evil or does it?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of my childhood questions about myself as I wondered how did I appear to be myself suddenly with hardly any past recollection and I wondered about my understanding of my own experiences in my life and things of that nature. I wanted to look beyond the 'Creator's wish' part, a prevalent mode of resignation of the thought process, to find a logical and scientific explanation by myself through reading. Eventually I developed the wisdom that the answer lies in the understanding of the brain. When I realized that it is my brain that is somehow generating all my experiences for me, it led to a pretty engrossing experience trying to understand it since. Since this is a book about the brain, I thought it was necessary to discuss the fundamental aspect of its structure. However, I only laid a gross picture with broad strokes only after briefly discussing the highlights of the history of evolution of the brain. Then I tried to address some of the big questions like the consciousness and the generation of the mind and self from a neurological point of view. I went ahead and discussed the mechanism of some of the attributes of self as well. Some of the functional aspects are elucidated as how we fall in love or how we navigate directions and so forth. Computation is the basis by which the brain derives its conclusions. The plasticity of the brain enables us to learn new skills. The genetic aspect cannot be overemphasized. I have included some fascinating data that has recently been found out in these regards. Psychiatric illnesses always fascinated me. I have discussed the genetic basis and pathophysiology of a few of them, like Depression, Alzheimer's disease, etc. The whole book is written on the basis of the latest findings by dedicated professionals. Here I am like a collector who has put all this in a concise deliberation to share my own understandings regarding what it takes for each of us to be the way we are.

Book excerpt: This forward-thinking reference spotlights an expansive and inclusive community model for youth alcohol prevention as opposed to traditional individual and school-based group approaches. Focusing on a long-term intervention in a Southwestern border town, it documents the development of critical consciousness in an affected community, and emphasizes young people as crucial drivers of change in their environment. The book’s Community Readiness Model provides vital context for successful coalition building between youth, families, and community entities (e.g., schools, civic leaders, police) in reducing alcohol risk factors and promoting healthier choices. Given the severity and prevalence of youth alcohol use, this case study offers a viable blueprint for large-scale engagement in prevention. Among the featured topics: Integrating research into prevention strategies using participatory action research. Breaking down silos between community-based organizations: coalition development. Adult perspectives on nurturing youth leadership and coalition participation. Youth perspectives on youth power as the source of community dev elopment. Coalition as conclusion: tips on creating a functioning coalition. Community transformational resilience for adolescent alcohol prevention. Youth-Community Partnerships for Adolescent Alcohol Prevention is both practical and inspiring reading for researchers and other mental health professionals in psychology, social work, and public health who work with adolescents, communities, and civic engagement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1915 to one of New England’s elite wealthy families, Isabella Gardner was expected to follow a certain path in life—one that would take her from marriageable debutante to proper society lady. But that plan was derailed when at age eighteen, Isabella caused a drunk-driving accident. Her family, to shield her from disgrace, sent her to Europe for acting studies, not foreseeing how life abroad would fan the romantic longings and artistic impulses that would define the rest of Isabella’s years. In Not at All What One Is Used To, author Marian Janssen tells the story of this passionate, troubled woman, whose career as a poet was in constant compromise with her wayward love life and her impulsive and reckless character. Life took Gardner from the theater world of the 1930s and ’40s to the poetry scene of the ’50s and ’60s to the wild, bohemian art life of New York’s Hotel Chelsea in the ’70s. She often followed where romance, rather than career, led her. At nineteen, she had an affair with a future president of Ireland, then married and divorced three famous American husbands in succession. Turning from acting to poetry, Gardner became associate editor of Chicago’s Poetry magazine and earned success with her best-received collection, Birthdays from the Ocean, in 1955. Soon after, her life took a turn when she met the southern poet Allen Tate. He was married to Caroline Gordon but left her to wed Gardner, who moved to Minneapolis and gave up writing to please him, but after a few short years, Tate fell for a young nun and abandoned her. In the liveliest of places at the right times, Gardner associated with many of the most significant cultural figures of her age, including her cousin Robert Lowell, T.S. Eliot, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Virgil Thomson, Tennessee Williams, and Robert Penn Warren. But famous connections could never save Isabella from herself. Having abandoned her work, she suffered through alcoholism, endured more failed relationships, and watched the lives of her children unravel fatally. Toward the end of her life, though, she took her pen back up for the poems in her final volume. Redeemed by her writing, Gardner died alone in 1981, just after being named the first poet laureate of New York State. Through interviews with many Gardner intimates and extensive archival research, author Marian Janssen delves deep into the life of a woman whose poetry, according to one friend, “probably saved her sanity.” Much more than a biography, Not at All What One Is Used To is the story of a woman whose tumultuous life was emblematic of the cultural unrest at the height of the twentieth century.
