Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Russian Life in the Caucasus This is self-evident, and for many reasons most natural, when we consider the immense distance of the nearest frontier of the Russias; the expense, and the prevailing opinion, as to tho inhospitable nature of the climate - the summers of which, in reality, vie in brilliancy and intensity of temperature with those of the most southern countries. The language itself too, is a great obstacle to national intercourse: its sound, construction, pronunciation, grammar - its very alphabet the very character in which it is written, have scarcely any affinity with those things to which strangers have been accustomed. The Russians are also essentially an exclusive people, and the passport system is of the severest kind. Thus it is that Russia is the last country for the wanderer, the fortune-seeker, or the adventurer. Hence but few foreigners travel in Russia, and few Russian subjects quit their own confines. It is only the elite who find their way to the capitals of Western Europe - and they are of all classes the least communicative. This, then, is Russia's position with regard to the world at large, and foreigners will not visit that country and judge for themselves. No wonder, then, that they remain in a fog of prejudices and false impressions; thinking little about the matter, and knowing less. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Russian Life: Before and During the Emancipation of the SerfsThe author of this book, hurt in a railway accident when paying a short visit to England a few years ago, became a patient of the able surgeon and warm hearted gentleman to whom he desires gratefully to dedicate his volume. That surgeon, an old friend of mine, presently afterwards wrote to me that he had met with a gen tleman who knew more than most travellers of Rus sian Life; not only because he had lived long in Russia, and in its remoter parts as much as in the capital, but chiefly because he knew how to observe and seize at once the point of any character or inci dent. He had been persuaded to jot down some of his experiences, and here they were; surely, my friend thought, genuine enough to be worth public attention.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Sketches, Chiefly of Peasant Life No Russian who loves the literature of his country can hear that one or other of its masterpieces has been translated into German, or French, or English without mingled feelings of' pleasure and anxiety - pleasure that the treasures of that literature should be opened to a foreign nation anxiety lest they should be presented to it in a dress unworthy of their beauties; for how difficult it is to render into any language, whether of Latin or Teutonic origin, the power, the pathos, the striking illustrations, the quaint humour, above all the delicate lights and shades which give the Russian literature its unique charm. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Russian Comedy of Errors: With Other Stories and Sketches of Russian Life The young Russian Jew, Leon Khairanski, was in trouble. When the "underground" office of his revolutionary newspaper, The Free Word, was discovered and raided by the St. Petersburg police, in June, 1879, he happened, by a fortunate chance, to be absent, and so escaped arrest; but he was forced to go into hiding, and after living a precarious existence, for two weeks or more, in the houses of his friends, changing his sleeping quarters almost every night, he determined to seek safety abroad. Getting out of Russia, however, is sometimes quite as difficult as getting in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Life: In Town and Country Russian life, the only phase of the national existence that the ordinary visitor ever sees, whether on business or pleasure bent, is the outgrt of the reforms instituted by Peter the Great, and copied from much that we are familiar with in Western Europe. The modern development of Russia has, it is true, grown with wonderful rapidity of late years, but it is almost entirely confined to the towns and the regions easily accessible by the railway. New railways are constantly being laid down, but Russia covers so vast an area that a glance at the map will sufi'ice to show how large a pro portion of the country must remain for many years outside their influence. Less than twelve per cent. Of the nation reside in towns, not eight per cent. Near enough to urban centres to be influenced by town life, while the remaining eighty per cent., people of every rank of life from nobles to peasants, dwell in regions that modern life and thought have as yet hardly touched to any appreciable extent. "Tell me the first," he rejoined gaily, "and I will guess the other." "Well, then, commence," said I, fixing my eyes on the ceiling, wlule smiling inwardly at the originality of the arrangement. "You wish to obtain information from me as regards some of the company whe have lately arrived at the mineral waters, and I have already guessed, moreover, the particular individual whe causes your present pro-occupation, for inquiries about you have already been set on foot." "Doctor! doctor! it is absolutely unnecessary for us to speak, for it seems wo can read the heart of each other by a kind of electric duality." "Now for the other; it is your turn," continued the man of medicine, good-humouredly. "Well," said I, frankly, "I wished you to take the initiative for several reasons. Firstly, because listening is far less fatiguing; secondly, silence is the safest way of not committing oneself; thirdly, by hearing everything and saying nothing, one might obtain unexpected and unsought-for information that might be very weleome; and fourthly, because men of talent, like yourself, generally prefer auditors to speakers. But, now, let us come to the point at once. What did this same old Princess Ohetnikoff say to that celebrated physician, Doctor Wild, about that eccentric fellow, Zadonskoi?" "Are you so suro that it was the mother, and not the daughter 1" "Perfectly convinced." "How so?" "Because the younger princess spoke to you about Frantovskoi." "You arc certainly gifted with a very respectable amount of penetration," answered the physician. "The young princess observed to me, that she was of opinion that this young fellow, whe wears his grey cloak like the toga of the conscript fathers, has been reduced to his present grade for some...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Life to-Day Y first inclination, when the entirely unex pected proposal of the Publishers came to me to write this book, was immediately to decline. There are so many well-known writers on Russia, whose books are an unfailing pleasure and source of information, that it seemed to me to be nothing less than presumption to add to their number. But when I was assured that there seems to be a great desire just now for a book which, as the Publishers expressed it, should not attempt an elaborate sketch of the country, nor any detailed description of its system of government and administration, or any exhaustive study of the Russian Church, and yet should give the impressions of a sympathetic observer of some of the chief aspects of Russian Life which are likely to appeal to an English Churchman, I felt that I might venture to attempt it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russians at Home and the Russians Abroad, Vol. 1: Sketches, Unpolitical and Political, of Russian Life Under Alexander II A long preface is sometimes a worse evil than even a big book and the two volumes now offered to the public form a work of rather formidable dimensions. The author has nothing to say about them except that the first volume is Wholly unpolitical, and that it consists for the most part of chapters selected, and in many cases abridged, from a book published not many years after the accession of the Emperor Alexander II., under the title of the Russians at Home While.
