Read about the Beaker People, blue-painted Picts and the Roman legionnaires who tried, but ultimately failed to subdue the local populace. William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Donald Trump inhabit these pages alongside tales of Bloody Harlaw, the Herschip of Buchan and the battle of Mons Graupius. Discover the painter priest of Macduff, the English Dillinger, the famous diggers of Inverurie's George Square and the strange tale of how Lawrence of Arabia 'got his scuds' over at Collieston. The Little History of Aberdeenshire is guaranteed to enthral both residents and visitors alike.

Book excerpt: I have been doing my family tree for well over thirty years; it is quite vast. It got to the stage when revising its content, I realized it was all names and dates basically, probably quite boring especially to the younger generations. Therefore I went back to the beginning and started to research individuals and their times and events, then adding them to the tree. I then found it was like reading a book and was quite interesting, with the result that I wrote a completely separate story from the tree. I then added photos that were also of interest to the content. The book starts in the mid-1600s, tracing a fishing family right up to 1947, including hardships, disasters, tragedies, WWI, and WWII. But the story can equally apply to anybody with fishing roots (just change the names). I think it is a heritage to be recorded and should not be lost.

Book excerpt: "Andrew Lownie's acclaimed biography - the first in over thirty years - reveals a character as complex and fascinating as any in his great quartet of thrillers starring master spy Richard Hannay. He succeeds in the daunting task of retelling Buchan's life in all its variety, breadth, and complexity. Based on exhaustive research and drawing on private papers previously unavailable to biographers, this is a compelling picture of Buchan's life, and a panoramic view of British political, social, and literary circles during the first half of the twentieth-century."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: John Buchan's 'The Complete Novels of John Buchan: 25+ Spy Classics, Thrillers & Adventure Novels in One Premium Edition (Unabridged)' is a compelling collection of thrilling and adventurous stories that showcase Buchan's mastery of the spy genre. With a mix of espionage, political intrigue, and daring escapades, the book provides readers with a captivating glimpse into the world of early 20th-century espionage literature. Buchan's writing style is both engaging and evocative, drawing readers into a world of danger and excitement. His attention to detail and intricate plots make each novel a page-turner that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. John Buchan, a Scottish novelist and politician, drew inspiration from his own experiences in the British intelligence services during World War I to write his spy novels. His background in politics and diplomacy lends a sense of authenticity to his stories, adding depth and complexity to the characters and plots. Buchan's keen insight into human nature and his understanding of the geopolitical landscape of his time are evident in his nuanced portrayals of spies and secret agents. I highly recommend 'The Complete Novels of John Buchan' to readers who enjoy action-packed thrillers with a historical twist. Buchan's storytelling prowess and his unique perspective on the world of espionage make this collection a must-read for fans of spy fiction and adventure novels.
