Book Synopsis New Perspectives on English Historical Linguistics: Lexis and transmission by : Christian Kay
Download or read book New Perspectives on English Historical Linguistics: Lexis and transmission written by Christian Kay and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two volumes of papers selected from those given at the 12th International Conference on English Historical Linguistics. The first is New Perspectives on English Historical Linguistics (1): Syntax and Morphology. Together the volumes provide an overview of many of the issues that are currently engaging practitioners in the field. In this volume, the primary concern is with the historical study of the English lexicon and its sound and writing systems. Using research tools such as machine-readable text and lexical corpora, and intellectual tools such as corpus and cognitive linguistics, many of the papers move from a close study of a set of data to conclusions of theoretical significance, often concerning questions of classification and organisation. More broadly, whether concerned with lexicology or transmission, the papers have a social orientation, since neither lexicology nor phonology can be seen as divorced from its social setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This modern-spelling critical edition of a famous and controversial theatrical document from the Elizabethan age shows that Sir Thomas More is the best extant example of the genre of biographical history. Following a radical re-examination of the manuscript, this edition relates step by step to the process by which the play acquired its final form, accounting in the collation and in the rejected or alternative passages at the end of the text for each single word or mark found in the manuscript. Particular attention is devoted to the use of sources not previously identified, most of which are reproduced in the appendices.

Book Synopsis Material Culture and Cultural Materialisms in the Middle Ages and Renaissance by : Curtis Perry
Download or read book Material Culture and Cultural Materialisms in the Middle Ages and Renaissance written by Curtis Perry and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase 'cultural materialism' names an approach to cultural analysis that interrogates the socio-economic conditions within which artefacts are produced as well as their participation in other ideological and material fields of culture. Disciplines that have traditionally studied cultural artefacts like literature and painting have increasingly focused on the material production and ideological operation of objects once thought of in idealized or purely aesthetic terms. By the same token, historians - whose work, of necessity, has always tended to deal with the material traces of culture - have increasingly been willing to consider the social and ideological importance of art. The increasing popularity of this cultural studies approach to the past has in turn spurred investigation into other kinds of materiality. Recent historical and literary scholarship, for example, has become increasingly aware of the ways in which the lived materiality of the human body informs a range of cultural discourses.
