They are mostly used as constant-speed drives when fed from a voltage source of fixed frequency. Advent of advanced power electronic converters and powerful digital signal processors, however, has made possible the development of high performance, adjustable speed AC motor drives. This book aims to explore new areas of induction motor control based on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in order to make the controller less sensitive to parameter changes. Selected AI techniques are applied for different induction motor control strategies. The book presents a practical computer simulation model of the induction motor that could be used for studying various induction motor drive operations. The control strategies explored include expert-system-based acceleration control, hybrid-fuzzy/PI two-stage control, neural-network-based direct self control, and genetic algorithm based extended Kalman filter for rotor speed estimation. There are also chapters on neural-network-based parameter estimation, genetic-algorithm-based optimized random PWM strategy, and experimental investigations. A chapter is provided as a primer for readers to get started with simulation studies on various AI techniques. Book excerpt: Conventional controllers like the proportional integral differential (PID) would have being very effective not just for speed control alone, if not for some complexities with individually controlling its respective controllers and summing up their individual contributions to effectively yield controlled signal output. Also, for its insensitivity to changes made to model parameters which may be as a result of misrepresentation of some control variables. As a result of this, developing an intelligent based fuzzy logic controller (FLC) became eminent, and on this basis, this book is written. By varying the motor speed with input reference speed, an error signal and a feedback loop is generated. The FLC then operates on the principles of mapping with corrective measure of the error signal generated and it is regulated by sets of IF-THEN rules integrating the Mamdani fuzzy inference approach. The rules projected and formed are used to overcome the drawbacks of conventional controllers. Since induction motors are widely used in many industries today, most especially squirrel caged, an intelligent approach to the control of these motors will save cost, increase reliability and efficiency

Book excerpt: After a brief introduction to the main law of physics and fundamental concepts inherent in electromechanical conversion, Vector Control of Induction Machines introduces the standard mathematical models for induction machines – whichever rotor technology is used – as well as several squirrel-cage induction machine vector-control strategies. The use of causal ordering graphs allows systematization of the design stage, as well as standardization of the structure of control devices. Vector Control of Induction Machines suggests a unique approach aimed at reducing parameter sensitivity for vector controls based on a theoretical analysis of this sensitivity. This analysis naturally leads to the introduction of control strategies that are based on the combination of different controls with different robustness properties, through the use of fuzzy logic supervisors. Numerous applications and experiments confirm the validity of this simple solution, which is both reproducible and applicable to other complex systems. Vector Control of Induction Machines is written for researchers and postgraduate students in electrical engineering and motor drive design.

Book excerpt: The Field Orientation Principle was fIrst formulated by Haase, in 1968, and Blaschke, in 1970. At that time, their ideas seemed impractical because of the insufficient means of implementation. However, in the early eighties, technological advances in static power converters and microprocessor-based control systems made the high-performance a. c. drive systems fully feasible. Since then, hundreds of papers dealing with various aspects of the Field Orientation Principle have appeared every year in the technical literature, and numerous commercial high-performance a. c. drives based on this principle have been developed. The term "vector control" is often used with regard to these systems. Today, it seems certain that almost all d. c. industrial drives will be ousted in the foreseeable future, to be, in major part, superseded by a. c. drive systems with vector controlled induction motors. This transition has already been taking place in industries of developed countries. Vector controlled a. c. drives have been proven capable of even better dynamic performance than d. c. drive systems, because of higher allowable speeds and shorter time constants of a. c. motors. It should be mentioned that the Field Orientation Principle can be used in control not only of induction (asynchronous) motors, but of all kinds of synchronous motors as well. Vector controlled drive systems with the so called brushless d. c. motors have found many applications in high performance drive systems, such as machine tools and industrial robots.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fuzzy logic controller has been developed and simluated on an indirect vector control of an induction motor (IVCIM) drive system. The objective of the indirect vector control is to convert the three-phase induction motor into a linear device where the torque and the flux in the motor can be controlled independently. The induction motor is fed by a current-controlled PWM inverter. The proposed fuzzy speed controller block in a vector controlled drive system observes the pattern of the speed loop error signal and correspondingly updates its output, so that the actual speed matches the command speeds. The design of the fuzzy controller starts with identifying the inputs, performing the membership functions for the two inputs of the FLC and ends at manipulating the final command signal to the current regulator which triggers the inverter. The fuzzy logic toolbox has been used to build the fuzzy inference system (FIS) which is the dynamo of the fuzzy logic controller. The proposed FLC controller has been designed to meet the speed tracking requirements under a step change in speed and load changes. The proposed FLC drive dynamic performance has been investigated and tested under different operating conditions by simulation in the Simuling/Matlab software environment. In order to prove the superiority of the FLC, a conventional PI controller based IM drive system has also been simulated. The simulation results obtained have proved the very good performance and robustness of the proposed FLC. It is concluded that the proposed fuzzy logic controller has shown superior performances over the conventional PI controller.

