This volume is organized into two sections: (i) Pathophysiologic Mechanisms of Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury and (ii) Preconditioning and Protection of Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury, and contains up-to-date information concerning the current concepts of ischemia-reperfusion injury, the sequence of events resulting in the loss of contractile dysfunction, and mechanisms of cardioprotection by several drugs as well as the role of ischemic preconditioning in attenuating problems associated with ischemia-reperfusion injury.
Download or read book Dark Hearts written by Shanaga Brown and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dark Hearts By: Shanaga Brown “Kindness is never a burden, it is a blessing.” In a small fishing village on the west coast of Jamaica, Shanaga Brown shares her experiences as a young girl growing up surrounded by natural beauty and the hard realities of rural Jamaican life. At a young age, Brown becomes closely attached to her autistic sister, June, who, as a result of her differences, was exposed to the harshest treatment Jamaica had to offer. At once raw and unrelenting in its social commentary, Dark Hearts is a true story, an honest and forthcoming rendition of many unspoken truths and Brown’s love for a sister who became the scorn of a village community too dark to understand the angel amongst them.
Book Synopsis Neonatal Heart Disease by : Robert M. Freedom
Download or read book Neonatal Heart Disease written by Robert M. Freedom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 877 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As pediatric cardiology becomes more and more neonatal cardiology and even fetal cardiology, Neonatal Heart Disease by Robert M. Freedom, MO, Leland N. Benson, MD, and Jeffrey F. Smallhorn, MB is extraordinarily timely. Neonatal Heart Disease consists of 50 chapters by 25 distinguished contributors and is a worthy successor to The Neonate With Congenital Heart Disease by Richard D. Rowe, MD and his colleagues (1968 and 1981). The first ~dition of this book in 1968 established Richard D. Rowe, MD as the father of neonatal cardiology. As most pediatric cardiologists now know, Dick Rowe died on January 18, 1988 after a brief illness. It will therefore come as no surprise that the present volume is dedicated to this great and gentle man. Nor will it come as a surprise that I have been asked to devote this Foreword to Richard D. Rowe, MD, pioneering neonatal cardiologist and incomparable personal friend. What can one say about Dick Rowe? Well, there are at least two very different tales. There is Dick Rowe the public man -the factual account of Dick Rowe's achievements as a physician, educator, and research man - the Dick Rowe that virtually "everyone" knows. And then there is Dick Rowe the private man -the extraordinary human being who only his personal friends were privileged to know. I shall try to tell something of both stories. First, the public man - the factual account - is really quite amazing.
Book Synopsis Catecholamines and the Heart by : W. Delius
Download or read book Catecholamines and the Heart written by W. Delius and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An International Symposium "Catecholamines and the Heart" was held in Munich in May 1981, which was organized in cooperation with the Council on Cardiac Metabolism of the International Society and Federation of Cardiology and with the Microcirculation Working Group of the European Society of Cardiology. It was the aim of the organizers to evaluate in this Symposium the recent advances made in the field of sympathetic control of heart function. Particular attention was given to neural sympathetic pathways, to mechanisms and consequences of adrenoceptor stimulation and blockade as well as to clinically relevant implications mainly regarding the significance of catecholamines and of adrenoceptors in various heart diseases. The broad scope was covered in 34 papers presented by physiologists, pharmacologists and cardiologists during a two day meeting which was attended by an international audience. This book includes all papers as well as the discussions following each presentation. To accomplish rapid publication the manuscripts are published as submitted by the authors. The discussions were edited making use of the written questions and answers of the discussants. The Symposium was generously sponsored by Astra Chemicals GmbH, Wedell Holstein, Germany, which thus made possible a very fruitful exchange of information, ideas and concepts between specialists in various disciplines. The organizers gratefully acknowledge this support once again and would like to thank Dr. T. Kreuzer, the representative of Astra Chemicals, for his personal engagement.

