Book excerpt: Quett Ketumile Joni Masire was born in Kanye in 1925 and later became one of the founding fathers of independent Botswana. Long admired for his innovative farming methods, Sir Ketumile formed the Botswana Democratic Party in 1962 and was one of the key architects of Botswana's political and economic development. He then served as Vice President of Botswana from 1966-1980 and then became President in 1980 upon the death of Sir Seretse Khama. He lead his party to three successive election victories in 1984, 1989 and 1994, retiring in 1988. The years under Masire realized stellar income per capita growth rates, extensive decline in corruption, and important changes in the election processes. Since retiring from the Presidency, Masire was knighted in 1991 and has continued to be an influential presence in African affairs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom in the World, the Freedom House flagship survey whose findings have been published annually since 1972, is the standard-setting comparative assessment of global political rights and civil liberties. The survey ratings and narrative reports on 192 countries and a group of select territories are used by policy makers, the media, international corporations, and civic activists and human rights defenders to monitor trends in democracy and track improvements and setbacks in freedom worldwide. Press accounts of the survey findings appear in hundreds of influential newspapers in the United States and abroad and form the basis of numerous radio and television reports. The Freedom in the World political rights and civil liberties ratings are determined through a multi-layered process of research and evaluation by a team of regional analysts and eminent scholars. The analysts used a broad range of sources of information, including foreign and domestic news reports, academic studies, nongovernmental organizations, think tanks, individual professional contacts, and visits to the region, in conducting their research. The methodology of the survey is derived in large measure from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and these standards are applied to all countries and territories, irrespective of geographical location, ethnic or religious composition, or level of economic development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new, thoroughly updated sixth edition of Bradt’s Botswana Safari Guide remains the only full-blown, standalone guide to one of Africa’s most popular and rewarding safari destinations. This is the sole guide to focus on Botswana’s key safari locations: the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park and the Northern Kalahari. Botswana’s wilderness is pristine, a virtue underpinned by governmental commitment to sustainable tourism. The Okavango Delta’s permanent waters attract year-round wildlife, including all the ‘big five’. Outside the Delta, this English-speaking country offers tremendous variety in landscapes, from the arid Kalahari to lush forests. Riverine areas harbour spectacular herds of elephants and buffalo, as well as mighty predator populations. Dusty savannahs attract hardier game such as oryx and springbok. On Makgadikgadi’s great salt pans, zebras gather in huge congregations after rain. Birdwatching is brilliant throughout. Then there’s Botswana’s rich history, from the ancient rock paintings at the Tsodilo Hills to Stone Age arrowheads on the Makgadikgadi Pans. Bradt’s Botswana Safari Guide offers detailed descriptions of many lodges, from traditional tented camps to those offering five-star luxury and top-class cuisine, plus detail on what animals occur where, enabling you to select the optimum approach. With this book’s comprehensive GPS co-ordinates and detailed maps, independent travellers can drive themselves around. But perhaps you prefer bespoke mobile safaris with a private guide? Either way, take a night drive to see creatures of the dark: genets and hunting leopards. For a different feel, explore rivers on gentle motorboat cruises, including on multi-day trips, or get closer to the water in a traditional mokoro (dug-out canoe), with a poler escorting you along shallow waterways. Or seek out a specialist walking camp for the excitement of bush walks – when meerkats might even pose atop your head for a great lookout. And why not use this book’s advice to book-end trips by visiting Livingstone (Zambia) and the Victoria Falls? Written and updated by Chris and Susie McIntyre, experts on all things Africa, Bradt’s Botswana Safari Guide is the definitive companion to discovering this thrilling destination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa has experienced dozens of conflicts over a variety of issues during the past two decades. Responding to these conflicts requires concerted action to manage the crises – the violence, the political discord, and the humanitarian consequences of prolonged fighting. It is also necessary to address the long-term social and economic impacts of conflict, to rebuild communities, societies and states that have been torn apart. To accomplish this requires the involvement of institutions and groups rarely considered in formal official African conflict management activities: schools, universities, religious institutions, media, commercial enterprises, legal institutions, civil society groups, youth, women and migrants. These groups and organizations have an important role to play in building a sense of identity, fairness, shared norms and cohesion between state and society – all critical components of the fabric of peace and security in Africa. This volume brings together leading experts from Africa, Europe and North America to examine these critical social institutions and groups, and consider how they can either improve or impede peaceful conflict resolution. The overarching questions that are explored by the authors are: What constitutes social cohesion and resilience in the face of conflict? What are the threats to cohesion and resilience? And how can the positive elements be fostered and by whom? The second of two volumes on African conflict management capacity by the editors, The Fabric of Peace in Africa: Looking beyond the State opens new doors of understanding for students, scholars and practitioners focused on strengthening peace in Africa; the first volume, Minding the Gap: African Conflict Management in a Time of change, focused on the role of mediation and peacekeeping in managing violence and political crises.

Book excerpt: Meetings with Death is a story about a Southern African girl, Eana, with the unique ability to see Death. The story follows the evolution of her relationship with one of the oldest supernatural beings in existence. That relationship puts the spotlight on her in a power-hungry world of magic and forces her to fight for her life. She battles against an organisation of Shamans that has declared her family anathema. This organisation harbours the greatest wielder of dark magic, who is hell bent on capturing Eana for himself. She is forced into unlikely alliances and uncovers painful betrayals as she tries to make space in this new world for the creature that she is becoming. Her travels through the spiritual realm bring her face to face with beings that she believed only existed in myth and now she is forced to confront the idea that she might become one of them herself. The book follows the themes of spirituality, magic, taboo, rituals and the supernatural entities that are woven through African beliefs and twists them into a modern fantasy epic set in both the streets of our everyday lives and the realms of the ancestral and supernatural beings.
