Book excerpt: Land development transforms the natural landscape and impacts in stream ecosystems and downstream communities as it alters the natural flow regime. An increase in impervious areas results in higher volumes of storm water runoff, reduced time to peak, and more frequent flooding. Best Management Practices (BMP) and Low Impact development (LID) are a few of the set of measures which are used to mitigate the impact of urbanization. Peak flow, runoff volume are few of the conventional metrics which are used to evaluate the impact and performance of these storm water management strategies on the watershed. BMP are majorly used to control the flood runoff but results in the release of large volumes of runoff even after the flood wave passed the reach and LIDs are used to replicate the natural flow regime by controlling the runoff at the source. Therefore need to incorporate a metric which includes the timing and area being inundated needs to be considered to study the impact of these strategies on the downstream. My proposed research will focus on simulating the Low Impact Development (LID) techniques like permeable pavements and rainwater harvesting on an urbanized watershed using a curve number approach to quantify the hydrologic performance of these strategies on the watershed. LID, BMPs, and combined strategies are introduced for retrofitting existing conditions and their hydrologic performance is accessed based on the peak flow and a new metric Hydrologic Footprint Residence. A simulation optimization framework would be developed which identifies cost effective LID options that maximize the reduction of peak flow from the existing condition design storms while meeting budget restrictions. Further LID and BMP placement is included in the optimization model to study the impact of the combined scenario on the storm water management plans and their performance based on different storms and corresponding budget. Therefore a tradeoff can be illustrated between the implementation cost and the hydrological impact on the watershed based on the storm water management approach of using only LID and combination of LID and BMP corresponding to varied spectrum of design storm events.

This system guides water to a structural soil retention area beneath the pavement where it is then temporary stored. BMPs are based of rainwater withholding (such as infiltration basins) or infiltration into the soil (such as permeable pavement). In this project we are to create a stormwater management model for campus using a modeling software for the purpose of guiding future BMP types and locations by predicting different scenarios' efficiency based on runoff water reduction.

Book excerpt: The modification of land and water resources for human use alters the natural hydrologic flow regime of a downstream receiving body of water. The natural flow regime is essential for sustaining biotic structure and equilibrium within the ecosystem. A typical approach to achieve a hydrologically friendly development is to locate and design stormwater control structures, or Best Management Practices (BMPs), to match peak and minimum flows for design storms. A more aggressive strategy for environmentally sustainable development would ensure that there is no difference between pre- and post-development flow regimes for all storms and at all times through the design of development strategies that maintain the natural flow regime under post-development conditions at the watershed outlet. Many sub-catchments contribute to the composite flow at the watershed outlet of a large watershed, and at each of these sub-catchments, the flow regime may be altered, though the flow regime is maintained at the larger watershed level. This study uses a simulation-optimization modeling framework to analyze a hydrologic metric that represents the total degree of hydrologic alteration for a given development pattern. The objective is to minimize the hydrologic alteration by iteratively updating and modifying the development pattern in the watershed subject to maintaining some pre-defined minimum level of total development. Thirty-three hydrologic indices are used to characterize variation in the flow regime and are represented as one value indicating the hydrologic alteration for that development scenario. Continuous simulation of urban runoff is executed by the Stormwater Management Model (SWMM). Two optimization techniques, Nelder Meade (NM) and Genetic Algorithm (GA), are applied to the watershed as separate search techniques and then combined into a hybrid approach to investigate the methodology.
