Book excerpt: In 1899 while serving in the 2nd Boer War, Robert Baden-Powell penned his sixth military book, Aids To Scouting. It was a non-typical training manual filled with personal stories of intrigue and even games. Its goal was to encourage the development of light reconnaissance scouting skills within the British Army. The book was well received by various armies of its time, including the French Army. His successful defense of Mafeking (1899-1900) in South Africa made Baden-Powell a well-known national hero in Britain. But what completely surprised Baden-Powell was that his book was eagerly taken up by teachers and youth groups to help organize outdoor activities and sport. He eventually embraced the idea of adapting his work into a new youth-oriented book, Scouting for Boys (1908) which went on to sell approx. 150 million copies to date. It was that follow-on book that firmly launched the international Boy Scouts movement. Aids to Scouting contains sections on the characters of a scout, as well as practical advice on observation, stealth/camouflage, map reading, sketching, tracking, reporting and care of horses. It presents these topics is a simple conversational style that makes it easy to read, and is illustrated with personal anecdotes of military adventures by the author. It gives scholars clear insights into his mindset and beliefs that served him well in the siege of Mafeking and shows a clear lineage to the formation of the tenets of his formation of the Boy Scouts. Anyone interested in the history of Boy Scouting will definitely want to read this interesting and formative book. (NOTE - Appendix C contents is missing in this Kindle version - but we hope to update the ebook with it once a suitable facsimile can be referenced). Book excerpt: "I love spy stories — especially when they are true." - Barthélemy Banks, Mumm You think he was the ultimate Boy Scout, but before Robert Baden-Powell founded the Scouting Movement he was a spy. Not only did he spy for the British government, he wrote a book about those adventures -- explaining all. From the passing secret messages to using disguises, from hoodwinking the enemy to knowing whom to trust (no one). Baden-Powell tells all, and it reads like — well, like a spy novel. But it's all true.

It is a reprint of an historical edition of the BSA Handbook. For the first time, we are pleased to present this facsimile copy of the 1910 Original Edition of the Boy Scouts of America Official Handbook! Written primarily by Ernest Thompson Seton, with sections added from Lieutenant General Sir Robert Baden-Powell's "Scouting for Boys" and "Aids to Scouting." The 1910 Original Edition is a milestone in the history of the Boy Scouts of America. Published only from July 1910 to March 1911, this short-lived BSA Handbook was cobbled together using material from Seton's earlier work "The Birch Bark Roll" and then fused with Baden-Powell's Boy Scouts concept. Always meant as a temporary handbook until a proper one could be written and published, the 1910 Original Edition is super interesting and contains a wealth of woodsman's lore and military scouting techniques and training which do not appear in later editions of the BSA Handbooks. Many expertss consider this book to be quite a useful backwoods survival manual, and it definitely has appeal to the modern "classic camping" movement. The content of this edition is presented exactly as per the original, with the same page count, illustrations and table of contents. It's the original text exactly as it was presented in 1910 without some modern "expert" analysis or introduction. Today's reader can make up their own mind by actually reading the book. A perfect gift for the classic camping enthusiast, old Eagle Scout or the young Indiana Jones in your life. With all original illustrations, this new paperback replica edition brings this exceptionally rare book to a 21st Century audience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scouting in Hong Kong, 1910-2010 covers the "what, how, when, who, why and so what" of the Hong Kong Scout Movement from 1910 to 2010, using a large volume of primary sources. It deals with the development of the youth movement both as a subject of enquiry and as an analytical tool which may shed light upon the broader history of Hong Kong. The author combines professed aim of Scouting (citizenship), the key motives for supporting it (governance, war, secular education and religious conversion) and the most relevant differentiating identities (race, class, gender and age) to analyze the experience of young people involved in Hong Kong Scouting throughout the years, both colonial and post-colonial. The book is richly illustrated with interesting and instructive images and relied heavily on a doctoral dissertation by the author, though they are also significantly different in both structure and content. It is a critical study aimed at both general readers and readers with more specific interests, and should enrich their understanding of the histories of Scouting, youth, citizenship education, the colonies, the British Empire, decolonization, China and Hong Kong. By reconstructing the evolution of Scouting from a niche movement for a handful of British boys before the First World War to a fully indigenized and co-educational mass movement in the post-colonial Hong Kong society, it fills a gap in the historical studies of youth movements around the world. By analyzing how the movement and the (re)construction of its particular brand of citizenship training reflected the development of the community, it adds to our understanding of the political, cultural and social history of Hong Kong, often influenced by that of China. By demonstrating the uniqueness of its evolution in the colonial context, it provides useful comparative insights into the history of imperialism and colonial youth movements. By exploring the choices made by local Scouting since Hong Kong's retrocession of sovereignty to China, it compliments other studies on decolonization and post-colonial citizenship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sons of the Empire, Robert MacDonald explores popular ideas and myths in Edwardian Britain, their use by Baden-Powell, and their influence on the Boy Scout movement. In particular, he analyses the model of masculinity provided by the imperial frontier, the view that life in younger, far-flung parts of the empire was stronger, less degenerate than in Britain. The stereotypical adventurer - the frontiersman - provided an alternative ethic to British society. The best known example of it at the time was Baden-Powell himself, a war scout, the Hero of Mafeking in the South African war, and one of the first cult heroes to be created by the modern media. When Baden-Powell founded the Boy Scouts in 1908, he used both the power of the frontier myth and his own legend as a hero to galvanize the movement. The glamour of war scouting was hard to resist, its adventures a seductive invitation to the first recruits. But Baden-Powell had a serious educational program in mind: Boy Scouts were to be trained in good citizenship. MacDonald documents his study with a wide range of contemporary sources, from newspapers to military memoirs. Exploring the genesis of an imperial institution through its own texts, he brings new insight into the Edwardian age.
