Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this book, the literature on fitted mesh methods for singularly perturbed problems has expanded significantly. Over the intervening years, fitted meshes have been shown to be effective for an extensive set of singularly perturbed partial differential equations. In the revised version of this book, the reader will find an introduction to the basic theory associated with fitted numerical methods for singularly perturbed differential equations. Fitted mesh methods focus on the appropriate distribution of the mesh points for singularly perturbed problems. The global errors in the numerical approximations are measured in the pointwise maximum norm. The fitted mesh algorithm is particularly simple to implement in practice, but the theory of why these numerical methods work is far from simple. This book can be used as an introductory text to the theory underpinning fitted mesh methods.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the mathematical theory of nonlinear problems described by elliptic partial differential equations. These equations can be seen as nonlinear versions of the classical Laplace equation, and they appear as mathematical models in different branches of physics, chemistry, biology, genetics, and engineering and are also relevant in differential geometry and relativistic physics. Much of the modern theory of such equations is based on the calculus of variations and functional analysis. Concentrating on single-valued or multivalued elliptic equations with nonlinearities of various types, the aim of this volume is to obtain sharp existence or nonexistence results, as well as decay rates for general classes of solutions. Many technically relevant questions are presented and analyzed in detail. A systematic picture of the most relevant phenomena is obtained for the equations under study, including bifurcation, stability, asymptotic analysis, and optimal regularity of solutions. The method of presentation should appeal to readers with different backgrounds in functional analysis and nonlinear partial differential equations. All chapters include detailed heuristic arguments providing thorough motivation of the study developed later on in the text, in relationship with concrete processes arising in applied sciences. A systematic description of the most relevant singular phenomena described in this volume includes existence (or nonexistence) of solutions, unicity or multiplicity properties, bifurcation and asymptotic analysis, and optimal regularity. The book includes an extensive bibliography and a rich index, thus allowing for quick orientation among the vast collection of literature on the mathematical theory of nonlinear phenomena described by elliptic partial differential equations.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear elliptic problems play an increasingly important role in mathematics, science and engineering, creating an exciting interplay between the subjects. This is the first and only book to prove in a systematic and unifying way, stability, convergence and computing results for the different numerical methods for nonlinear elliptic problems. The proofs use linearization, compact perturbation of the coercive principal parts, or monotone operator techniques, and approximation theory. Examples are given for linear to fully nonlinear problems (highest derivatives occur nonlinearly) and for the most important space discretization methods: conforming and nonconforming finite element, discontinuous Galerkin, finite difference, wavelet (and, in a volume to follow, spectral and meshfree) methods. A number of specific long open problems are solved here: numerical methods for fully nonlinear elliptic problems, wavelet and meshfree methods for nonlinear problems, and more general nonlinear boundary conditions. We apply it to all these problems and methods, in particular to eigenvalues, monotone operators, quadrature approximations, and Newton methods. Adaptivity is discussed for finite element and wavelet methods. The book has been written for graduate students and scientists who want to study and to numerically analyze nonlinear elliptic differential equations in Mathematics, Science and Engineering. It can be used as material for graduate courses or advanced seminars.

Book excerpt: The maximum principle induces an order structure for partial differential equations, and has become an important tool in nonlinear analysis. This book is the first of two volumes to systematically introduce the applications of order structure in certain nonlinear partial differential equation problems. The maximum principle is revisited through the use of the Krein-Rutman theorem and the principal eigenvalues. Its various versions, such as the moving plane and sliding plane methods, are applied to a variety of important problems of current interest. The upper and lower solution method, especially its weak version, is presented in its most up-to-date form with enough generality to cater for wide applications. Recent progress on the boundary blow-up problems and their applications are discussed, as well as some new symmetry and Liouville type results over half and entire spaces. Some of the results included here are published for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimization in Solving Elliptic Problems focuses on one of the most interesting and challenging problems of computational mathematics - the optimization of numerical algorithms for solving elliptic problems. It presents detailed discussions of how asymptotically optimal algorithms may be applied to elliptic problems to obtain numerical solutions meeting certain specified requirements. Beginning with an outline of the fundamental principles of numerical methods, this book describes how to construct special modifications of classical finite element methods such that for the arising grid systems, asymptotically optimal iterative methods can be applied. Optimization in Solving Elliptic Problems describes the construction of computational algorithms resulting in the required accuracy of a solution and having a pre-determined computational complexity. Construction of asymptotically optimal algorithms is demonstrated for multi-dimensional elliptic boundary value problems under general conditions. In addition, algorithms are developed for eigenvalue problems and Navier-Stokes problems. The development of these algorithms is based on detailed discussions of topics that include accuracy estimates of projective and difference methods, topologically equivalent grids and triangulations, general theorems on convergence of iterative methods, mixed finite element methods for Stokes-type problems, methods of solving fourth-order problems, and methods for solving classical elasticity problems. Furthermore, the text provides methods for managing basic iterative methods such as domain decomposition and multigrid methods. These methods, clearly developed and explained in the text, may be used to develop algorithms for solving applied elliptic problems. The mathematics necessary to understand the development of such algorithms is provided in the introductory material within the text, and common specifications of algorithms that have been developed for typical problems in mathema