A single notation and modern nonlinear control terminology is used to make the book accessible, although a more theoretical control viewpoint is also given. Focusing on the induction motor with, the concepts of stability and nonlinear control theory given in appendices, this book covers: speed sensorless control; design of adaptive observers and parameter estimators; a discussion of nonlinear adaptive controls containing parameter estimation algorithms; and comparative simulations of different control algorithms. The book sets out basic assumptions, structural properties, modelling, state feedback control and estimation algorithms, then moves to more complex output feedback control algorithms, based on stator current measurements, and modelling for speed sensorless control. The induction motor exhibits many typical and unavoidable nonlinear features.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a methodology for implementation of a rule based fuzzy logic controller applied to a closed loop volts/hertz single phase induction motor speed control. The induction motor is modelled by using d-q axis theory. The performance of FLC is compared with that of a PI controller. The advantages of the Fuzzy Logic Controller over the conventional controllers are : (i) they are economically advantageous to develop, (ii) a wider range of operating conditions can be covered using FLCs, and initial approximate set of fuzzy rules can be impulsively refined by a self-organizing fuzzy controller. For volts/hertz speed control of the single phase induction motor, a reference speed has been used and the control architecture includes some rules. The errors are evaluated according to the rules in accordance to the defined member functions. The member functions and the rules have been defined using the Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) editor given in Matlab. The system has been simulated in Matlab / Simulink and the results are given. Provide briefing results, analysis and discussed.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-phase induction motors have been used in a wide range of industry applications; since they are robust, brushless and have simple design. Furthermore, the speed of induction motor can be easily controlled by variable frequency drives. The continuous development in power electronics semiconductors came out with modern electric drives. These drives use high speed power transistors, like IGBT and MOSFET, with various switching techniques. The speed control of induction motor is important to achieve maximum torque and efficiency. In the past decades, conventional control systems, such as proportional-integral derivative (PID) controller, were applied to electric drives to control the speed of induction motor. The PID controller is not a well established control method in motor drive because of the nonlinearity of induction motor. On the other hand, the use of Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) improves the performance of the speed control of induction motor. In this research, a microcontroller-based fuzzy logic controller was developed. The FLC replaces the conventional PI controller to improve the speed response of the drive in order to keep the speed of the induction motor constant when the load varies within the operating range. The research also included the design and implementation of a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) driven by Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) signal. The control system in this research was designed using Matlab/Simulink environment. The simulation included a comparison of speed response of FLC and PI controller. The input to FLC is the linguistic variable of speed error and change of speed error, while the output of FLC is the frequency fed to the inverter. The three-phase inverter was fabricated using MOSFET Hex-bridge connected to a low-pass LC-filter to smooth the inverter output voltage wave. In order to apply FLC and generate corresponding SVPWM signals a PIC16F877A microcontroller was used in the control system. The speed controller was tested using various values of input speed using simulation and experiments. The results showed the superiority of the proposed FLC over the conventional PI controller in the dynamics response of speed. The results also showed the ability of the proposed to generate a three-phase sine wave with desired frequency to control the speed of the induction motor with THD less than 5%.

Book excerpt: "Among various ac motors, induction motor (IM) occupies almost 90% of the industrial drives due to its simple, robust construction and generally satisfactory efficiency as compared to dc motor. However, the control of IM is complex due to its nonlinear nature and the parameters change with operating conditions. Since 1980s, field orientation principle (FOP) has been used for high performance control of IM. Due to the well-known drawbacks of the fixed-gain proportional-integral (PI), proportional-integral-derivative (PID) and various adaptive controllers, over the last two decades researchers have been working to apply artificial intelligent controller (AIC) for IM drives due to its advantages as compared to the conventional PI, PID and adaptive controllers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper presents a fuzzy logic-based speed controller for scalar controlled closed loop Volts/Hz Induction Motor (IM) drive with slip regulation. The IM is modeled in terms of dq windings, with synchronous frame associated with the frequency w(s) of the stator excitation. The two inputs to the Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) are the linguistic variables of speed error and change of speed error, while the output is the frequency change. They are also compared with traditional Proportional-Integral (PI) controller and without controller. The results validate the effectiveness of the proposed FLC for scalar controlled (or) Volts/Hz IM drive which is considered as a highly nonlinear dynamic complex systems. Matlab/Simulink software was used to simulate the proposed model.
