Book excerpt: A rare and interesting account of a campaign during Britain s unceasing attempts to prevent or at least deter, the fractious tribes of Afghanistan from disturbing the Raj in India. Sitana was a district which had never been entered before by British troops, and the author s account of the short but sharp campaign there is a valuable one. He recounts the Sitana campaign, also known as the Afghan Frontier War, from the perspective of an eye-witness who was present at the storming of Laloo, the capture of Umbeylah, and the destruction of Mulka. Adye was an artillery officer and a veteran of the Indian Mutiny. The book is illustrated by a fine frontispiece engraving of the Umbeylah Pass, three main maps and several sketch maps. It should be of interest to all students of the Afghan Wars and 19th century colonial wars, set as it is in a region which is still the scene of conflict.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sitana: A Mountain Campaign on the Borders of Afghanistan in 1863 Having been present towards the close of the opera tions, I am in hopes that my knowledge of the scene will have enabled me to give a clear account of the campaign, which, though short, was a very interesting one, both in its military and political aspects, and more especially as having occurred in a part of the country never before entered by British troops. Book excerpt: A small war on the burning border The North west frontier of India was always a troubled one for the British Empire. It offered perfect terrain for defence and the opposite for offensive operations and control thereafter. As is common with all mountainous regions it bred men equal to the challenges of their homeland and this typically meant fierce tribesmen disinclined to accept domination from anybody. Of course, the Raj knew well the magnitude of the problem it perennially faced. It had suffered the disaster of the First Afghan War, there had also been many outbreaks by fractious tribesmen before this confrontation as there would be many more to come. The Sitana campaign, which is also known as the Afghan Frontier War, was a short war that took place in 1865 in a district that had never suffered incursions from the British before. This narrative was written by an eyewitness, an officer of artillery, and covers the entire conflict including the actions at Laloo, Umbeylah and Mulka. Adye's book is an interesting North West Frontier account of the early post Indian Mutiny period, it provides valuable insights into why the region remains troubled even in the 21st century, as well as a view of the difficulties of undertaking a military campaign within it. Book excerpt: Since its foundation in 1747, Afghanistan has seen seemingly limitless wars waged by the central government to consolidate its control over the country as well as rampant tribal warfare. There have been three Anglo-Afghan Wars (1839-42, 1878-79 and 1919); a Russian-backed Marxist government in Kabul battled a coalition of tribal armies, which was soon followed by the Taliban takeover. Now, in the midst of a war against terrorism, the United States is backing another central government in yet another sporadic struggle. All the information currently available on the endless chain of wars stretching over two and a half centuries is traced in this book. It consists of the American involvement in Afghanistan since October 2001 as well as individual campaigns, including tactics and logistics of skirmishes, the weapons used, and biographical entries on the significant leaders involved in the battles. Extensive analysis of regional and ideological divisions within the country and the external forces that have brought around conflict in this remote, mountainous region, in addition to a chronology of the encounters, an extensive bibliography, and numerous maps and illustrations make this crucial volume indispensable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: âThe Pashtun Tribes of Afghanistan is a tour de force â combining erudite analysis, historical research, atmospheric story-telling, page-turning prose and above all, profound passion.â - Sir Nicholas Kay, NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan (2019-2020) & British Ambassador to Afghanistan (2017-2019) The abrupt withdrawal of US and NATO forces in 2021 ushered in a new era for Afghanistan. The subsequent Taliban takeover facilitated a reversion to some of the worst hallmarks of Afghanistanâs past, including bans on womenâs education and other rights-related roll-backs. Navigating this new reality necessitates that more constructive relationships are built between Westerners and Afghans, particularly with the majority ethnicity â the Pashtun tribes. The Pashtun Tribes in Afghanistan: Wolves Among Men is the toolkit for doing so. It provides the knowledge needed to navigate a complex tribal environment. Framed by first-hand experience and balancing in-depth analysis with engaging anecdotes, it sheds light on the Pashtun way of life still enshrined in the ancient âPashtunwaliâ honor code. It explains the tribal structure, tribal territories, historic battles, prominent figures and even Pashtun proverbs and poets. It also highlights how recent wars are destroying the tribal arena. Focusing on people rather than politics, this book unveils the layers, paradoxes and subtleties of the worldâs largest tribal society. On turning the final page, readers will understand the Pashtun brand of tribalism and how it influences Afghanistan today. They will be aware that tribal life has been permanently challenged but that the Pashtun identity remains intact â in psychology if not always in practice. They will recognize why Pashtuns are not a single entity and should not be treated as âoneâ. The need to understand the tribes as they understand themselves will also be clear, particularly their concept of honor. This book illuminates why, from Alexander the Great to Winston Churchill, and even with the Taliban today, Pashtuns are still stereotyped as primitive, violence-prone barbarians. But were men like Rudyard Kipling right to characterize tribesmen as being âas unaccountable as the grey Wolf, who is his blood brother?â This book has the answer.

This book was released on 1998-08-10 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive study is the first scholarly account explaining how the British and Indian armies adapted to the peculiar demands of fighting an irregular tribal opponent in the mountainous no-man's-land between India and Afghanistan. It does so by discussing how a tactical doctrine of frontier fighting was developed and 'passed on' to succeeding generations of soldiers. As this book conclusively demonstrates this form of colonial warfare always exerted a powerful influence on the organisation, equipment, training and ethos of the Army in India.