Book excerpt: Several important problems arising in Physics, Di?erential Geometry and other n topics lead to consider semilinear variational elliptic equations on R and a great deal of work has been devoted to their study. From the mathematical point of view, the main interest relies on the fact that the tools of Nonlinear Functional Analysis, based on compactness arguments, in general cannot be used, at least in a straightforward way, and some new techniques have to be developed. n On the other hand, there are several elliptic problems on R which are p- turbative in nature. In some cases there is a natural perturbation parameter, like inthe bifurcationfromthe essentialspectrum orinsingularlyperturbed equations or in the study of semiclassical standing waves for NLS. In some other circ- stances, one studies perturbations either because this is the ?rst step to obtain global results or else because it often provides a correct perspective for further global studies. For these perturbation problems a speci?c approach, that takes advantage of such a perturbative setting, seems the most appropriate. These abstract tools are provided by perturbation methods in critical point theory. Actually, it turns out that such a framework can be used to handle a large variety of equations, usually considered di?erent in nature. Theaimofthismonographistodiscusstheseabstractmethodstogetherwith their applications to several perturbation problems, whose common feature is to n involve semilinear Elliptic Partial Di?erential Equations on R with a variational structure.

Book excerpt: A thoughtful consideration of the current level of development of multigrid methods, this volume is a carefully edited collection of papers that addresses its topic on several levels. The first three chapters orient the reader who is familiar with standard numerical techniques to multigrid methods, first by discussing multigrid in the context of standard techniques, second by detailing the mechanics of use of the method, and third by applying the basic method to some current problems in fluid dynamics. The fourth chapter provides a unified development, complete with theory, of algebraic multigrid (AMG), which is a linear equation solver based on multigrid principles. The last chapter is an ambitious development of a very general theory of multigrid methods for variationally posed problems. Included as an appendix is the latest edition of the Multigrid Bibliography, an attempted compilation of all existing research publications on multigrid.

Book excerpt: Many researchers in geometric functional analysis are unaware of algebraic aspects of the subject and the advances they have permitted in the last half century. This book, written by two world experts on homological methods in Banach space theory, gives functional analysts a new perspective on their field and new tools to tackle its problems. All techniques and constructions from homological algebra and category theory are introduced from scratch and illustrated with concrete examples at varying levels of sophistication. These techniques are then used to present both important classical results and powerful advances from recent years. Finally, the authors apply them to solve many old and new problems in the theory of (quasi-) Banach spaces and outline new lines of research. Containing a lot of material unavailable elsewhere in the literature, this book is the definitive resource for functional analysts who want to know what homological algebra can do for them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finite element methods for approximating partial differential equations have reached a high degree of maturity, and are an indispensible tool in science and technology. This textbook aims at providing a thorough introduction to the construction, analysis, and implementation of finite element methods for model problems arising in continuum mechanics. The first part of the book discusses elementary properties of linear partial differential equations along with their basic numerical approximation, the functional-analytical framework for rigorously establishing existence of solutions, and the construction and analysis of basic finite element methods. The second part is devoted to the optimal adaptive approximation of singularities and the fast iterative solution of linear systems of equations arising from finite element discretizations. In the third part, the mathematical framework for analyzing and discretizing saddle-point problems is formulated, corresponding finte element methods are analyzed, and particular applications including incompressible elasticity, thin elastic objects, electromagnetism, and fluid mechanics are addressed. The book includes theoretical problems and practical projects for all chapters, and an introduction to the implementation of finite element methods.

Book excerpt: The analysis of singular perturbed differential equations began early in this century, when approximate solutions were constructed from asymptotic ex pansions. (Preliminary attempts appear in the nineteenth century [vD94].) This technique has flourished since the mid-1960s. Its principal ideas and methods are described in several textbooks. Nevertheless, asymptotic ex pansions may be impossible to construct or may fail to simplify the given problem; then numerical approximations are often the only option. The systematic study of numerical methods for singular perturbation problems started somewhat later - in the 1970s. While the research frontier has been steadily pushed back, the exposition of new developments in the analysis of numerical methods has been neglected. Perhaps the only example of a textbook that concentrates on this analysis is [DMS80], which collects various results for ordinary differential equations, but many methods and techniques that are relevant today (especially for partial differential equa tions) were developed after 1980.Thus contemporary researchers must comb the literature to acquaint themselves with earlier work. Our purposes in writing this introductory book are twofold. First, we aim to present a structured account of recent ideas in the numerical analysis of singularly perturbed differential equations. Second, this important area has many open problems and we hope that our book will stimulate further investigations. Our choice of topics is inevitably personal and reflects our own main interests.

It contains the first systematic presentation of a general approach to the integration of singularly perturbed differential equations describing nonuniform transitions, such as the occurrence of a boundary layer, discontinuities, boundary effects and so on. The method of regularization of singular perturbations presented here can be applied to the asymptotic integration of systems of ordinary and partial differential equations.
