Book excerpt: A mathematical model for pulse propagation in a nonlinear fiber-optic communications line is presented where linear loss in the fiber is balanced by a chain of periodically-spaced, phase-sensitive amplifiers (PSAs). A multiple scale analysis is employed to average over the strong, rapidly-varying and periodic perturbations to the governing nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). The analysis indicates that the averaged evolution is governed by a fourth-order nonlinear diffusion equation which evolves on a length scale much greater than that of the typical soliton period. In a particular limit, stable steady-state hyperbolic secant solutions of the averaged equation are analytically found to exist provided a minimum amount of over-amplification is supplied. Further, arbitrary initial conditions within a wide stability region exponentially decay onto the steady-state. Outside of this analytic regime, extensive numerical simulations indicate that soliton-like steady-states exist and act as exponential attractors for a wide region of parameter space. These simulations also show that the averaged evolution is quite accurate in modeling the full NLS with loss and phase-sensitive gain. The bifurcation structure of the fourth-order equation is explored. A subcritical bifurcation from the trivial solution is found to occur for a specific over-amplification value. Further, a limit point, or fold, is also found which connects the stable branch of solutions with the unstable branch from the subcritical bifurcation. The bifurcation structure can be further explored in parameter space with the use of AUTO which is capable of tracking steady-state solutions for a wide range of parameters.

Book excerpt: This project focused on computer simulation in three major areas. The first two projects involve three-dimensional electro-magnetic simulation of the Maxwell equations. The third is quantum simulation via two-dimensional simulation of the Schroedinger equation. The first project resulted in a true three-dimensional simulation (of a pulse propagating in a nonlinear optical fiber. The second project resulted in a system for three-dimensional simulation of pulses propagating through conductive apertures for the purpose of THz pulse shaping. The quantum simulation resulted in two major milestones. First, a method has been developed to determine the eigenenergies and eigenfunctions of arbitrary quantum nanostructures. And second, the simulation of the interaction of two electrons in a quantum dot has been completed.

Book excerpt: Femtosecond pulse propagation in optical fibers requires consideration of higher-order nonlinear effects when implementing the non-linear Schroedinger equation. We show excellent agreement of our model with experimental results both for the temporal and phase features of the pulses. Ultrafast pulse propagation in optical fibers presents a number of challenges given the effect of nonlinearities which become important on such a short time scale. The modeling of femtosecond pulse propagation becomes, consequently, a harder task which has to account for all these effects. In this work, we have included higher order corrections in the non-linear Schroedinger equation and compared the numerical simulation results with experimental data. Our work, besides taking into account the temporal evolution of the pulse, keeps into account also the phase behavior of the electric field, which we compare with experimental results obtained with Frequency Resolved Optical Gating [l]. We also account for self-frequency shift of the pulse and obtain excellent agreement with the experimental results on the Raman shift.

Solitons can be found in hydrodynamics, nonlinear optics, plasma physics, and biology. Optical solitons are solitary light waves that hold their form over an expansive interval. Conservation of this form creates an effective model for long distance voice and data transmission. The application of this principle is essential to the technology of wired communications. Optical solitons produce crystal clear phone calls cross-country and internationally. It is because of these that someone on the other end of the phone sounds 'in the next room.' It is also pertinent to high-speed network information transmittal.Mollenauer and Gordon have written the only text that an engineer or graduate student will need to understand this foundation subject in optics. *Written by Linn Mollenauer and James Gordon who are celebrated for applying optical solitons to telecommnications*Combines mathematical developments with well-chosen practical examples and design formulas*Extensive material on the basic physics of fiber optic transmission and its practical applications

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work deals with theoretical aspects of pulse propagation. The core focus is on extreme, few-cycle pulses in optical fibers, pulses that are strongly affected by both dispersion and nonlinearity. Using Hamiltonian methods, we discuss how the meaning of pulse envelope changes, as pulses become shorter and shorter, and why an envelope equation can still be used. We also discuss how the standard set of dispersion coefficients yields useful rational approximations for the chromatic dispersion in optical fibers. Three more specific problems are addressed thereafter. First, we present an alternative framework for ultrashort pulses in which non-envelope propagation models are used. The approach yields the limiting, shortest solitons and reveals their universal features. Second, we describe how one can manipulate an ultrashort pulse, i.e., to change its amplitude and duration in a predictable manner. Quantitative theory of the manipulation is presented based on perturbation theory for solitons and analogy between classical fiber optics and quantum mechanics. Last but not least, we consider a recently found alternative to the standard split-step approach for numerical solutions of the pulse propagation equations.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this grant was to allow us to complete work that we had already begun on spun optical fibers and to begin studies of holey and photonic crystal optical fibers. The work on spun optical fibers was completed with great success. It led to several publications in collaboration with our co-workers at the Universita di Padova, and the student who carried out this work received a major award from the Universita di Padova. The work on holey and photonic crystal fibers has proceeded more slowly, but, in collaboration with Korean co-workers at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, we have developed three different computational models that allow us to calculate the modes of these fibers: a Galerkin model, a plane wave model, and a multipole model. We have applied these models to the study of mode coupling in periodic gratings. In collaboration with scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory, we have also applied these models to the study of pulse compression in tapered fibers and the development of nonlinear fibers that are capable of handling large powers in high-index and chalcogenide glasses. European and Asian countries have made large investments in the development of these new glass technologies, while the United States has not. As a consequence, the United States is falling behind in what we believe will prove to be a critical area of nanotechnology. It is our view that by investing in this project, the Department of Energy has helped lay the groundwork for future development of special fiber technology in the United States, once the decision has been made that the United States cannot continue to stand on the sidelines as this technology--which appears to have great commercial and military value--is developed elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the continuing and heightened interest in nonlinear semiconductor and optically integrated devices, more accurate and realistic numerical simulations of these devices and systems are in demand. Such calculations provide a testbed in which one can investigate new basic and engineering concepts, materials, and device configurations before they are fabricated. This encourages multiple concept and design iterations that result in enhanced performances and system integrations of those devices. They also provide a framework in which one can interpret complex experimental results and suggest further diagnostics or alternate protocols. Thus the time from device conceptualization to fabrication and testing could be enormously improved with numerical simulations that incorporate more realistic models of the linear and nonlinear material responses and the actual device geometries. The authors have successfully developed a finite difference time domain method that simulates the propagation of ultra-short optical pulses in nonlinear materials which can be described with a linear Lorentz dispersion model, an instantaneous nonlinear Kerr model and a retarded nonlinear Raman model. They have used this NL-FDTD method to model and characterize several ultra-short optical pulse configurations including linear and nonlinear optical waveguides that could be used as all-optical output couplers and beam steerers.

Book excerpt: Directed toward physicists and engineers interested in the device applications enabled by nonlinear optics, this text is suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Its content is presented entirely on a classical basis and requires only an elementary knowledge of quantum mechanics. The authors demonstrate how real laboratory situations can diverge from ideal theory, acquainting readers with the kinds of problems common to construction of a nonlinear device. They also offer a detailed discussion of the practical problems and characteristics of nonlinear materials, as well as the selection procedures necessary to ensure the use of good material. Their treatment begins with an introduction to the theories of linear and nonlinear optics, along with the basic ideas behind them. Succeeding chapters explore phase matching and nonlinear materials, followed by detailed treatments of second-harmonic generation, parametric up-conversion, and optical parametric amplification and oscillation. Appendixes offer a comprehensive list of materials and their properties; the text concludes with references and an index.
