Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise Biographical Sketch of William Penn But He who watches over the workmanship of his hand, and seeks to save that which is lost, was not leaving William Penn to wander in the paths of folly, without the reproofs of instruction, and in mercy, by his witness in the heart, inclining him to accept those reproofs as the way to life; and it was not long before he was brought to a stand, and made to feel that he must then make his election between the life of a votary of this world and that of a self-denying disciple of a crucified Saviour. He was the son of Sir William Penn, an admiral in the British navy. Of his early life but few particulars are recorded. When quite young he was placed at school in the country, where, before he was twelve years of age, his mind was the subject of religious impressions although at the time he was ignorant of their source, he was afterwards made sensible that it was the Lord's Holy Spirit that had thus early visited him. After attaining his twelfth year, he returned to London, where he prosecuted his studies, under the direction of a private tutor, for about three years. During this period his mind was often drawn into seriousness and although his quick and lively disposition, and the many temptations to which he was exposed, sometimes led him astray, yet he was mercifully preserved from many of the snares into which the young and inexperienced too often fall. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Penn: With a Sketch of Early History of Pennsylvania The following Memoir is chiefly taken from eu anonymous work published in London se tyeral years since. For the alterations and additions made by myself, 1 have relied prin cipaflly on the authority of Graham and Proud. The Sketch of the early histoiiy or penn sylvania, is part of a work commenced some years since for the use of schools, but never completed. I thought that it would make an appropriate introduction to the life of the great Founder of Pennsylvania, as it furnishes the reader with the leading facts in the history of the State antecedent to the arrival of Penn; and brings the narrative down to the period of that important and auspicious event. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Certain Black-Letter Days in the Life of William Penn IN dwelling upon the Colonial history of Pennsylvania, the mind's vision covers a radius of practically a century, or, from the time certain of the early colonists in West New Jersey gravitated across the Delaware into what is now Bucks county, say, in 1677 or 1678, until the Declaration of Independence, in 1776. It was an eventful, formative period, and many notable characters appeared upon the public stage, from time to time, as dominating factors in the scheme of evolutionary development. Chief among these, however, stands out conspicuously the forerunner of them all, the great governmental path finder, except for whose foresight, zeal, and determination there would have been no subsequent history to narrate. It has occurred to me to present, not a perfunctory bio graphical sketch of William Penn, but certain of the more notable incidents in his career, particularly those phases of his life which had a more or less direct bearing upon, or were largely influenced by, his identification with the common wealth founded by him. For reasons of my own I shall give my paper this some what uninviting title: Certain black-letter Events in the Life of William Penn. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketch of William Penn: The Founder of Pennsylvania The great men of every nation, whether sages, warriors, lawgivers, artists, or authors, may be regarded as the landmarks of its history. Their characters are among its invaluable treasures; and as they pass away, each furnishing his contribution to the universal fund of moral and intellectual wealth, they enlarge the circle of benefactions to mankind by leaving imperishable examples of virtue. For the rich legacy of their fame, surviving generations, in bestowing the meed of praise which is due, but magnify their own possessions. To commemorate and defend their memory, is the interest, as well as the duty, of those who come after them. Of all the titles to veneration of the great and good, who are distinguished in the world's annals as national benefactors, none, in my judgment, is so lofty and honorable, (next to that of the Father of his country, ) as in the phrase of Lord Bacon, the conditor imperiorum, the Founder of a State. No other is so identified with the glory of his country, even when his personal history is involved in myth and fable, like that of Romulus, the Founder of Rome, or Lycurgus, of Lacedaemon. In modern history, the title has been, it may be said, exclusively bestowed upon the subject of this sketch, the illustrious William Penn. In the origin of every political society, there have been some one or more prominent men, whose preeminence is conceded. So in the settlement of the provinces that now compose this great confederated Union; in all of which, it were easy to point out the leading spirits of the respective communities, who gave them their form and pressure, and shaped their special destiny. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of William Penn My hope was that Macaulay would in time with draw his charges as disproved. I had some rea son for this hope. His mind was racked by doubts. And he was often busy with this portion of his book. It is within my knowledge that his latest thoughts on earth were given to Penn and that which he had said of Penn. Some part of what he might have done, the world can guess from what he did. He ceased the work of ca] umny. In what he wrote after 1857, there is not a single sneer at Penn. His indexes were greatly changed. He struck out much that was false, and more that was abusive. Penn's Jacobitism was no longer 'scandalous, ' his word was no longer a 'falsehood.' Penn was no longer charged with 'treasonable conduct, ' with flight to France.' and with 'renewing his plots.' What else Macau lay might have done can only be surmised; but it is fair to think that changes in his index would have been followed by amendments in his text. I know that he was far from satisfied with his 'notes' of 1857, and that he was engaged in re considering the defence oi Penn when he leaned back in his chair and died.
