This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Computed Tomography, and other image modalities are routinely used to visualize a particular structure in the patient's body. The classification of the image region corresponding to this structure is called segmentation. For applications in Neuroscience, it is important for the segmentation of a brain scan to represent the boundary of the brain as a single folded sheet. However the segmentation of the brain generally exhibits many erroneous holes. Consequently we have developed an algorithm for automatically removing holes in segmented medical scans while preserving the accuracy of the image. Upon concepts of Discrete Topology, we correct the holes based on the smallest modification to the image. First we detect each hole with a front propagation and a Reeb graph. Then we search for a number of loops around the hole on the isosurface of the image. Finally we select the loop that minimizes the modification to the image and correct the hole in the image. At each step we limit the size of the data in memory. With these contributions our algorithm removes every hole in the image with high accuracy and low complexity even for images that do not fit into the main memory. To help doctors and scientists to obtain segmentations without holes, we make our software publicly available.

Book excerpt: In the recent years, Independent Component Analysis has become a fundamental tool in signal and data processing, especially in the field of Blind Source Separation (BSS); under mild conditions, independent source signals can be recovered from mixtures of them by maximizing a so-called contrast function. Neither the mixing system nor the original sources are needed for that purpose, justifying the "blind" term. Among the existing BSS methods is the class of approaches maximizing Information-Theoretic Criteria (ITC), that rely on Rényi's entropies, including the well-known Shannon and Hartley entropies. These ITC are maximized via adaptive optimization schemes. Two major issues in this field are the following: i) Are ITC really contrast functions? and ii) As most of the algorithms look in fact for a local maximum point, what about the relevance of these local optima from the BSS point of view? Even though there are some partial answers to these questions in the literature, most of them are based on simulations and conjectures; formal developments are often lacking. This thesis aims at filling this lack as well as providing intuitive justifications, too. The BSS problem is stated in Chapter 1, and viewed under the information theory angle. The two next chapters address specifically the above questions: Chapter 2 discusses the contrast function property of ITC while the possible existence of spurious local maximum points in ITC is the purpose of Chapter 3. Finally, Chapter 4 deals with a range-based criterion, the only “entropy-based” contrast function which is discriminant, i.e. free from spurious local maxima. The interest of this approach is confirmed by testing the proposed technique on various examples, including the MLSP 2006 data analysis competition benchmark; our method outperforms the previously obtained results on large-scale and noisy mixture samples obtained through ill-conditioned mixing matrices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most physical problems can be written in the form of mathematical equations (differential, integral, etc.). Mathematicians have always sought to find analytical solutions to the equations encountered in the different sciences of the engineer (mechanics, physics, biology, etc.). These equations are sometimes complicated and much effort is required to simplify them. In the middle of the 20th century, the arrival of the first computers gave birth to new methods of resolution that will be described by numerical methods. They allow solving numerically as precisely as possible the equations encountered (resulting from the modeling of course) and to approach the solution of the problems posed. The approximate solution is usually computed on a computer by means of a suitable algorithm. The objective of this book is to introduce and study the basic numerical methods and those advanced to be able to do scientific computation. The latter refers to the implementation of approaches adapted to the treatment of a scientific problem arising from physics (meteorology, pollution, etc.) or engineering (structural mechanics, fluid mechanics, signal processing, etc.) .

Book excerpt: Connected objects today present a range of opportunities in medicine. We live in a new digital era where the monitoring and analysis of one's own health information no longer belongs solely to the realm of science fiction. The success of these new devices resides in their usage, which integrates seamlessly into the daily life of the user in order to continually collect the maximum amount of data. These medical connected devices therefore constitute a new hope in transforming user experience as well as the care pathway. They offer a better level of support and a better quality of life for those suffering from chronic illnesses or mental, sensorial or physical disabilities. However, these solutions also pose systematic problems, especially regarding the risks linked to their usage. This book presents a cartography which clearly details all the potential risk scenarios linked to the usage of connected devices as well as the actions which should be undertaken to promote balanced governance and guarantee the development of high-quality medical devices. - Aims to help the reader understand the difference between a connected object and a medical connected device - Identifies and evaluates all the potential risks and perspectives associated with the use of connected medical devices - Shows how to make a comprehensive risk analysis with standards like ISO 31000 and 14971

Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, Markoosie Patsauq, then a bush pilot in his late twenties living in the tiny, isolated High Arctic community of Resolute, spent his spare time quietly writing a story that effectively emerged as the first Indigenous novel released in Canada. Published in English under the title Harpoon of the Hunter in 1970 by McGill-Queen's University Press, that version of the story was Patsauq's own adaptation. In the years that followed the widely acclaimed English edition was translated into many different languages, but what has remained obscured until the present day is the Inuktitut text originally produced by the author. In collaboration with Patsauq, Valerie Henitiuk and Marc-Antoine Mahieu have foregrounded the original Inuktitut text to inform their translations into both English and French. This critical edition, complete with the story in both Inuktitut syllabics and Latin script, utilizes the author's handwritten manuscript as well as interviews with Patsauq to produce a new, rigorous examination of this literary and cultural milestone. This work also includes the first comprehensive account of the critical response to his writing while underscoring the way the much-altered English adaptation from 1970 shaped that response. A momentous achievement that situates a new classic in the twenty-first century, Hunter with Harpoon brings readers back to the roots of Markoosie Patsauq's Inuit story to experience it as it was originally written.

Book excerpt: The safe and reliable operation of technical systems is of great significance for the protection of human life and health, the environment, and of the vested economic value. The correct functioning of those systems has a profound impact also on production cost and product quality. The early detection of faults is critical in avoiding performance degradation and damage to the machinery or human life. Accurate diagnosis then helps to make the right decisions on emergency actions and repairs. Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) has developed into a major area of research, at the intersection of systems and control engineering, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics and statistics, and such application fields as chemical, electrical, mechanical and aerospace engineering. IFAC has recognized the significance of FDD by launching a triennial symposium series dedicated to the subject. The SAFEPROCESS Symposium is organized every three years since the first symposium held in Baden-Baden in 1991. SAFEPROCESS 2006, the 6th IFAC Symposium on Fault Detection, Supervision and Safety of Technical Processes was held in Beijing, PR China. The program included three plenary papers, two semi-plenary papers, two industrial talks by internationally recognized experts and 258 regular papers, which have been selected out of a total of 387 regular and invited papers submitted. * Discusses the developments and future challenges in all aspects of fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control * 8 invited and 36 contributed sessions included with a special session on the demonstration of process monitoring and diagnostic software tools
