Book excerpt: Brealyn Mia Winters... Something instead of nothing, friends... That's what he said. The blank walls within that bland box he placed us in is maddening. When I'm near him it sure feels like a lot more than just a friendly interlude. In theory, walking away from Brogan Creed seems like the smart thing to do. The warning signs are there. I should be put off, but I'm so far from that resolve. My mind refuses that conclusion. My place in this world involves this man. That much I'm sure of. His key role in my life is not that of a friend either. Weirdly enough, he's always in sync with my thoughts. My inner secrets don't even feel as though they belong to me anymore. When I'm alone I sense him. I feel him all around me. I can even smell him. My mental stability is hanging on by a thin thread. Brogan believes that some kind of a curse hangs over his head. Giving in to what we both want will somehow damn me. What he fails to understand is that without him, I feel like a plague is slowly migrating its way viciously throughout my bloodstream. He's not protecting me, no. He's only contributing to the source of my pain. Prolonging it would be a more accurate assessment too. Without effort, the Wallstreet God owns me. Body, heart, and soul. Nothing will ever change that. Brogan Malic Creed... That's her future... DEATH. Of course, my twisted brother's words are my psyches go to anytime I get near her. Always from a distance. Not within or out of arm's length, a guarded guide. A fine balance of need versus necessity. Silently stealing her mind mysteries and lurking in the dark shadows to be closer to her is my new way of life now. My senses soar with distrust mixed with disgust for my shared DNA. But becoming the boardroom boss was not an achievement reached by trusting those enemies that gather at the round table, oh no. My worries are not consumed with that of the family tree anyway. There's only one flaw to the overall plan here. Brealyn Winters is not own by no one, no-no... She holds the power. Make no mistake in the fact that I am irrevocably held captive by a delicate, untouchable, and forbidden butterfly. One that I intend on protecting.

Book Synopsis Sin in the Second City by : Karen Abbott
Download or read book Sin in the Second City written by Karen Abbott and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2008-06-10 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Step into the perfumed parlors of the Everleigh Club, the most famous brothel in American history–and the catalyst for a culture war that rocked the nation. Operating in Chicago’s notorious Levee district at the dawn of the last century, the Club’s proprietors, two aristocratic sisters named Minna and Ada Everleigh, welcomed moguls and actors, senators and athletes, foreign dignitaries and literary icons, into their stately double mansion, where thirty stunning Everleigh “butterflies” awaited their arrival. Courtesans named Doll, Suzy Poon Tang, and Brick Top devoured raw meat to the delight of Prince Henry of Prussia and recited poetry for Theodore Dreiser. Whereas lesser madams pocketed most of a harlot’s earnings and kept a “whipper” on staff to mete out discipline, the Everleighs made sure their girls dined on gourmet food, were examined by an honest physician, and even tutored in the literature of Balzac. Not everyone appreciated the sisters’ attempts to elevate the industry. Rival Levee madams hatched numerous schemes to ruin the Everleighs, including an attempt to frame them for the death of department store heir Marshall Field, Jr. But the sisters’ most daunting foes were the Progressive Era reformers, who sent the entire country into a frenzy with lurid tales of “white slavery”——the allegedly rampant practice of kidnapping young girls and forcing them into brothels. This furor shaped America’s sexual culture and had repercussions all the way to the White House, including the formation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. With a cast of characters that includes Jack Johnson, John Barrymore, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., William Howard Taft, “Hinky Dink” Kenna, and Al Capone, Sin in the Second City is Karen Abbott’s colorful, nuanced portrait of the iconic Everleigh sisters, their world-famous Club, and the perennial clash between our nation’s hedonistic impulses and Puritanical roots. Culminating in a dramatic last stand between brothel keepers and crusading reformers, Sin in the Second City offers a vivid snapshot of America’s journey from Victorian-era propriety to twentieth-century modernity. Visit www.sininthesecondcity.com to learn more! “Delicious… Abbott describes the Levee’s characters in such detail that it’s easy to mistake this meticulously researched history for literary fiction.” —— New York Times Book Review “ Described with scrupulous concern for historical accuracy…an immensely readable book.” —— Joseph Epstein, The Wall Street Journal “Assiduously researched… even this book’s minutiae makes for good storytelling.” —— Janet Maslin, The New York Times “Karen Abbott has pioneered sizzle history in this satisfyingly lurid tale. Change the hemlines, add 100 years, and the book could be filed under current affairs.” —— USA Today “A rousingly racy yarn.” –Chicago Tribune “A colorful history of old Chicago that reads like a novel… a compelling and eloquent story.” —— The Atlanta Journal-Constitution “Gorgeously detailed” —— New York Daily News “At last, a history book you can bring to the beach.” —— The Philadelphia Inquirer “Once upon a time, Chicago had a world class bordello called The Everleigh Club. Author Karen Abbott brings the opulent place and its raunchy era alive in a book that just might become this years “The Devil In the White City.” —— Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine (cover story) “As Abbott’s delicious and exhaustively researched book makes vividly clear, the Everleigh Club was the Taj Mahal of bordellos.” —— Chicago Sun Times “The book is rich with details about a fast-and-loose Chicago of the early 20th century… Sin explores this world with gusto, throwing light on a booming city and exposing its shadows.” —— Time Out Chicago “[Abbott’s] research enables the kind of vivid description à la fellow journalist Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City that make what could be a dry historic account an intriguing read." – Seattle Times “Abbott tells her story with just the right mix of relish and restraint, providing a piquant guide to a world of sexuality” —— The Atlantic “A rollicking tale from a more vibrant time: history to a ragtime beat.” – Kirkus Reviews “With gleaming prose and authoritative knowledge Abbott elucidates one of the most colorful periods in American history, and the result reads like the very best fiction. Sex, opulence, murder — What's not to love?” —— Sara Gruen, author of Water for Elephants “A detailed and intimate portrait of the Ritz of brothels, the famed Everleigh Club of turn-of-the-century Chicago. Sisters Minna and Ada attracted the elites of the world to such glamorous chambers as the Room of 1,000 Mirrors, complete with a reflective floor. And isn’t Minna’s advice to her resident prostitutes worthy advice for us all: “Give, but give interestingly and with mystery.”’ —— Erik Larson, author of The Devil in the White City “Karen Abbott has combined bodice-ripping salaciousness with top-notch scholarship to produce a work more vivid than a Hollywood movie.” —— Melissa Fay Greene, author of There is No Me Without You “Sin in the Second City is a masterful history lesson, a harrowing biography, and - best of all - a superfun read. The Everleigh story closely follows the turns of American history like a little sister. I can't recommend this book loudly enough.” —— Darin Strauss, author of Chang and Eng “This is a story of debauchery and corruption, but it is also a story of sisterhood, and unerring devotion. Meticulously researched, and beautifully crafted, Sin in the Second City is an utterly captivating piece of history.” —— Julian Rubinstein, author of Ballad of the Whiskey Robber

