Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a full account of Siva's Dance of Bliss, which has become a popular symbol in the West for Hinduism and Eastern Mysticism. Siva is one of the two main gods of Hinduism, and his worshippers comprise half of all Hindus. Siva's Dance of Bliss is based on a remarkable Sanskrit poem written by Umapati Sivacarya, Saiva theologian and temple priest in Cidambaram, South India, in the fourteenth century. Starting with the bronze image of Nataraja, King of Dancers, thereafter the Cidambaram temple, its myth and its priests are viewed in the light of the poem. Umapati's Saiva theology is discussed in relation to his life and also in relation to Vedanta and yoga. The iconography and mythology of the Goddess and of other forms of Siva provide necessary perspective. Art from Cidambaram and neighbouring sites illuminates the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in the early twentieth century, The Dance of Shiva was a remarkable book for its time. It discussed in depth the unique nature of the Indian ethos, understood by so few in the Western world and misinterpreted by so many. A collection of fourteen lectures, these essays on Indian art and culture offer a lucid representation of the opinions and attitudes held by Indian intellectuals during the British Raj. Ranging from topics such as music during Vedic times, Indian attitudes towards family, women and love, analyses of the symbolism of Nataraja and the many-armed gods of India, to the Indian concept of beauty, The Dance of Shiva is an effervescent account of the Indian experience through the ages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-envisioning Siva Nataraja. A Multidisciplinary Perspective' offers new insights into the dancing Siva as icon and concept. Each of the seven essays in this volume addresses an aspect of the Nataraja (a specific form of the dancing Siva) that has been until now untouched by scholars, or one for which the research is here moved substantially forward. Through the use of hitherto unexplored materials - murals, prints, icons, Sanskrit iconographic and ritual texts, Tamil inscriptions, and the analysis of metal alloys and casting techniques - old views are checked and challenged, and new ideas are proposed. Combining a wide range of fields of expertise, the volume will add to our knowledge about this well-studied, but poorly understood icon.
