Book excerpt: Excerpt from Silvical Characteristics of Red Alder Red alder glnus rubraiis the largest species of the genus and a leading hardwood throughout its range. It is the most important hardwood of the Pacific Northwest and coastal Alaska. Alnus (a genus of the birch family) is from the classical Latin name for the tree Occurring in groups or dense groves along water courses and sheltered coves, red alder is a typical tree of lowlands, river valleys, and moist mountain slopes along the Pacific slope (fig. Throughout its range, small groups of red alder break the monotony of deep coniferous forests (4) with their smooth, tapering boles often in clining outward toward the light, and their short dome-shaped crowns. Red alder is also known as Pacific Coast alder, Oregon alder, and western alder. Its range is confined to the Pacific Coast region from southeastern Alaska to western British Columbia, and south through western Washington and western Oregon to Santa Barbara in southern California (17) (fig. Red alder seldom occurs farther inland than 100 m_i - les or above 2, 500 feet elevation. Existing stands are estimated to contain 12. 5 billion board-feet, of which 90 percent is in Washington and Oregon. Principal uses of alder wood, listed in order of importance are: pulp and paper, furniture, fuel, and interior finish. Book excerpt: In March 23-25, 2005, an international symposium on red alder was held at the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture in Seattle, WA. The symposium was entitled S2Red alder: A State of KnowledgeS3 and brought together regional experts to critically examine the economic, ecological and social values of red alder. The primary goal of the symposium was to discuss new advances in the understanding of red alder biology and silviculture, changing market and nonmarket values, and the current regulatory climate for management of alder. This proceedings includes 14 papers based on oral presentations given at the symposium. These papers highlight some of the key findings from the history, ecology, biology, silviculture and economics sessions presented at the red alder symposium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ECOLOGICAL SILVICULTURAL SYSTEMS Unleash the natural power and adaptability of forests with this cutting-edge guide For generations, silvicultural systems have focused largely on models whose primary objective is the production of timber, leading to drastically simplified forests with reduced ecological richness, diversity, and complexity. Ecological silviculture, by contrast, focuses on producing and maintaining forests with “all their parts”—, that is, with the diversity and flexibility to respond and adapt to global changes. Ecological silviculture seeks to emulate natural development models and sustain healthy forests serving multiple values and goals. Ecological Silvicultural Systems provides a comprehensive introduction to these approaches and their benefits tailored to diverse types of forests, designed for forest management professionals. It provides a series of exemplary models for ecological silviculture and surveys the resulting forest ecosystems. The result is a text that meets the needs of professionals in forestry and natural resource management with an eye towards sustaining healthy forest ecosystems, adapting them to climate change, protecting them from invasive species, and responding to changing market forces. Ecological Silvicultural Systems readers will also find: Detailed treatment of forest ecosystems in North America, Europe, South America, and Australia A broad field of contributors with decades of combined expertise on multiple continents Discussion of pine woodlands; temperate hardwood forests, boreal forests, temperate rainforests, and more Ecological Silvicultural Systems is a useful reference for professional foresters, wildlife habitat managers, restoration ecologists, and undergraduate and graduate students in any of these fields.