Download or read book Sin Bravely written by Maggie Rowe and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tour de force, voice-driven debut that examines how one woman finally found the middle ground between Heaven and Hell--an NPR Best Book of the Year. As a young girl, Maggie Rowe took the idea of salvation very seriously. Growing up in a moderately religious household, her fear of eternal damnation turned into a childhood terror that drove her to become an outrageously dedicated Born-again Christian —regularly slinging Bible verses in cutthroat scripture memorization competitions and assaulting strangers at shopping malls with the “good news” that they were going to hell. Finally, at nineteen, crippled by her fear, she checked herself in to an Evangelical psychiatric facility. And that is where her journey really began. Surrounded by a ragtag cast of characters, including a former biker meth-head struggling with anger management issues, a set of identical twins tormented by erotic fantasies, a World War II veteran and artist of denial who insists that he’s only “locked up for a tune-up,” and a warm and upbeat chronic depressive who becomes the author’s closest ally, Maggie launches a campaign to, in the words of Martin Luther, "Sin bravely in order to know the forgiveness of God."

Book Synopsis Sin is a Puppy that Follows You Home by : Balaraba Ramat Yakubu
Download or read book Sin is a Puppy that Follows You Home written by Balaraba Ramat Yakubu and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. African & African American Studies. Translated from the Hausa by Aliyu Kamal. Beginning in the late 1980s, northern Nigeria saw a boom in popular fiction written in the Hausa language. Known as littattafan soyyaya ("love literature"), the books are often inspired by Hindi films, which have been hugely popular among Hausa speakers for decades and are primarily written by women. They have sparked a craze among young adult readers as well as a backlash from government censors and book-burning conservatives. SIN IS A PUPPY THAT FOLLOWS YOU HOME is an Islamic soap opera complete with polygamous households, virtuous women, scheming harlots, and black magic. "Utterly addictive... The main character's plight was so abysmal and her husband was such a lowdown a$ $, I was sure that by the end of the story, he'd get his and I wanted to be there to see it... Would I read more by this author? Heck yeah!" --Nnedi Okarafor "Blaft refers to Sin is a Puppy as a kind of "Islamic soap opera", and that isn't far off the mark. Balarama Ramat Yakubu's slim, fast-paced novel centres on Rabi, the long-suffering wife of one adulterous and wayward Alhaji Abdu. Rabi and Alhaji Abdu's elder daughter, Saudatu, of marriageable age and excellent, virtuous disposition, is a central character in a secondary story line that converges with the main. Although one does not want to give away the plot, suffice it to say that the trajectory of the novel's narrative will be familiar to those who have watched Hindi romance films, just with a twist... Blaft's foray into Nigerian popular literature is an intriguing, exciting project" --Subashini Navaratnam "Let us get the multiple meta-textual reasons for celebrating this book out of the way; it is a Hausa (Muslim, Black, Nigerian, African) woman writing for her peers, made accessible to us by desi publishers who find a glossary to be redundant. Kudos all round! But what did I actually think about the story of a woman (temporarily) leaving her abusive husband while her daughter finds a suitable boy (or rather, twice married man)? Dear reader, I was rather charmed by it... It is not heartwarming in the treacly manner of popular films, but instead, like the family histories your aunties tell you, full of compromises and small justices, and the "life goes on" approach to domestic tragedy. This is not a story of exotic Africa, nor of epochal moments in histories of colonialism and its aftermath, nor yet about the fetishized tensions of being Muslim. Instead, it is shopkeepers falling in love with women stopping to buy dress material, and mothers vacillating between the street being unsafe and being a good place to meet eligible men, and bored wives eyeing comely electricians summoned to fix the wiring. Let other books talk about purdah and polygamy; this is a book that concerns itself with soap" -- Deepa Dharmadhikari
