Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A work that reveals the profound links between the evolution, acquisition, and processing of language, and proposes a new integrative framework for the language sciences. Language is a hallmark of the human species; the flexibility and unbounded expressivity of our linguistic abilities is unique in the biological world. In this book, Morten Christiansen and Nick Chater argue that to understand this astonishing phenomenon, we must consider how language is created: moment by moment, in the generation and understanding of individual utterances; year by year, as new language learners acquire language skills; and generation by generation, as languages change, split, and fuse through the processes of cultural evolution. Christiansen and Chater propose a revolutionary new framework for understanding the evolution, acquisition, and processing of language, offering an integrated theory of how language creation is intertwined across these multiple timescales. Christiansen and Chater argue that mainstream generative approaches to language do not provide compelling accounts of language evolution, acquisition, and processing. Their own account draws on important developments from across the language sciences, including statistical natural language processing, learnability theory, computational modeling, and psycholinguistic experiments with children and adults. Christiansen and Chater also consider some of the major implications of their theoretical approach for our understanding of how language works, offering alternative accounts of specific aspects of language, including the structure of the vocabulary, the importance of experience in language processing, and the nature of recursive linguistic structure.

Book excerpt: For health-conscious pet owners, a natural, holistic guide to getting every canine back to his best, most primal state From the tiniest teacup poodle to the most massive Great Dane, dogs' digestive systems are pure wolf. Fido's ancestors enjoyed a diet that was 45–50 percent protein, 40–50 percent fat, and less than 10 percent carbohydrates. Walk down the pet food aisle, however, and you'll find that typical commercial kibble is made mainly of starchy ingredients like peas, potatoes, corn, wheat, rice, and oats—nothing a prehistoric pup would dream of eating. This "healthy" mix is proving anything but: About 85 percent of dogs eat commercial dog food, and at least half of them are overweight or obese, with cancer killing 42 percent of all dogs and half of dogs over the age of 10. So how do you feed a wolf disguised as a pug? Paleo Dog guides readers through an assessment of their dogs' diet and helps them find the right balance of healthy ingredients. In addition to recipes and nutrition info, the book offers advice on what treats are safe, training tips, minimizing veterinary care, the benefits of exercise and massage, and how to ensure dogs are receiving the love and attention they need. Paleo Dog is the ultimate manual for any pet owner who wants to give her pet the longest and best quality of life.

Should I buy from a breeder or adopt from a rescue? I brought my Bulldog home. What now? How can I best train my Bulldog? What are some common mistakes should I avoid? Whether you are a veteran or novice Bulldog owner, there will be something for everyone in this book. Chapters include all the basics such as: A Unique Look – The Bulldog Breed History and Characteristics The Ideal Home Finding Your Bulldog Preparing for Your Puppy The First Week The First Month Housetraining Socialization and Experience Being a Bulldog Parent Living with other dogs Training Your Bulldog Basic Commands Nutrition Grooming – Productive Bonding Basic Health Care Health Concerns Your Aging Bulldog That unforgettable face has always hidden the absolutely darling dog’s real potential. Bulldogs are not a high-energy dog, but not all of them are couch potatoes either. Bulldogs are shockingly intelligent as well, which often takes people by complete surprise (if they are basing their opinion of the dog purely on looks). One of the reasons people are so familiar with Bulldogs is that this is a breed that is considered intimidating – simply based on their looks. This has made them one of the most popular mascots in the world. They are the face of high schools, colleges, and universities, as well as sports teams. They make great mascots because they love people and don’t mind being the center of attention. As a fairly low maintenance dog, they are great for families of nearly every type. They can be fairly stubborn, but with a loving and consistent approach, they will quickly come to understand the benefits of behaving. That high intellect also means that if your Bulldog has the desire, they can be great in competitions such as Obedience and Agility. Of course, if you prefer a couch potato, many of them love that too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Homo sapiens sapiens met Canis lupus lupus millennia ago, the result was Canis lupus familiaris, the domestic dog. Since that fateful encounter, the dog has become, arguably, humankind’s greatest creation. The domestic dog is the most widely distributed species (other than ourselves) in the world, being found virtually wherever people live, and is also the most diversified of species, with literally hundreds of recognized breeds. While we have shaped the dog, it, too, has helped shape human history in innumerable ways. Our Debt to the Dog is a critical historical and cross-cultural examination, through the use of case studies, of this most improbable 15,000-year relationship and an exploration of how this relationship shaped the history of the world. It is also very much an apology to the dog because over the course of the partnership horrific acts were perpetrated against it intentionally and otherwise. Our Debt to the Dog enriches our understanding of the dog and extends our appreciation for the profound complexity of past and present human-canine relationships and the dog’s contributions to our lives and our world.

Book excerpt: The intriguing question in the title comes from an inscription on the collar of a dog Alexander Pope gave to the Prince of Wales. When Pope wrote the famous couplet “I am his Highness’ Dog at Kew, / Pray tell me Sir, whose Dog are You?” the question was received as an expression of loyalty. That was an era before there were dog breeds and, not coincidentally, before people were generally believed to develop affectionate bonds with dogs. This interdisciplinary study focuses on the development of dog breeds in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Beginning with the Foxhound—the first modern breed—it examines the aesthetic, political, and technological forces that generate modern human-canine relations. These forces have colluded over the past two hundred years to impose narrow descriptions of human-canine relations and to shape the dogs physically into acceptable and recognizable breeds. The largest question in animal studies today—how alterity affects human-animal relations—cannot fully be considered until the two approaches to this question are understood as complements of one another: one beginning from aesthetics, the other from technology. Most of all, the book asks if we can engage with dogs in ways that allow them to remain dogs.