Book Synopsis Emerging Technologies for Heart Diseases by : Udi Nussinovitch
Download or read book Emerging Technologies for Heart Diseases written by Udi Nussinovitch and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing pace of advances in cardiology throughout the last few decades has fundamentally altered the natural course of heart patients. In the last few years, available therapies have been revolutionized completely by new transcatheter therapeutic approaches, novel ventricular assist devices, and new drugs. Also, molecular biology and genetics have a rapidly growing impact on cardiovascular diseases, enabling the field of regenerative medicine to become increasingly closer to routine clinical implementation. Emerging Technologies for Heart Diseases was conceived to cover the recent extensive literature on current and novel therapeutic options for cardiac patients. The first volume is dedicated to heart failure and valvular disorders, and the second covers myocardial ischemia and arrhythmias. The clinical topic is addressed in several chapters divided according to the therapeutic approach (mechanical or electrical device-based, or cell and gene-based). Each of the 46 chapters focuses on clinically available solutions, new therapies currently under evaluation in clinical trials, promising preclinical technologies, and emerging concepts and innovations that have not yet been tested in a preclinical model. Also, the book discusses future challenges and opportunities for clinical implementation. Lessons learned from abandoned experimental practices are also covered, giving the readers the widest possible perspective of current therapeutic dilemmas. Overall, this textbook was designed for physicians who want to stay up-to-date with current therapies and those of the future, for biomedical companies, and for those who wish to broaden their knowledge of new cardiovascular therapeutic options. - Provides a comprehensive review of the latest therapeutic developments for heart failure, valvular disorders, myocardial ischemia and arrhythmias, and their clinical implications - Written by both specialists in the field and established researchers, it delivers a review of emerging medical technologies and presents insight into their therapeutic promise - Chapters are arranged according to disease pathogeneses and relevance and include coverage of the mechanical, electrophysiological, and biological approaches for the management of patients with myocardial ischemia and arrhythmias

Download or read book Vedamrut written by Vinoba Bhave and published by Sarva Seva Sangh Prakashan. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vinoba was a devout person. He was spirituality personified. His rigorous effort to explore and unearth the hidden values of these ancient scriptures led him to select one eight of the entire Rig-veda which contained its in-depth meaning. This was brought out in a book-form under the title 'Rig-veda-Sar (The essence of Rig-veda). Just few days before the end of his earthly sojourn, Vinoba underlined the importance of the selected eighty-three mantras (verses) from 'Rig-veda Sar' and suggested regular recitation of these mantras along with 'Gitai' (the Marathi rendition of the Bhagwad Gita). The publisher found his comments on some of them scattered in his voluminous literary works. These comments have been compiled and edited into a book titled 'Vedamrut' in Hindi and now translated in English. This is a small book, rich in spiritual wisdom handed down by one who exemplified the tradition of the Vedic seers in this modern material age. It is certain that even a small drop of this wisdom will benefit every one of us in our spiritual quest.
Book Synopsis Cellular and Molecular Alterations in the Failing Human Heart by : Hansjörg Just
Download or read book Cellular and Molecular Alterations in the Failing Human Heart written by Hansjörg Just and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myocardium in heart failure: Cellular and subcellular alterations in the failing human myocardium. H. Just Medizinische Universitatsklinik Freiburg i. Br., Innere Medizin III - Kardiologie, FRG The syndrome of heart failure continues to be a major challenge to clinicians and scientists. Incidence and mortality of the disease are high, the patient is disabled, and is permanently threatened by the high morbidity and mortality. The clinician faces a syndrome of complex pathophysiology. Multiple causes or underlying disorders of the heart have to be differentiated from heart failure itself, which often results in exceedingly difficult diagnoses. Likewise, prognostication meets with difficulties due to problems in separating influences of the underlying disease and the heart failure syndrome itself. In chronic refractory failure annual mortality may exceed 50%. If aortic stenosis or ischemic cardiomyopathy with main stem lesions are present, this percentage may be even higher. The situation becomes particularly threatening to the patient when the reduction in cardiac performance goes along with complex ventricular arrhythmias. Therapy has remained difficult and of limited effectiveness. Major progress was achieved with the introduction of diuretic substances. Of similar importance was the introduction of va so dilating drugs into the treatment of heart failure. The principle of vasodilation has greatly improved our understanding of the disease, and has brought about a major improvement of symptoms, increase of exercise capacity, and reduc tion of mortality. This is especially true for the introduction of the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.
Book Synopsis Living Morphogenesis of the Heart by : Roger Markwald
Download or read book Living Morphogenesis of the Heart written by Roger Markwald and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall scope of this new series will be to evolve an understanding of the genetic basis of (1) how early mesoderm commits to cells of a heart lineage that progres sively and irreversibly assemble into a segmented, primary heart tube that can be remodeled into a four-chambered organ, and (2) how blood vessels are derived and assembled both in the heart and in the body. Our central aim is to establish a four-dimensional, spatiotemporal foundation for the heart and blood vessels that can be genetically dissected for function and mechanism. Since Robert DeHaan's seminal chapter "Morphogenesis of the Vertebrate Heart" published in Organogenesis (Holt Rinehart & Winston, NY) in 1965, there have been surprisingly few books devoted to the subject of cardiovascular morpho genesis, despite the enormous growth of interest that occurred nationally and internationally. Most writings on the subject have been scholarly compilations of the proceedings of major national or international symposia or muItiauthored volumes, often without a specific theme. What is missing are the unifying concepts that can make sense out of a burgeoning database of facts. The Editorial Board of this new series believes the time has come for a book series dedicated to cardiovas cular morphogenesis that will serve not only as an important archival and didactic reference source for those who have recently come into the field but also as a guide to the evolution of a field that is clearly coming of age.
