In an untamed land, far from his native Iowa, he survived illness, hardship, and lawlessness with his humor intact. Never a stranger to work, Walgamott mined, trapped, ranched, and hunted. While living with settlers, Indians, and outlaws alike, he amassed a trove of unforgettable experiences. First published in 1936, this one-volume book represents a collection of his fascinating stories, which were published in the mid-1920s. “A glowing, colorful, and interesting section of the true frontier....stories exceptionally well done, for every one of them has pith and point and is effectively told.”—The New York Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...one of the most heart-felt baseball books to come out in the last few months, written not by a journalist with nice advancement but by a simple fan who put up his own money, got it self published, and got himself heard." - Tom Hoffarth, columnist for the Los Angeles Daily News "His take on some of baseballs major events and personalities are refreshingly different from the conventional wisdom of baseball insiders." - Jeffrey Stuart, author of Twilight Teams "...the purest fan memoir Ive yet read...Lewers is...everyfan USA." - Nicholas Croston, Lit Bases website "...Lewers book reminds us why we love the game so much." - Matt ODonnell, Fenway West website "Every fan has his or her memories, but not everyone can express them as well as Lewers has." - Ron Kaplan, Ron Kaplans Baseball Bookshelf website "...Lewers is the pioneer for the personal baseball narrative." - Bill Jordan, Baseballreflections.com website "Covering a broad sweep of personal and baseball history, Lewers democratically recognizes many unsung heroes and ventures some refreshingly candid opinions." - Judy Johnson, Watching the Game website There is no shortage of books written by baseball insiders players, managers, and writers. What seems to be lacking are books by ordinary fans. Six Decades of Baseball will not put you on the field or in the dugout. Rather it will put you in the cheap seats of the upper deck where baseball can be viewed through lens of Bill Lewers. This book is not just a recitation of baseball history (although a lot of baseball history is included). Rather it is a narrative of a relationship between a fan and a game a relationship that has evolved through the years. Bill has been hooked on baseball ever since his first outing at the Polo Grounds in 1951. Not content with the three local choices offered by his native New York, Bill decided at a very early age that he would root for the Boston Red Sox. Much of what follows in this decade-by-decade narrative is a consequence of that monumental choice. The book starts in the 1950s with Bills formative years as he grew up in the awesome shadow of the New York Yankees and experienced Five oclock Lightning first hand. A healthy amount of Red Sox minutiae is presented not because these were things that Bill memorized but rather that they were the reality that he lived. Greats like Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle are remembered but also recounted are tales of the more obscure including the Red Sox Youth Movement of the early 1950s, the Never-Never-Boys, and the Fastest Man in the Majors. There is even an all too brief encounter with the Boys of Summer at Ebbets Field. As the narrative moves to the 1960s the new team in town, the New York Mets enters the picture and those special early days at the Polo Grounds are recalled. So too are visits to Bostons Fenway Park at a time when tickets were $1.50 and attendance was frequently below 10,000. All this changed with the 1967 Impossible Dream which Bill recalls from the vantage point of a New Yorker. The decade ends with a baseball adventure gone amuck and the tragic end of one of the mainstays of Bills Red Sox youth. The 1970s sees changes as Bill moves to Maryland and encounters a new home team, the highly successful Baltimore Orioles. Both Boston and Baltimore heroes are recalled as well as both the Red Sox triumph of 1975 and collapse of 1978. Much of the 1980s revolve around the Red Sox almost World Championship of 1986. A young buck achieves dominance even as an aging superstar makes his last stand. Bill also examines the managerial decision that may have cost the Red Sox the championship (its not the one you think). The 1990s sees the unveiling of an exciting new ballpark as

Gopaul tells how he went from middle-class beginnings on the island of Trinidad and living through rationing during World War II to prosperity after beginning anew in the United Kingdom, and later, in Canada. Six Decades to Wisdom . (maybe) weaves a tale about a man who lives life to the fullest. Throughout Gopaul's life, people are his directional signposts. Although they are not all smiling or gracious, their guidance comes in myriad forms to shape his education, profession, and life. Not only does he survive obstacles and prejudices, but he also learns and thrives. He makes a home in the Great White North, where he enjoys all three seasons, great friendships, and trusted colleagues. Maturity is difficult to define; wisdom is even harder still to explain. However, through his account of the times he had to move on or change direction, Gopaul illustrates these concepts with ease. Humor is Gopaul's overriding companion as he relives forty precious years of life in Six Decades to Wisdom . (maybe).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa needs fresh thinking on its leadership and governance challenges, particularly when it comes to the disconnects between traditional leadership models and governance structures within the modern state. In this open access book, Kofi Anani finds ways forward through the Blended Representation Principle (BRP), which stipulates that power be shared between leaders selected on the basis of Western-democratic ideals and leaders chosen on the basis of traditional African norms and conventions. Drawing on his research and professional experience, Anani shows how incorporating the BRP into African leadership and governance thinking would encourage more voluntary public participation in politics, guarantee transparency and accountability in decision-making, particularly when it comes to the use of public resources, and ultimately encourage more public confidence in leaders. Anani also provides concrete suggestions for how to achieve all this, not through quick fixes, but rather through educational campaigns directed at public officials and through new communities of learning and practice designed to champion the BRP in villages, schools, workplaces, places of worship, and other social organizations. This book is a must-read for all scholars and students of postcolonial governance and leadership, and it is of keen interest to anyone concerned with how Western-style state-making might ultimately find a balance with other, indigenous modes of social organization. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of my life. I am no celebrity, even though a lot of people are to their kith and kin (Am I? I wonder). I am not someone who people will or should look up to or maybe even emulate. This book is about looking back at my life, remembering the choices I have made, and their ramifications. Have these years been full of failures, or have they been foundations on which the pillar of success was or could have been built. Was the pillar finally built? Is this book an autobiography? Is it just a rambling of a person who is remembering the milestone moments of his life? Is it a series of confessions? Is it a way to pen down my life’s journey in anticipation of taking that final flight to the other world? I leave it to you to decide. All I can hope for is that you have a good time going through these pages. If I can manage to provide some topics of conversations, going beyond the confines of just my own life, about various aspects that one might be confronted with, how to conduct oneself, it would all have been worth it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive theory of why human freedom gave way to increasing oppression since the invention of states - and why this trend began to reverse itself more recently, leading to a rapid expansion of universal freedoms and democracy. Drawing on a massive body of evidence, the author tests various explanations of the rise of freedom, providing convincing support of a well-reasoned theory of emancipation. The study demonstrates multiple trends toward human empowerment, which converge to give people control over their lives. Most important among these trends is the spread of 'emancipative values', which emphasize free choice and equal opportunities. The author identifies the desire for emancipation as the origin of the human empowerment trend and shows when and why this desire grows strong; why it is the source of democracy; and how it vitalizes civil society, feeds humanitarian norms, enhances happiness, and helps redirect modern civilization toward sustainable development.
