Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because estimation involves inferring information about an unknown quantity on the basis of available data, the selection of an estimator is influenced by its ability to perform well under the conditions that are assumed to underlie the data. Since these conditions are never known exactly, the estimators chosen must be robust; i.e., they must be able to perform well under a variety of underlying conditions. The theory of robust estimation is based on specified properties of specified estimators under specified conditions. This book was written as the result of a study undertaken to establish the interaction of these three components over as large a range as possible. Originally published in 1972. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three volumes constitute the edited Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work held at the University of Calgary from July 29 to August 10, 1974. The general title of the volumes is "Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work". The individual volumes are: Volume 1 - Models and Structures; Volume 2 - Model Building and Model Selection; and Volume 3 - Characterizations and Applications. These correspond to the three advanced seminars of the Institute devoted to the respective subject areas. The planned activities of the Institute consisted of main lectures and expositions, seminar lectures and study group dis cussions, tutorials and individual study. The activities included meetings of editorial committees to discuss editorial matters for these proceedings which consist of contributions that have gone through the usual refereeing process. A special session was organized to consider the potential of introducing a course on statistical distributions in scientific modeling in the curriculum of statistics and quantitative studies. This session is reported in Volume 2. The overall perspective for the Institute is provided by the Institute Director, Professor G. P. Patil, in his inaugural address which appears in Volume 1. The Linnik Memorial Inaugural Lecture given by Professor C. R. Rao for the Characterizations Seminar is included in Volume 3.

Book Synopsis Robustness in Statistics by : Robert L. Launer
Download or read book Robustness in Statistics written by Robert L. Launer and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robustness in Statistics contains the proceedings of a Workshop on Robustness in Statistics held on April 11-12, 1978, at the Army Research Office in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The papers review the state of the art in statistical robustness and cover topics ranging from robust estimation to the robustness of residual displays and robust smoothing. The application of robust regression to trajectory data reduction is also discussed. Comprised of 14 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to robust estimation, paying particular attention to iteration schemes and error structure of estimators. Sensitivity and influence curves as well as their connection with jackknife estimates are described. The reader is then introduced to a simple analog of trimmed means that can be used for studying residuals from a robust point-of-view; a class of robust estimators (called P-estimators) based on the location and scale-invariant Pitman estimators of location; and robust estimation in the presence of outliers. Subsequent chapters deal with robust regression and its use to reduce trajectory data; tests for censoring of extreme values, especially when population distributions are incompletely defined; and robust estimation for time series autoregressions. This monograph should be of interest to mathematicians and statisticians.
Book Synopsis The Practice of Data Analysis by : David R. Brillinger
Download or read book The Practice of Data Analysis written by David R. Brillinger and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays brings together many of the world's most distinguished statisticians to discuss a wide array of the most important recent developments in data analysis. The book honors John W. Tukey, one of the most influential statisticians of the twentieth century, on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. Contributors, some of them Tukey's former students, use his general theoretical work and his specific contributions to Exploratory Data Analysis as the point of departure for their papers. They cover topics from "pure" data analysis, such as gaussianizing transformations and regression estimates, and from "applied" subjects, such as the best way to rank the abilities of chess players or to estimate the abundance of birds in a particular area. Tukey may be best known for coining the common computer term "bit," for binary digit, but his broader work has revolutionized the way statisticians think about and analyze sets of data. In a personal interview that opens the book, he reviews these extraordinary contributions and his life with characteristic modesty, humor, and intelligence. The book will be valuable both to researchers and students interested in current theoretical and practical data analysis and as a testament to Tukey's lasting influence. The essays are by Dhammika Amaratunga, David Andrews, David Brillinger, Christopher Field, Leo Goodman, Frank Hampel, John Hartigan, Peter Huber, Mia Hubert, Clifford Hurvich, Karen Kafadar, Colin Mallows, Stephan Morgenthaler, Frederick Mosteller, Ha Nguyen, Elvezio Ronchetti, Peter Rousseeuw, Allan Seheult, Paul Velleman, Maria-Pia Victoria-Feser, and Alessandro Villa. Book Synopsis Order Statistics by : Herbert A. David
Download or read book Order Statistics written by Herbert A. David and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-03-22 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an up-to-date coverage of the theory and applications of ordered random variables and their functions. Furthermore, it develops the distribution theory of OS systematically. Applications include procedures for the treatment of outliers and other data analysis techniques. Even when chapter and section headings are the same as in OSII, there are appreciable changes, mostly additions, with some obvious deletions. Parts of old Ch. 7, for example, are prime candidates for omission. Appendices are designed to help collate tables, computer algorithms, and software, as well as to compile related monographs on the subject matter. Extensive exercise sets will continue, many of them replaced by newer ones.

Book Synopsis Robust Statistical Procedures by : Peter J. Huber
Download or read book Robust Statistical Procedures written by Peter J. Huber and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a brief, well-organized, and easy-to-follow introduction and overview of robust statistics. Huber focuses primarily on the important and clearly understood case of distribution robustness, where the shape of the true underlying distribution deviates slightly from the assumed model (usually the Gaussian law). An additional chapter on recent developments in robustness has been added and the reference list has been expanded and updated from the 1977 edition.
