Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'With Willful Intent: A Theology of Sin' is a full orbed examination of sin and the human Fall. Its intention is to provide the reader/student with both the materials and methodology to formulate his or her own biblically based theology of sin. The book is arranged in four sequential sections to guide the reader through the process of theological development. The first section, "A Historical Theology of Sin," furnishes a detailed outline of Christian thought on sin from the time of the early church to the present day. These chapters will help the reader to understand why so many differing views of sin and the Fall exist. The second section, "A Biblical Theology of Sin," is the keystone of theological formulation. It apprises the student of the biblical teaching on the human Fall and its subsequent ramifications. Because believers hold the Bible to be the fully inspired, all-sufficient Word of God, what it says about sin must be determinative in one's development of a theology of sin. The third section, "A Systematic Theology of Sin," seeks to synthesize the teaching of the Bible while drawing on the insights of history, science, and the social sciences. Topics covered include the nature of sin, its universality, its transmission, its relationship to Satan and the demonic, and its conquest through Jesus Christ. Any theology is worthless if it cannot be related to daily living. The conclusion, "A Practical Theology of Sin," demonstrates how the theology which has been formulated may be applied to the individual life of the believer and to the church's ministry.

Book excerpt: Never cross the line. That had always been my rule. But that was before Race True. The moment I saw her, I wanted her. But there was a problem. She wasn’t just another pretty face—no, she was my first client at ALFA PI. My take-what-I-want attitude shouldn't include her, but how the hell can I be expected to keep my hands off? The danger that followed her had my protective instincts in overdrive. And as the clock ticked down, the choice was laid out before me: save her career or risk everything and have her in my bed. Could I put aside my wants for her needs? Or would my selfishness destroy everything in the process?

One of the oldest Acaryas of this school of Saivism, Sadyojyoti has composed a commentary on its vidyapada section. The subjects dealt with are pasu, the bound soul; pasa, the bond;p anugraha, God`s grace and adhvan, the way to liberation. sadyojyoti has taken definite and extreme positions on the philosophical problems raised by these concepts. He emphasized their ritualistic foundation which is the true spirit of Tantric literature and the core of the Saiva religion. The text of his commentary is critically edited here and published with an English translation.

Book excerpt: The Zend-Avesta is the sacred book of the Parsis, that is to say, of the few remaining followers of that religion which feigned over Persia at the time when the second successor of Mohammed overthrew the Sassanian dynasty, and which has been called Dualism, or Mazdeism, or Magism, or Zoroastrianism, or Fire-worship, according as its main tenet, or its supreme God, or its priests, or its supposed founder, or its apparent object of worship has been most kept in view. In less than a century after their defeat, nearly all the conquered people were brought over to the faith of their new rulers, either by force, or policy, or the attractive power of a simpler form of creed. But many of those who clung to the faith of their fathers, went and sought abroad for a new home, where they might freely worship their old gods, say their old prayers, and perform their old rites. That home they found at last among the tolerant Hindus, on the western coast of India and in the peninsula of Guzerat. There they throve and there they live still, while the ranks of their co-religionists in Persia are daily thinning and dwindling away. As the Parsis are the ruins of a people, so are their sacred books the ruins of a religion. There has been no other great belief in the world that ever left such poor and meagre monuments of its past splendour. Yet great is the value which that small book, the Avesta, and the belief of that scanty people, the Parsis, have in the eyes of the historian and theologist, as they present to us the last reflex of the ideas which prevailed in Iran during the five centuries which preceded and the seven which followed the birth of Christ, a period which gave to the world the Gospels, the Talmud, and the Qur’ân. Persia, it is known, had much influence on each of the movements which produced, or proceeded from, those three books; she lent much to the first heresiarchs, much to the Rabbis, much to Mohammed. By help of the Parsi religion and the Avesta, we are enabled to go back to the very heart of that most momentous period in the history of religious thought, which saw the blending of the Aryan mind with the Semitic, and thus opened the second stage of Aryan thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the health of the body can be defined by its functioning parts and systems, the health of the person is more complex. To flourish, we need to understand health in the context of God’s intent. A Theology of Health presents a Christian understanding of the very concept of health, both the health of the body and the health of the person. Preeminent scholar Tyler J. VanderWeele argues that health can be understood as wholeness as intended by God and that sin—whether individual wrongdoing, societal injustice, or the fallenness of creation—causes ill health. VanderWeele explains that restoration and fulfillment of health is salvation, pointed toward in the life of Jesus Christ, to be lived out through the work of the Church, and for which we await final completion. VanderWeele also demonstrates the broader relevance and implications of his insights to all who seek to understand health, well-being, and the ultimate ends of human life. A Theology of Health is an essential theological exploration that seeks to promote health, healing, and flourishing of the whole person.

Book excerpt: What does it mean to be righteous? To be holy? By what standard will God judge us when we die? As the Bible tells us in 1Corinthians 8:2"And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know." For nearly two millennia, Christians have followed the philosophy of Asceticism: a philosophy which teaches that ignorance about sex is bestbecause it is based on Fear. Yet God's philosophy is LOVE; and to love requires knowledge. In this, the second volume of Sex and the Bible, we will therefore take a very close look at the teachings of the Bible, in order to discover what God really thinks about SEX. Roll over, St. Augustine!
