Book excerpt: "How to Draw Cool Stuff: Basics, Shading, Texture, Pattern and Optical Illusions" is the second book in the How to Draw Cool Stuff series. Inside you will find simple illustrations that cover the necessities of drawing cool stuff. Specific exercises are provided that offer step-by-step guidelines for drawing a variety of subjects. Each lesson starts with an easy-to-draw shape that will become the basic structure of the drawing. From there, each step adds elements to that structure, allowing the artist to build on their creation and make a more detailed image. Starting with the basic forms, the artist is provided a guide to help see objects in terms of simplified shapes. Instructions for shading to add depth, contrast, character and movement to a drawing are then covered. The varieties of texture and pattern that can be included in an artwork offer another layer of interest and depth to a design. These elements are necessary to indicate the way something looks like it feels in a work (texture) or creating the repetition of shapes, lines or colors (patterns). Illustrated optical illusions involve images that are sensed and perceived to be different from what they really are, showing examples of how the mind and the eyes can play tricks on each other. All you need is a piece of paper, a pencil and an eraser and you are ready to draw cool stuff. Once the drawing is complete, it can be colored, shaded or designed in any way you like to make it original. Following these exercises is a great way to practice your craft and begin seeing things in terms of simple shapes within a complex object.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring hundreds of carefully hand-crafted illustrations by the internationally renowned production designer Hans Bacher, Sketchbook - Composition Studies for Film is a unique journey through the mind and creative process of one of the artistic legends in animation film design. Having shaped such films as The Lion King, Mulan and Beauty and the Beast to name a few, Hans's work is a part of the very cultural fabric of our age. Here the artist puts on display the rarely discussed first part of image making for film, the conceptual thumbnail. Exquisitely beautiful in themselves, these small illustrations represent the birth of what eventually becomes the iconic images we experience on the silver screen. Essential to anyone interested in understanding the skeletal structure that exists underneath stunning imagery in all forms of media, this book is especially relevant today with the dramatic increase of interest in film and game design. Although students today have ready access to and an understanding of technical aspects of the craft using associated software, the area most lacking in accessible information is this quintessential first part of thumb-nailing an image. This unique book will provide the student and professional with the fundamentals of conceptualizing images, and how these can be used in composition in the related fields of illustration, graphic novels, 2D animation, 3D animation, photography and cinematography.

Book excerpt: For centuries artists and designers have recorded places, people, and life in travel sketchbooks. Over a period of fifty years, Laurie Olin, one of America's most distinguished landscape architects, has recorded aspects of France: its cities and countryside, streets and cafes, ancient ruins, vineyards, and parks--from humble to grand, things that interested his designer's eye--taking the time to see things carefully. Paris in its seasons, agriculture in Provence and Bordeaux, trees, dogs, and fountains, all are noted over the years in watercolor or pen and ink. Originally intended for the pleasure of merely being there as well as self-education, this personal selection from his many sketchbooks is accompanied by transcriptions of notes and observations, along with introductory remarks for the different regions included: Paris, Haute Loire, Provence, Haute Provence, Normandy, Aquitaine, and Entre des Meures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A richly illustrated look at how travel influenced the work of renowned contemporary artist Betye Saar Betye Saar (b. 1926) is an artist whose assemblages tell visual stories and convey powerful political messages. A leading figure of the Black Arts Movement in the 1970s, she works with found objects—many of which she gathers on her extensive travels—to explore themes like symbolic mysticism, feminism, racism, and Eurocentric chauvinism. Betye Saar: Heart of a Wanderer sheds new light on Saar’s unique creative process, her trips around the world, and the diverse ways in which her artworks engage with global histories of travel and forced migration. It presents how the artist’s work conjures the transporting experience of a voyage to a faraway place. This beautifully illustrated book draws on original, in-depth interviews with Saar and the companions who accompanied the artist in her travels across four continents over several decades. Essays by leading scholars contextualize Saar’s journeys within her broader life and career, as well as how her practice fits into broader traditions—such as scrapbooking—in African American visual culture. In addition to providing this context, this book explores how Saar’s assemblage practice both echoes and provides a critical counterpoint to the collecting practices of Gilded Age American art collectors like Isabella Stewart Gardner. Featuring a wealth of previously unpublished material—including almost thirty travel sketchbooks and two dozen finished assemblages—Betye Saar: Heart of a Wanderer provides a fresh look at a groundbreaking American artist while offering a timely social history of the impact of travel on the African American experience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bibliographical presentation of all the works of Arnold Schoenberg. What Kochel and Einstein did for Mozart, this author has done for Schoenberg. He has had access to Schoenberg's papers and scrupulously catalogued the legacy of the composer who has been described as the father of the new music of the twentieth century. Schoenberg's published and unpublished works, his editions and arrangements, his sketches and drafts, are meticulously documented in chronological sequence within clearly defined groups. In many cases, we can trace the composition of a work from its first stages to its ultimate shape. Letters in which Schoenberg himself has things to say about a particular work form part of the author's text. Thu the voice of the composer is heard throughout the book. Schoenberg was a many-sided artist and the author has not neglected to list his literary works, his many books and articles, and his remarkable paintings. For the student of Schoenberg, this book is an indispensable source of information. But its appeal is also much wider. From so fully illustrated a catalogue of works, there emerges an amazingly faithful portrait of the man and his music. As one moves from one historic composition to another - Pierrot lunaire, the five orchestral pieces, Moses and Aaron, a vivid impression is given of history in the making.

Book excerpt: Turner, painter of great seascapes, looked a bit like a sailor; he called himself "Admiral Booth" among friends; he did virtuoso improvisations at the Royal Academy; he was frequently stung by critics, like the reviewer who accused him of painting with "soapsuds and whitewash." Wilton, curator of London's Tate Gallery, has assembled the known facts of Turner's life, interweaving passages from the artist's letters and notes, reviews and comments by contemporaries. Besides offering candid glimpses of an intensely private genius, this sumptuously illustrated study is especially valuable in briging to light little-known phases of his prolific, endlessly inventive career. Here are astonishing color experiments made on the Moselle River, huge monochrome pencil drawings, picturesque scenes of life on the road, brooding oils of architectural interiors, remarkable watercolors on blue paper, romantic mezzotints and a host of other marvels.
