NOTE ON JELLON GRAME 0 Jellon Grame sat in SUveneood.--St. i. 1. 1. Silverwood, mentioned in this ballad, occurs in a medley Ms. song, which seems to have been copied from the first edition of the Aberdeen cantus, penet John G. Dalyell, Esq., advocate. One line only is cited, apparently the beginning of some song: --' Silverwood, gin ye wer mine.' The name also occurs in the version of' Child Maurice' in the Percy folio sis. (ed. Hales and Furnivall, ii. 502), which has certain similarities with ' Jellon Grame, ' and very closely resembles it in the two opening stanzas: --' Childe Maurice hunted ithe siluer wood, He hunted it round about: And noebodye that he ffounci therin, Nor none there was without. ' He saves come hither, thou litle ffoot-page, Yt runneth lowlye by my knee, Ffor thou shalt goe to John Steward's wiffe, And pray her speake w'h Hut.' WILLIE'S LADYE ANCIENT COPY NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHED 1802 Mr. Lewis, in his Tales of Wonder, has presented the public with a copy of this ballad, with additions and alterations. The Editor has also seen a copy containing some modern stanzas, intended by Mr. Jamieson, of Macclesfield, for publication in his Collection of Scottish Poetry.1 Yet, under these disadvantages, the Editor cannot relinquish his purpose of publishing the old ballad, in its native simplicity, as taken from Mrs. Brown of Falkland's Ms. Those who wish to know how an incantation, or charm, of the distressing nature here described, was performed in classic days, may consult the story of Galanthis's Metamorphosis, in Ovid, or the following passage in Apuleius: ' Eadem (Saga tcilicet qucedam), amaloris uxorem, quod in earn dicacule pro-brum dixerat, jam in sarcmamprcegnalionis, obsepto utero, et repigrat

Book excerpt: This critical edition of Scott's Minstrelsy presents a seminal 19th-century work for a 21st-century audience This 3-volume edition of Scott's Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802-3) presents nearly 100 poems and songs, many of them containing fascinating narratives of death, murder and abductions. It also includes his extended essays on history and the supernatural, in which Scott gives the background to the ballad narratives opening up a window into the life of the Scottish Borders around 1800. The Edinburgh edition presents Scott's original text in a new critical way and tells the stories behind the stories, naming the sources and singers, identifying places and bringing alive the cultural background. For the first time, the extraordinary vitality of the Scottish culture and narratives in the Borders is brought to light through the publication of this iconic text in Scotland's cultural memory.
