Book excerpt: Sista Talk: The Personal and the Pedagogical is an inquiry into the questions of how Black women define their existence in a society which devalues, dehumanizes, and silences their beliefs. Placing herself inside of the research, Rochelle Brock invites the reader on a journey of self-exploration, as she and seven of her Black female students investigate their collective journey toward self-awareness in the attempt to liberate their minds and souls from ideological domination. Throughout, Sista Talk attempts to understand the ways in which this self-exploration informs her pedagogy. Combining Black feminist and Afrocentric Theory with critical pedagogy, this book frames the parameters for an Afrowomanist pedagogy of wholeness for teaching Black students.

Book excerpt: Challenges narrow perceptions of Blackness as both an identity and lived reality to understand the diversity of what it means to be Black in the US and around the world What exactly is Blackness and what does it mean to be Black? Is Blackness a matter of biology or consciousness? Who determines who is Black and who is not? Who’s Black, who’s not, and who cares? In the United States, a Black person has come to be defined as any person with any known Black ancestry. Statutorily referred to as “the rule of hypodescent,” this definition of Blackness is more popularly known as the “one-drop rule,” meaning that a person with any trace of Black ancestry, however small or (in)visible, cannot be considered White. A method of social order that began almost immediately after the arrival of enslaved Africans in America, by 1910 it was the law in almost all southern states. At a time when the one-drop rule functioned to protect and preserve White racial purity, Blackness was both a matter of biology and the law. One was either Black or White. Period. Has the social and political landscape changed one hundred years later? One Drop explores the extent to which historical definitions of race continue to shape contemporary racial identities and lived experiences of racial difference. Featuring the perspectives of 60 contributors representing 25 countries and combining candid narratives with striking portraiture, this book provides living testimony to the diversity of Blackness. Although contributors use varying terms to self-identify, they all see themselves as part of the larger racial, cultural, and social group generally referred to as Black. They have all had their identity called into question simply because they do not fit neatly into the stereotypical “Black box”—dark skin, “kinky” hair, broad nose, full lips, etc. Most have been asked “What are you?” or the more politically correct “Where are you from?” throughout their lives. It is through contributors’ lived experiences with and lived imaginings of Black identity that we can visualize multiple possibilities for Blackness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What you and I have experienced in life began before we came into existence. One of the greatest enemies of the present is the ability not to understand the historical foundation that is the structure of our lives. Have you ever heard the words, "what you don't know won't hurt you or "what goes on in this house stays in this house?" Many of us have spent years living behind these words. We have allowed these words to stunt our growth. The author expresses to his readers the importance of understanding the quote; "the past holds the key to the present, and the present holds access to future." The author explores some historical implications that have had an effect on the current lifestyle of many individuals. He elaborates to women the importance of knowing what your name means. Leaving women with the quote; "I was Responsible for waiting on you, I was Accountable in my search for you, I was Consistent in finding you, and now I have to be Persistent that I don't lose you." He helps women/men to understand the difference between Bruh and Men. Leaving men with the quote; "When the man is out of place, the woman becomes displaced, and the children become misplaced." He goes on to express to parents and educators that the key to saving our children is through communication. We must learn to meet our children where they are by understanding the language they speak. He leaves parents and educators with the Cherokee proverb; "If you listen to the whispers, you won't have to hear the screams." The author leaves his readers with the words: "If you leave and grow, you can come back and plant." By believing, in order to be PMD for success, you must WLO, so you can GGL.

Book excerpt: Marisa always knew she was different—in a special way. When she was just a little girl, her father introduced her to her celestial sister, MoonGlow. Throughout her life, Marisa has been aware of mysteries and magic just beyond what she can see. Now in her early forties, she’s come to a turning point. She is a young widow, and her son has left for college. It’s time for a new dream…and with hope and a mystical “knowing,” she buys a supposedly haunted house near the Great Liquid…the ocean, which has always inspired respect and fear in her. As she inhabits her haven by the ocean, she comes to realize that it isn’t haunted: it is alive with spirits who want to draw her into a realm where past and present merge—where she can learn of the journey that brought her here. As she surrenders to her sister MoonGlow, and the moon’s ancient lover High Tide in an ecstatic dance of fate, Marisa will see the triumphs and tragedies of a past that intertwines with the present, as old friends and lovers become new, as past sorrow pierces her present karma, and past joy flowers into new beginnings. Immersed in High Tide’s wonder, guided by MoonGlow, Marisa will truly discover what lies hidden in liquid.

Book excerpt: “When it comes to walking the mean streets, Dickens could give modern genre authors the tour of their lives.” —Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times When a corpse is found in the Thames River and identified as John Harmon, many lives will be forever changed. John, who had been abroad and estranged from his miserly father for years, will no longer collect his inheritance. It will instead go to the miser’s employees, Mr. and Mrs. Boffin, transforming their circumstances. The miser’s will had placed a condition on John: marry Bella Wilfer, a woman he had never met, in order to collect the estate. Now Bella is on her own—until she is generously taken in by the Boffins. These events not only alter the course of several lives, but also end a life—that of the waterman who found John’s body. Accused by a rival of murdering the heir, Gaffer Hexam is soon found drowned as well, resulting in a puzzling mystery and setting Gaffer’s impoverished daughter on a new path that will lead her in surprising, and dangerous, directions. Blending propulsive plot twists with sharp social satire, Our Mutual Friend is the final masterpiece completed by Victorian England’s greatest novelist. “In addition to its realistic police procedures and incisive criminal psychology, Our Mutual Friend is steeped in the gloomy atmosphere and foreboding imagery that one associates with the modern suspense thriller.” —The New York Times
