Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have appeared on life of Sir M.Visvesvaraya both in Kannada ,English and other Indian languages along with hundreds of articles. All these books and articles depict the life and achievements of Sir M.V in typical hagiographical style. None of these books and articles provide different outlook. A few contemporary literati who did not have any proper idea of science and engineering and some like minded people of particular group who had social status started to propagate each and every work of Sir M.V as a great achievement. In due course of time this became a tradition. As continuation of this tradition books and articles on Sir M.V are being published one after the other. The author of this current book , who is a civil engineering consultant by profession has deviated from the trodden path and subjected Sir M.V to critical technical examination. Pride , devotion or fear , belief and blind majority does not have any place in science and technology. Objectivity is the only criterion for it. But in case of Sir M.V all these have combined and utilized to glorify him to divinity. Author argues that the achievements of an engineer shall be evaluated on technical grounds only and not on any other emotional issues. Through this author argues that Sir M.V was not a great engineer but only an ordinary engineer like many others.

Book excerpt: India’s Princely States covered nearly 40 per cent of the Indian subcontinent at the time of Indian independence, and they collapsed after the departure of the British. This book provides a chronological analysis of the Princely State in colonial times and its post-colonial legacies. Focusing on one of the largest and most important of these states, the Princely State of Mysore, it offers a novel interpretation and thorough investigation of the relationship of king and subject in South Asia. The book argues that the denial of political and economic power to the king, especially after 1831 when direct British control was imposed over the state administration in Mysore, was paralleled by a counter-balancing multiplication of kingly ritual, rites, and social duties. The book looks at how, at the very time when kingly authority was lacking income and powers of patronage, its local sources of power and social roots were being reinforced and rebuilt in a variety of ways. Using a combination of historical and anthropological methodologies, and based upon substantial archival and field research, the book argues that the idea of kingship lived on in South India and continues to play a vital and important role in contemporary South Indian social and political life. Book excerpt: Mother Teresa of Calcutta was the founder of the Missionaries ofCharity and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, but her story is so much moreremarkable. From her childhood in the Balkans to her work in India, from attendingthe victims of war-torn Beirut to pleading with George Bush and Saddam Husseinto choose peace over war, Mother Teresa was driven by a mighty faith. Newly revised and updated, this edition includes a personal insight into thebeatification and continuing process of canonization for Mother Teresa, theongoing work of the Missionaries of Charity, and her “dark night of the soul.” Mother Teresa consistently claimed that she was simply responding to Christ’sboundless love for her and for all of humanity, bringing to the world a great lessonin joyful and selfless love. This book is a glimpse into her extraordinary faith, work, and life.
