Wave-body interactions have been studied for various ships and floating bodies through forced motion and free motion simulations in a wide range of wave frequencies. A three-dimensional Rankine panel method is applied to solve the boundary value problem for the wave-body interactions. The velocity potentials and normal velocities on the boundaries are obtained in the time domain by solving the mixed boundary integral equations in relation to the source and dipole distributions. The hydrodynamic forces are calculated by the integration of the instantaneous hydrodynamic pressures over the body surface. The equations of ship motion are solved simultaneously with the boundary value problem for each time step. The wave elevation is computed by applying the linear free surface conditions. A numerical damping zone is adopted to absorb the outgoing waves in order to satisfy the radiation condition for the truncated free surface. A numerical filter is applied on the free surface for the smoothing of the wave elevation. Good convergence has been reached for both forced motion simulations and free motion simulations. The computed added-mass and damping coefficients, wave exciting forces, and motion responses for ships and floating bodies are in good agreement with the numerical results from other programs and experimental data.

In this work, hydrodynamic forces & pressures due to radiated & diffracted waves are expressed as convolution products of a response function with either the velocity of ship motion or the wave elevation. The method significantly reduces the need for numerical evaluation of the time-domain Green function in the convolution of memory effects. The response functions of forces & pressures of radiated & diffracted waves are obtained by numerically solving the Fredholm integral equation of the first kind. In the equations of motion, maneuvering & rudder forces, radiation & diffraction forces, and non-linear restoring & Froude-Krylov forces are taken into account. Numerical examples are presented to compare computed & measured results.

Book excerpt: In this research, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach, based on the solution of the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations is used to study the classical ship hydrodynamic problems, all being affected markedly by the presence of free-surface, namely: ship resistance, propulsion, manoeuvring, seakeeping and stability, the latter focusing on flooding of a damaged ship. In this respect, this thesis represents a marked deviation from classical approaches and a unique contribution to ship dynamics and hydrodynamics. The RANS equations with SST K-w two-equation turbulence model and Volume Of Fluid (VOF) formulation were discretised by the finite volume (FV) method and the pressure-coupled governing equations were solved by the SIMPLE algorithm. The geometric reconstruction algorithm was adopted to locate transient free surfaces. The second order upwinding scheme was used for the discretisation of the convection flux and Multi-grid Acceleration was applied to improve convergence. In addressing ship resistance, grid sensitivity studies were carried out according to the "ITTC guideline of quality" manual. The computed results were verified and validated against available model test data. Additionally, the results of the effects of the turbulence models were investigated by comparing turbulence quantities predicted by SST K-w and RSM. In addressing ship propulsion, the propeller was modelled as an actuator disk of equivalent thrust and torque. Distributions of the body force were compared with results from a parametric study and the implementation of the body force approach was validated by model test data. In addressing ship manoeuvring, numerical PMM simulations of pure sway and yaw motions were performed. The numerical results were benchmarked against physical experiments. The computed hydrodynamic derivatives were compared with empirical formulae and subsequently implemented in manoeuvring simulations. In addressing seakeeping, incident waves were generated by a numerical wave maker and the computed results for wave diffraction were validated against physical measurements. Furthermore, RANS simulation for roll decay was undertaken and validated against results from model tests. Finally, a numerical roll tank was established to study the hydrodynamic coefficients of the roll motion in intact and damaged conditions and the corresponding results were compared with available model test data. In conclusion, systematic studies and ensuing results from numerical simulations of classical ship hydrodynamic problems using RANS demonstrated beyond doubt that CFD could and should play an important role in the design, analysis and evaluation of ship hydrodynamic performance. In addition, they provide unshakeable evidence of the level of capability to make the next important step: rendering CFD a routine "tool" in ship dynamics and hydrodynamics.

Validation and verification studies are carried out for the mesh convergence, time step convergence, sensitivity to turbulence models and dynamic mesh techniques. A quaternion-based 6DoF motion solver is implemented for the trim and sinkage predictions. Environmental effects on several inland vessels (convoy 1, convoy 2, tanker) are studied using the validated numerical models. Three important aspects, the confinement effect of the waterway, head-on encounter, and ship-bridge pile interaction are simulated. The testing conditions cover a wide range, including various channel dimensions, water depths, ship draughts and speeds. The ship resistance, wave pattern, Kelvin angle and wave elevation at specific positions are investigated as functions of these parameters. Ship maneuvering is investigated using virtual captive model tests based on the MMG (Mathematical Maneuvering Group) model. An actuator disk is implemented to replace the real propeller. Open water test, rudder force test, OTT (Oblique Towing Tank test) and CMT (Circular Motion Test) of a KVLCC2 model are carried out to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients of the propeller, rudder and ship hull. Using the obtained coefficients, system-based maneuvering simulations are carried out and validated using the free running test data. These studies reproduce real ship tests and thus prove the validity of our numerical models. As a result, the numerical solver is promising in ship hydrodynamics and marine engineering simulations"--

Book excerpt: In the traditional approach to the problems of ship maneuvering, on uses a set of linearized equations of motion that excludes the possibility that the hydrodynamic forces and moments might be affected by the history of the motion. Using ideas introduced by Cummins, one can obtain another linearized set of the equations of motion which contains a 'memory function' as well as the added mass and damping coefficients. These stability coefficients have been evaluated by an impulse-response techniques, a method that is new to ship maneuvering problems and that appears to represent a substantial improvement over the traditional regular-oscillatory-motion tests. Results from both experimental methods are presented for comparison. To examine the effect of the memory function upon predictions of standard ship maneuvers, predictions of a few standard maneuvers have been calculated using both sets of the linearized equations of motion. The differences between the predicted motions were found to be small for all the cases we examined. (Author).

Book excerpt: To predict the maneuvering performance of a propelled SPAR vessel, a mathematical model was established as a path simulator. A system-based mathematical model was chosen as it offers advantages in cost and time over full Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The model is intended to provide a means of optimizing the maneuvering performance of this new vessel type. In this study the hydrodynamic forces and control forces are investigated as individual components, combined in a vectorial setting, and transferred to a body-fixed basis. SPAR vessels are known to be very sensitive to large amplitude motions during maneuvers due to the relatively small hydrostatic restoring forces. Previous model tests of SPAR vessels have shown significant roll and pitch amplitudes, especially during course change maneuvers. Thus, a full 6 DOF equation of motion was employed in the current numerical model. The mathematical model employed in this study was a combination of the model introduced by the Maneuvering Modeling Group (MMG) and the Abkowitz (1964) model. The new model represents the forces applied to the ship hull, the propeller forces and the rudder forces independently, as proposed by the MMG, but uses a 6DOF equation of motion introduced by Abkowitz to describe the motion of a maneuvering ship. The mathematical model was used to simulate the trajectory and motions of the propelled SPAR vessel in 10 ̊/10 ̊, 20 ̊/20 ̊ and 30 ̊/30 ̊ standard zig-zag maneuvers, as well as turning circle tests at rudder angles of 20 ̊ and 30 ̊. The simulation results were used to determine the maneuverability parameters (e.g. advance, transfer and tactical diameter) of the vessel. The final model provides the means of predicting and assessing the performance of the vessel type and can be easily adapted to specific vessel configurations based on the generic SPAR-type vessel used in this study.
