Waking up from cancer surgery on the morning of 9/11, the author begins his unplanned private war just as the world is forced into a new war on terrorism. In his six-month battle through multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and a multitude of tests, Warrenfeltz sees many parallels between the two wars. In a series of 23 “situation reports” he shares his thoughts and medical progress with friends around the world. During the cancer journey Warrenfeltz discovers an unexpected joy in his new life as one of “The Lucky Ones.” In his casual, clear, and amusing writing, he shares the secrets he found. Now everyone can enjoy life as much as he does—without going through the hell he went through to get there.
Book Synopsis Peacekeeper's Handbook by : Sam Stuart
Download or read book Peacekeeper's Handbook written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peacekeeper's Handbook is a ready reference for the planning and conduct of peacekeeping operations, both within the framework of the United Nations and in a regional or multinational setting. Topics covered include standing operating procedures, operational handling and techniques, logistics, and communications, along with preparation and preparedness and the role of civilian police in peacekeeping operations. Planning and procedures for medical services for international peacekeeping operations are also considered. This guidebook is comprised of 14 chapters and begins with an overview of the theoretical concept of international peacekeeping, followed by a discussion on the main organs of the United Nations, their functions in relation to international peace and security, and their powers and their responsibilities. The following chapters focus on the principles on which the policy on UN peacekeeping is based; the skill and technique requirements for the chief aspects of a peacekeeper's duties; and the organization and procedures for the logistics support of a UN operation at the level of UN Headquarters, Force Headquarters, and National Contingent. The organization and structure of the communications system within a UN Force are then described, along with the organization and procedure employed by the UN and its Forces/Missions to facilitate good public relations and an effective press information service. This text concludes by outlining the main principles and procedures in establishing a medical service. This handbook will be a valuable resource for diplomats, military officers, policymakers, academicians, students, and those interested in dispute settlement and conflict management.

Download or read book Cognitive Requirements for Information Operations Training (CRIOT) written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The advent of battlefield digitization increases the work trainers for live force-on-force exercises must do to control exercises and provide feedback to units, and it will pull trainers at platoon and company level out of the tactical information loop. The goal of this study was to describe instrumentation capabilities with the potential for reducing workloads and pulling trainers back into the information loop for exercises at the Army's maneuver combat training centers (CTCs) and at home stations. This study documents the experiences of approximately seventy of the National Training Center (NTC) observer/controllers (OCs) and analysts that participated in the training of the Army's first digitized brigade during the Force XXI Army warfighting Experiment (AWE). To gain a better understanding of what is required to support digital training, the study team reviewed emerging tactical doctrine from platoon through battalion task force level to develop a sample of potential digital training points and then designed displays that would help a trainer monitor unit performance with respect to these points. The team then defined the capabilities a workstation would need to create these displays. This report describes, defends and illustrates twenty workstation capabilities that support exercise control and feedback for digitized units."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: Volume 3 of the official history of Australian peacekeeping, humanitarian and post-cold war operations explores Australia's involvement in six overseas missions following the end of the Gulf War: Cambodia (1991–99); Western Sahara (1991–94); the former Yugoslavia (1992–2004); Iraq (1991); Maritime Interception Force operations (1991–99); and the contribution to the inspection of weapons of mass destruction facilities in Iraq (1991–99). These missions reflected the increasing complexity of peacekeeping, as it overlapped with enforcement of sanctions, weapons inspections, humanitarian aid, election monitoring and peace enforcement. Book Synopsis Political Continuity and Conflict in East Timor by : Ruth Nuttall
Download or read book Political Continuity and Conflict in East Timor written by Ruth Nuttall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-14 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history of political continuity and conflict in East Timor between 1974 and 2006, and the origins of an unexpected crisis in 2006 which caused an international military intervention and several more years of UN missions. Providing a fresh and empirical political history to explain the crisis, the book offers new dimensions to the understanding of East Timor, its independence struggles, political transition and politics after independence in 2002. The author revisits historical materials and brings to light new resources, making extensive use of the 2005 Report of the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation and contemporary diplomatic, UN and news media reports, to provide a precise context and chronology for the events in 2006. The book provides an analysis within which factors such as ethnic and inter-communal violence, security sector weaknesses and conflict between the army and police, the constitution and legal system, state-building and peace-building can be located in the larger context of the 2006 crisis. Demonstrating how and why, in the space of four weeks in April and May 2006, the newly independent country of Timor-Leste plunged from ‘UN success story’ into catastrophe, this book will be of interest to academics working on Southeast Asian Politics, Southeast Asian history, Development Studies and Nation-, State- and Peace-Building and International Relations.
