Book excerpt: In this dissertation, the prospect of a quantum technology based on a photonic crystal chip hosting a quantum network made of quantum dot spins interacting via single photons is investigated. The mathematical procedure to deal with the Liouville-Von Neumann equation, which describes the time-evolution of the density matrix, was derived for an arbitrary system, giving general equations. Using this theoretical groundwork, a numerical model was then developed to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of entanglement between various qubits produced in a controlled way over the entire quantum network. As a result, an efficient quantum interface was engineered allowing for storage qubits and traveling qubits to exchange information coherently while demonstrating little error and loss in the process; such interface is indispensable for the realization of a functional quantum network. Furthermore, a carefully orchestrated dynamic control over the propagation of the flying qubit showed high-efficiency capability for on-chip single-photon transfer. Using the optimized dispersion properties obtained quantum mechanically as design parameters, a possible physical structure for the photonic crystal chip was constructed using the Plane Wave Expansion and Finite-Difference Time-Domain numerical techniques, exhibiting almost identical transfer efficiencies in terms of normalized energy densities of the classical electromagnetic field. These promising results bring us one step closer to the physical realization of an integrated quantum technology combining both semiconductor quantum dots and sub-wavelength photonic structures.

Devices based on semiconductor quantum dots hold great potential for the practical realisation of many of the components required in the proposed schemes. This thesis describes the development of several quantum dot devices. By integrating a quantum dot into a p-i-n diode, it was possible to control the dominant emission lines in its photoluminescence spectrum and to maximise the degree of polarisation correlation between the two photons emitted in the biexciton decay. With the same device under a magnetic field, a digital memory was demonstrated. The polarisation information of a single photon was stored as the spin of an electron inside the quantum dot, and was deterministically recovered some time later by the application of an electrical trigger. A fabrication process was developed in order to produce high quality two dimensional slab photonic crystals operating with a photonic band gap at ~ 900 nm. By placing a quantum dot into an appropriately designed H1 photonic crystal cavity, strong coupling was achieved between the dot and the monopole mode of the cavity. The vacuum Rabi splitting was found to be constant for all linear polarisations due to the unpolarised nature of the far-field of the mode. Finally, a new kind of cavity based on photonic crystal waveguides was developed. A Purcell enhancement of the in-plane spontaneous emission from a quantum dot coupled to a unidirectional photonic crystal waveguide was demonstrated.

New types of on-chip optical technologies that exploit the quantum mechanical nature of light have the potential to open up an entirely new direction for semiconductor devices, combining the fine control of cavity quantum electrodynamics with the convenience of the semiconductor platform. However, the practical implementation of quantum technologies on a chip will require an on-demand source of non-classical states of light, such as pulses with a well-defined number of photons. In this dissertation, I present the development of a semiconductor non-classical light source based on coupling artificial atoms (quantum dots) to small mode-volume optical resonators (photonic crystal nanocavities). The strong coupling we achieve between a quantum dot and a photonic crystal nanocavity produces a hybridization of the quantum dot excitation with the optical field confined inside the cavity. I demonstrate how the rich energy structure exhibited by this system enables us to control the statistics of photons in a transmitted laser beam, moving between sub-Poissonian and super-Poissonian on demand. I also discuss how these non-classical states of light can be characterized by examining the higher-order photon correlations measured via a generalized Hanbury Brown and Twiss type interferometer. Furthermore, I show that by detuning the quantum dot resonance away from the cavity resonance, we can improve both the purity and the efficiency of single-photon generation in this system. This approach allows us to combine the high fidelity of single quantum emitters with the high repetition rate and accessibility of optical cavities. Finally, I explore methods for scaling up this system by fabricating multiple photonic crystal nanocavities in such a way that they couple to each other. I present the experimental realization of a photonic molecule (two coupled photonic crystal nanocavities) that is strongly coupled to a quantum dot contained inside one of the component cavities. I also examine the fabrication of coupled optical cavity arrays in this photonic crystal platform. Our experimental findings demonstrate that the coupling between the cavities is significantly larger than the fabrication-induced disorder in the cavity frequencies. Satisfying this condition is necessary for using such cavity arrays to generate strongly correlated photons, which could potentially be used for the quantum simulation of many-body systems.
