Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of the Philosophy of American Literature The following outline is an attempt to prove the independent and organic development of American literature. The author has often heard persons otherwise well-informed speak apologetically, even contemptuously, of their country's literature, as a mere pallid reflection of literary fashions beyond the Atlantic. Were it such, there could be no more telling criticism of American intellect; no clearer proof could be afforded of a supposed degeneracy of the race when transplanted to American soil, and of the worthlessness of our civilization; for literature is an index of the worth of nations. But the apology is unnecessary, the sneer ignorant; the statement is not true and never has been. Bradford and Hooker, Edwards and Franklin, Channing, Emerson, and Hawthorne, Webster, Prescott, and Motley, were not intellectual parasites. It is easy to explain the origin of this misconception. The failure of the Protectorate put an end to the Puritan ideal in England, and in sharpest contrast with it were the habits of thought introduced by the restoration of the House of Stuart, - habits of late and gradual growth in New England, hardly perceptible, indeed, by the keenest scrutiny before the beginning of the eighteenth century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work treats of several aspects of American philosophy in their historical perspective. The author has interpreted philosophically the revolutionary changes that recent years have brought in the domain of education, church, politics, natural sciences etc. The reader will find herein that American Philosophy is the outgrowth of impacts of new life and new directions imported by waves of immigration. More conspicuous are the recent intellectual imports from Cambridge, Paris and Vienna. The philosophical analysis that grew up in Cambridge under the leadership of Whitehead, russel and Moore, the sophisticated, modernized versions of Catholic scholasticism from Paris and the the schools of value theory, existentialism, phenomenology, logical positivism, psychoanalysis, and socialism from Vienna--these are now pervasive forces in American culture. The author has ventured to predict that the types of philosophical thought described in this volume are being radically revised, reviewed and reconstructed because of these new importations that a decidedly new chapter in American philosophy is being written. The author has tried well to expound what American history teaches or what American philosophy stands for.
Book Synopsis Confucianism and American Philosophy by : Mathew A. Foust
Download or read book Confucianism and American Philosophy written by Mathew A. Foust and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparative analysis of Confucianism and the American Transcendentalist and Pragmatist traditions. In this highly original work, Mathew A. Foust breaks new ground in comparative studies through his exploration of the connections between Confucianism and the American Transcendentalist and Pragmatist movements. In his examination of a broad range of philosophers, including Confucius, Mencius, Xunzi, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Charles Peirce, William James, and Josiah Royce, Foust traces direct lines of influence from early translations of Confucian texts and brings to light conceptual affinities that have been previously overlooked. Combining resources from both traditions, Confucianism and American Philosophy offers fresh insights into contemporary problems and exemplifies the potential of cross-cultural dialogue in an increasingly pluralistic world. Authoritative and insightful, this book fills two lacunae in East-West comparative studies. First, it rounds out several general thematic connections by taking a broad view, rather than focusing narrowly on just one figure from each tradition. And, in so doing, it sheds much needed light on Confucian comparisons that have been previously understated or completely unnoticed. Christopher C. Kirby, editor of Dewey and the Ancients: Essays on Hellenic and Hellenistic Themes in the Philosophy of John Dewey
