Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1950s are arguably the watershed era in the civil rights movement with the landmark Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, and the desegregation of Little Rock (Arkansas) High School in 1957. It was during this period--1955 to be exact--that sociologist Alfred M. Lee published his seminal work Fraternities without Brotherhood: A Study of Prejudice on the American Campus. Lee's book was the first and last book to explore diversity within college fraternal groups. More than fifty years later, Craig L. Torbenson and Gregory S. Parks revisit this issue more broadly in their edited volume Brothers and Sisters: Diversity in College Fraternities and Sororities. This volume draws from a variety of disciplines in an attempt to provide a holistic analysis of diversity within collegiate fraternal life. It also brings a wide range of scholarly approaches to the inquiry of diversity within college fraternities and sororities. It explores not only from whence these groups have come but where they are currently situated and what issues arise as they progress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation In March 1929 a questionnaire was distributed among University of Missouri students to measure their attitudes toward marriage. Students were instructed to answer the questions as best they could, then drop their responses into any campus mailbox for delivery to the Bureau of Personnel Research. Rumors of Indiscretion explores how a college senior's psychology class project, a seemingly innocuous questionnaire, could cause a statewide uproar that attracted national attention. The questionnaire, quickly brought to the notice of the University of Missouri's dean of women, soon found its way into the university president's office, the local media, and even the Missouri legislature. Many people, never having read the questionnaire, were forced to rely on rumors or excerpts in the newspapers about what it actually contained. Yet, a cry arose for the expulsion of the students and professors responsible for this, as one headline labeled it, "filthy questionnaire." The controversy surrounding the questionnaire drew, lines between young and old, with the rising generation challenging the Victorian ideas of those who were frightened by this coming of age of America during the Jazz Age. Nelson brings out the historical significance of this episode by placing it into two contexts: the history of the University of Missouri and the "culture war" in America during the 1920s. He argues that the 1920s were a time of continuity as well as change in Missouri and the United States. What was actually lost was Victorianism and its mandate for an orderly culture in which each member had a sharply defined role, violations of which carried societal consequences. The youth of this time rebelled against theconstraints of such a society. Many sought change, but few were what would later be called radicals. Nelson uses the University of Missouri episode to demonstrate that while Victorianism's unrealistic notions were lost, tradition.

In Purity Reigns, Laurel Shadrach is the daughter of a preacher, the oldest and only sister of three brothers. The story takes the reader through Laurel's senior year of high school as she deals with the struggles of being a teenager. Her desire is to stay pure, but will her desire to be with her boyfriend be stronger? In Totally Free, Laurel Shadrach is in her second semester of her senior year and things seem to be falling into place. She's dating a Christian guy and her friendships are back on track. But right around the corner lurks the temptation of drugs and alcohol. As she witnesses their destruction on those around her, Laurel realizes that alcohol and drugs only bring temporary relief. To be totally free, you must turn your life over to Christ and rest in Him. In Equally Yoked, Laurel Shadrach is off to college in Georgia. There she meets Payton Skky, one of her new suitemates. As she struggles to adjust to the pressures of college, Laurel is confronted with difficult decisions regarding friend relationships, alcohol use, and staying pure with her boyfriend. Will Laurel choose to follow God or will she bow to temptations and peer pressure? In Absolutely Worthy, Laurel, still haunted by the difficult and sometimes tragic events of her senior year, struggles to adjust to college life. Tormented by dreams of the past, she reaches out for Christ to give her peace even in her innermost thoughts. Dealing with the choice between Foster, who is a Christian, and Branson, who has pressured her to have sex, only further complicates her walk with the Lord and her adjustment to college life. Will Laurel come to see her absolute worth in the eyes of God as most important or will she bow to the pressures of her peers? In Finally Sure, all Laurel has ever wanted is peace in her soul, but it's been so elusive. In this final book in the series, Laurel finally decides once and for all that she will pursue a Christian life. Laurel must re-evaluate her relationships to conform them to God's requirements. Will she finally find true, pure love with Charlie? Although things aren't totally smooth, she learns along the way that as long as she follows God, she will be okay.

Its pages also offer a place for Texas Exes to swap stories and share memories of Austin and their alma mater. Book excerpt: Last night Charlie went on a bender. Today he woke up with a tattoo of the mythical African sankofa bird on his right shoulder blade. The solid black tattoo was too dark for his pale white skin, but he hadn't actually chosen the tattoo himself. The sankofa bird looked back over its shoulder as it flew forward justifying its meaning -- one must learn from the past to move into the future. Contrasting again with the too dark tattoo and the too light skin was the pretty brown face of the little girl peaking over her father's shoulder as he cradled her. What on earth was he going to do with this little life? Two days ago he didn't even know she existed. Yesterday he woke up with this strange tattoo. Today he decided to go to the hospital and take responsibility for his daughter. He didn't even know what the tattoo was and why those men had taken it upon themselves to have it given to him. Today it was just some dumb bird that he was contemplating having removed. It would be quite a while before he would find out why he had gotten it and what the significance of it really was. He repositioned her into his arms and tenderly kissed little Sankofa on the forehead. "We can do this."

Book excerpt: Alexandra Robbins wanted to find out if the stereotypes about sorority girls were actually true, so she spent a year with a group of girls in a typical sorority. The sordid behavior of sorority girls exceeded her worst expectations -- drugs, psychological abuse, extreme promiscuity, racism, violence, and rampant eating disorders are just a few of the problems. But even more surprising was the fact that these abuses were inflicted and endured by intelligent, successful, and attractive women. Why is the desire to belong to a sorority so powerful that women are willing to engage in this type of behavior -- especially when the women involved are supposed to be considered 'sisters'? What definition of sisterhood do many women embrace? Pledged combines a sharp-eyed narrative with extensive reporting and the fly-on-the-wall voyeurism of reality shows to provide the answer.
