Download or read book Readicide written by Kelly Gallagher and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read-i-cide: The systematic killing of the love of reading, often exacerbated by the inane, mind-numbing practices found in schools. Reading is dying in our schools. Educators are familiar with many of the factors that have contributed to the decline, poverty, second-language issues, and the ever-expanding choices of electronic entertainment. In this provocative book Readicide: How Schools are Killing Reading and What You Can Do About It , author and teacher Kelly Gallagher suggests it is time to recognize a new and significant contributor to the death of reading: our schools. Readicide , Gallagher argues that American schools are actively (though unwittingly) furthering the decline of reading. Specifically, he contends that the standard instructional practices used in most schools are killing reading by:Valuing standardized testing over the development of lifelong readersMandating breadth over depth in instructionRequiring students to read difficult texts without proper instructional support and insisting students focus on academic textsIgnoring the importance of developing recreational readingLosing sight of authentic instruction in the looming shadow of political pressuresReadicide provides teachers, literacy coaches, and administrators with specific steps to reverse the downward spiral in reading-;steps that will help prevent the loss of another generation of readers.

Download or read book Harry Berry written by Barbara R. Wright and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002-12-18 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is based on the fact that the Bible is the Word of God, without error or contradiction, and acceptance of the fact that the historical progression of the seven letters to the Churches, and the seven parables on the Kingdom of Heaven are related to the seven periods of the Church Age. Each Age reflects the historical social, political, moral, and religious conditions of that period. Topics discussed in this work includes: the Tribulation Period, the abomination that causes desolation, the number 666 as a human social system, the Battle of Armageddon, the two Witnesses, and the "place" prepared for the two women in Revelation chapter twelve. The Battle of Armageddon enabled the Jewish people to return to Palestine and bring an end to the desolation period. A turning point in the study came when it was discovered that the end of the desolation period; the end of Daniel's 1,290 years; and the end of the protection of the two "women" in the "place" God prepared for them, all occurred in the year AD 1970. The year 1970 marks the beginning of "The Time of the End." It is interesting to note that the revealing of "the man of sin" resulted in social upheavals of the past thirty years; the rise in terrorism; global warming; and the melting of ice caps around the world. Scientists and others have documented events related to "The Time of the End" which will culminate with a great catastrophe when the seventh trumpet is blown on the "great and terrible Day of the wrath of God." Several passages in the Bible describe the eruption of volcanoes. It's time to wake up because our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. In order to understand what global warming it all about we need to consider the biblical account of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19:15-29. Because of gross homosexual behavior, God sent two angels to get Lot and his family out of the city. One thing to consider is that the timing of the destruction of the cities, was under the control of the angels. The cities were destroyed by fire and brimstone (sulfur) coming down from the sky. But Abraham saw smoke coming up from the countryside "as the smoke of a furnace." Evidently Abraham's attention was attracted by a loud noise and an earthquake. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was caused by the eruption of a volcano which left a large caldera filled with salt and the Dead Sea. In Luke 17:29-30 Jesus warned that when he returns the same thing will take place. This time it will involve not just a city but the whole earth. The timing of this future catastrophic event is controlled just as the timing of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was controlled by the angels. (Matthew 24:36) Lot was warned by the angels to get out of the city. Today in the 21st century we are being warned by global warming and its consequences: melting of polar ice caps, melting of snow caps, rising sea levels, etc. IT'S TIME TO WAKE UP!

Download or read book Save Yourself written by Cameron Esposito and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "hilarious and honest" bestselling memoir from a rising comedy star tackles issues of gender, sexuality, feminism, and the Catholic childhood that prepared her for a career as an outspoken lesbian comedian (Abby Wambach). Cameron Esposito wanted to be a priest and ended up a stand-up comic. Now she would like to tell the whole queer as hell story. Her story. Not the sidebar to a straight person's rebirth-she doesn't give a makeover or plan a wedding or get a couple back together. This isn't a queer tragedy. She doesn't die at the end of this book, having finally decided to kiss the girl. It's the sexy, honest, bumpy, and triumphant dyke's tale her younger, wasn't-allowed-to-watch-Ellen self needed to read. Because there was a long time when she thought she wouldn't make it. Not as a comic, but as a human. SAVE YOURSELF is full of funny and insightful recollections about everything from coming out (at a Catholic college where sexual orientation wasn't in the nondiscrimination policy) to how joining the circus can help you become a better comic (so much nudity) to accepting yourself for who you are-even if you're, say, a bowl cut-sporting, bespectacled, gender-nonconforming child with an eye patch (which Cameron was). Packed with heart, humor, and cringeworthy stories anyone who has gone through puberty, fallen in love, started a career, or had period sex in Rome can relate to, Cameron's memoir is for that timid, fenced-in kid in all of us-and the fearless stand-up yearning to break free. Book Synopsis All Falling Faiths by : J. Harvie Wilkinson III
Download or read book All Falling Faiths written by J. Harvie Wilkinson III and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this warm and intimate memoir Judge Wilkinson delivers a chilling message. The 1960s inflicted enormous damage on our country; even at this very hour we see the decade’s imprint in so much of what we say and do. The chapters reveal the harm done to the true meaning of education, to our capacity for lasting personal commitments, to our respect for the rule of law, to our sense of rootedness and home, to our desire for service, to our capacity for national unity, and to our need for the sustenance of faith. Judge Wilkinson seeks not to lecture but to share, in the most personal sense, what life was like in the 1960s and to describe the influence of those frighteningly eventful years upon the present day. Judge Wilkinson acknowledges the good things accomplished by the Sixties and nourishes the belief that from that decade we can learn ways to build a better future. But he asks his own generation to recognize its youthful mistakes and pleads with future generations not to repeat them. The author’s voice is one of love and hope for America. Our national prospects depend on facing honestly the full magnitude of all we lost during one momentous decade and of all we must now recover.
